Even on level 7 of speed and defence or higher he catches up to me with the flame thrower and quite fast too. There must be something else going on because in all attempts he kills me right on the first encounter, even on these high levels.
Is your flame thrower over heating? When he starts getting too close, don't be afraid to go a little heavier on the flame thrower. Just make sure you ease up on it once you have made some distance.
Honestly, after I got used to it, I think I enjoy it more. Granted, I wish you could turn off perma death, but the game makes me use my head now. Can't just go running off my train willy nilly.

No, he is too fast and attempting to use rockets will result in him getting a ton of damage on your train. Fight him the same way that I demonstrate in this video. That is what worked for me.
To add to this, if you repeatedly tap W instead of holding when in the lake, Barry (the fish monster) cannot follow you. It saves a TON of time in the lake section unless you get unlucky and he first spawns right in front of you. Then you’ll have to wait 😅
So if ur like me i recommend upgrading speed to 7 get 5 damage get armor to 4 bring the train with u and go to theater do his quest and fight Charles it’s the only tip I can think of

That said, make sure for the quests that you have to run a decent ways for such as the journal or the lighthouse, make sure you have recently warded off Charles. This will prevent him from attack for a period of time making those quests safe.
I got all the way to the boss fight and tried to use the bug spray tactic but the teleporting meant that every time he teleported close to my train it took damage before he fell behind. I couldn’t deal enough damage and eventually even through healing my train twice I died. Any tips? I had done every mission except for slender man and the journal
Couple of questions. First of all, is your train maxed out? And second, were you only taking the damage when he teleported close to you? If you were taking damage when he charged up, then it means you need more speed (if applicable) and more optimization with bug spray. Make sure you anticipate the teleports. In most cases, the only times I was getting hit was when he teleported literally on top of me. If he was able to kill you just with that, then I am going to say it was just bad RNG. Best thing you can do is get more scrap for more repairs. Good luck!
@@enderspectre4607 Thanks for the advice! I think it was a mix of not having enough scrap saved up and bad rng. Almost all of my teleports were on top of me. I’ll probably try another run and try save up more scrap

I am getting very frustrated with this mode. I will try your tips and see what happens. I had actually made it halfway through the game on my own before I finally died. My biggest problem with this mode is that Charles always knows where I'm at. If he does leave, he never goes far. He just circles around. He also likes to camp out at each building making it nearly impossible to leave. And the whole time he's attacking my train. I can be there for at least 5 minutes before he finally leaves long enough for me to make a run for it. I have been trying different upgrades and levels, but I have learned to just not be on the train whatsoever when he's around. Doesn't matter how high my upgrades are or if I'm using bug spray or how many scraps I got, he just annihilates me. I'm currently planning on figuring out which paths keep me close to buildings. There are long stretches that are instant death for me. I might have to backtrack and go around the map 50 times if I can so I have places to hide. I do wonder though, can you hide under bridges? At least the smaller ones? I'm already ready to jump off a cliff to get away from him.
The goal should be to get to a point in which you can fight him off. I do go over how to get to that point and how to actually fight him off in the video. It does take a little bit of practice with bug spray, but its something you will have to get comfortable with in order to beat Charles in the final battle. Good luck! You got this!
@@enderspectre4607 I have since died at least 3 times since posting my comment. I'm having an issue with bug spray. I will get the train leveled up like you have it. In normal mode, I had no problem doing bursts with bug spray and not having it overheat. For some reason in nightmare mode, it overheats immediately when I use it. I do a few short bursts and it overheats. If I try to go slower, Charles immediately jumps up and annihilates me. It also doesn't seem to hold him back. He might back off for a few seconds, then he just charges. I have tried aiming at the ground too but he still charges. The developers weren't kidding when they said it's made to make you rage quit.
@@ellerj641 I show a fight at the end of the video. Are you sure you are doing short enough bursts? The only time I would overheat was when I would use a lot of bug spray due to him being really close, but I never had trouble getting it back down. It should basically be a simple click of the mouse.

It looks like you're doing a pattern of short three bursts, pause, then repeat. I am stubborn, so I will most likely be back on the game soon to try again. I managed to get halfway through at one point. I can do it again.

Im at the witch hut part and Charles is outside the hut he did not see me though so right now I’m safe but I just know the second I jump into the water he will see meh
If you can move fast enough, he shouldn't cause any issues till after the quest. That said, if your in the water and he is about to catch you, get caught by the fish instead. You have three lives when caught by the fish so you won't have to completely restart. I think you lose all your scrap though. Idk though. Good luck!
Does this sound alright so far, dump all scrap on speed till level 6, ignore the witch because Charles might come during the water monster section so don't risk it (yet), go open the chest with the tablet, go get bug spray (6 speed, 3 attack, 3 defense)
@@alexgreer6336 To be honest, it doesn't sound too bad. You have enough speed to be faster then Charles. That said, it seems like your weapon usage needs a little practice. I just don’t understand. I just played and got to Daryl’s… Charles literally showed up and left 4 fucking times. Back to back. He finally went away so I made it across to the lady who gives the first egg quest and he shows up again. Didn’t leave for 5 or 10 minutes at least. I finally just said screw it and played on my phone until he left for good. Went down and got the bug spray immediately afterwards and he showed up. I didn’t mention the part where my train kept taking damage through all of this, so when I left from the bug spray guy I got attacked again and couldn’t repair. Wtf. I’m about to give it another go now and try tapping the bug spray instead but ffs that last run was annoying.
His aggression is turned way up on Nightmare so it can be very tedious and annoying early game. It does make late game fun though. I do find it odd that he was attacking your train while you were not on it though. I know he will attack it if he runs into it, but I always found that insignificant.
@@enderspectre4607 it was so funny, i was playing nm mode and streaming for a friend in discord. charles attacked at the first egg quest and i stood under the roof with the gril and mocked him like "oh, you cant reach me? haha" and like he could hear me, he ran straight to my train and smashed it 100-0, then he came back for me xD
Then you need to be faster in your early game. There is a grace period in which he will not come and you have to be fast enough to get that quest done before he attacks for the first time.

@@fullipp 5v4 - 5v6 I consider to be the golden age. The games physics were the best during this time and (despite what one particular developer says) the physics were changed in the later builds. Maybe not directly, but you'll instantly notice the difference. You will be missing out on a lot of the new features including the newest map (which I actually do find better). You'll also be missing out on the titan AI (which in its current state isn't too much of a bad thing).

5 speed is usually the safe spot. You might get hit occasionally, but its not too bad.

Yup! I do recommend maxing out speed, and having an extra 30 scrap on hand, but the boss fight isn't much harder then a normal fight.

Unfortunately Charles is so fast that you can't get him far away enough to be able to use Boomer without taking damage.

There is a short grace period at the beginning of the quest where you can get the witch quest done. Valuable beginning scraps!
