Perhaps you should consider the origins and evolution of trade relations between "the West" and the nation of Japan. It needs to be pointed out that Japan was not a hostile enemy government, but rather a political/military ally. China regulation on products/companies is half political in nature and half driven by strategic goals. They let Toyota/Honda in years ago to absorb ICE technology but they no longer care because they are the ones driving the front on EV. There are several problems considering batteries: How to get affordable parts for repairs? How to insurance EV in the future? Where to park EV? EV:s are subsidied, but new batteries aren't. It would be more affordable to buy a new car than change batteries. Therefore used EV:s are worthless. The quality of Chinese batteries insulation is poor. Batteries will burn in crashes or even when you are charging them. Unlike petrol fire, battery fire is impossible to put off and will burn everything and even wounded people inside the car. Insurance costs will be very expensive and there will be restrictions where EV:s are even allowed to drive. Chinese EV:s are cheap, because making them poisons environment. Using western petrol cars would be better for environment than using Chinese batteries. This is the big white elephant everyone is pretending not to see.

The Japanese and Koreans build most of the cars they sell in the USA in the NAFTA countries (USA, Mexico, Canada). Same with a lot of European car companies. Its cheaper to build them here in the market they are sold in rather than ship them across an ocean.

those are two different things, but yes it's both called a subsidy. the thing how you got a discount is when a government (or another entity) wants to encourage something and offers the people money back when they do what is encouraged. the thing that is against trade rules and what china does is having companies sell their products on the international market for prices below the costs of making it, and then the chinese state pays those companies so those companies still make a profit. in the long term this isn't sustainable, but the idea behind it is to destroy competitors abroad and take over their market share, and once you have a monopoly you can raise the prices and you don't need those state subsidies anymore

I’m tired of living in a country but is selling expensive crossover cars, no longer making lower and cheaper sedans, creating an artificial shortage to increase price, and delivering a lower quality product. Some of these Chinese evs have better mileage and tech then a Tesla but instead we protect a brand which yes is American but also isn’t innovating, actively fights against Unions, and most it’s money comes from tax payers paid subsidies. Bring in cheaper cars that are better and increase competition. Yes China killed the steel industry and that was a shame but we keep protecting Tesla, Ford, GM who consistently produce less cars, higher prices, less reliability and lower quality.

Teslas are the safest cars in the world, according to crash tests in the US and Europe. They also have the best tech by far. Even the cars themselves are torn down by Chinese companies and meticulously copied. Every new innovation that Tesla does (no other company innovates much) is copied as quickly as possible by the Chinese. The only reason not to buy a Tesla is because you have some emotional, irrational feelings. Which won’t do you much good if you get into an accident and your kids die when they would have been safe in a Tesla.

The subsidy is limited to consumers who purchase new energy passenger cars (excluding second-hand cars) during 2024. Brazil pays a tariff on any import. A 300 phone costs 600 to final consumers. You would think local industry would take advantage by manufacturing it locally, but no. Tariffs are just bad to consumers, they protect nothing.

As the largest oil importer, China's determination to develop electric vehicles will not waver, even if the West insists on ICE vehicles forever. In fact, many countries in the world are short of oil. China manufacturers will sell EVs to those areas. EVs have accounted for 60% of the new vehicles sold in Nepal.
You win in the market by being better and offering more value to customers. Tariffs and sanctions just end up harming the average consumer while reducing local competitiveness. They tried to do that to Huawei a few years ago, and that's completely backfired.
I find it extremely funny how the video starts off by telling you that the Chinese are "changing the rules of trade" only to then tell us that they're following WTO policy when it comes to subsidies. I too find it hilarious that China now claims their compliance with the WTO rules. Until just two years ago they banned all foreign battery makers, subsidized EVs with batteries from local Chinese battery makers only. To ensure that no foreign battery competitors couldn't compete, they forced all EV OEMs to switch to local Chinese suppliers. As far as I can tell, these tariffs only have a negative impact on the consumer. It seems like a big barrier to lower income households going electric, EV's are still out of the price range for most middle class families. If the cars can pass the local safety laws and are affordable, I think you should just let capitalism take effect. European automakers will have to be more competitive and make an EV that people both want and can afford.
That's correct. In Canada, the most affordable electric vehicle costs around $50,000, while a basic internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle can be found for under $30,000.

Most European auto makers has their own factories in China and other parts of Asia, they can definitely match the prices of other Chinese brands if their products are up to par. The average shouldn't want tariffs. tariffs mean the importer has to pay double (with 100% tariff) and passes this cost along to the customer which will mean the customer ends up the loser. Tariffs are taxes for the consumer, not the supplier.

For those wondering, the argument for labor is wrong. The average Chinese person makes 16.5k usd per year as an auto factory worker. The average in the USA is ~34-40k. However the average cost of living is is much lower in china. The average single person in china is spending 560/m on rent near the plant vs 2000/m in the USA (Michigan because that's the state with the most plants(19%)). The biggest take away is China is much more structured and organized for mass production and since the govt. is involved there's less corruption (there's still some of course) and greed. Do a quick google search on the The CEO and executive staff salary in the USA compared to Chinas top 10 car manufacturers.

Tarrif for Chinese made solar panels started when China was still importing silicone and machinery to make the panels 15 years ago. Now, the Chinese has over 80% of the market share for solar panels and also has the complete supply chain, and the lead in solar technologies. The ev industry is further along than their solar industry when Tarrif started.

China regulation on products/companies is half political in nature and half driven by strategic goals. They let Toyota/Honda in years ago to absorb ICE technology but they no longer care because they are the ones driving the front on EV.
Anyone who has basic understanding of ICE vs EV knows it's drastically different. It's an obvious conclusion by looking at how Tesla is driving legacy makers out of business because legacy makers can't easily convert from ICE to EV. It's almost a totally different ball game. Amateur uneducated commenters are always acting like legacy makers can easily bridge the gap between ICE and EV. It's not that easy.
The reality is, Chinese government wanted their own industry to be competitive so they let Tesla in. Tesla basically bankrupted some of the EV startups in China and it was designed that way to weed out the weaker players. Now the ones that survived like BYD are making very competitive vehicles. Again, here is where amateur uneducated commenters keep flowing in and trying to bash the Chinese EV the same way they bashed Toyota in 70's and Hyundai in 90's. There are several problems considering batteries: How to get affordable parts for repairs? How to insurance EV in the future? Where to park EV?
EV:s are subsidied, but new batteries aren't. It would be more affordable to buy a new car than change batteries. Therefore used EV:s are worthless.
The quality of Chinese batteries insulation is poor. Batteries will burn in crashes or even when you are charging them. Unlike petrol fire, battery fire is impossible to put off and will burn everything and even wounded people inside the car. Insurance costs will be very expensive and there will be restrictions where EV:s are even allowed to drive.
Chinese EV:s are cheap, because making them poisons environment. Using western petrol cars would be better for environment than using Chinese batteries. This is the big white elephant everyone is pretending not to see.

EREV category not even exist in Europe. Poor chinese people are driving better cars than middle class in Europe. Example Volkswagen ID4 cost 18k EUR in China and is considered poor people car;)

The Japanese and Koreans build most of the cars they sell in the USA in the NAFTA countries (USA, Mexico, Canada). Same with a lot of European car companies. Its cheaper to build them here in the market they are sold in rather than ship them across an ocean.

the thing how you got a discount is when a government (or another entity) wants to encourage something and offers the people money back when they do what is encouraged.
the thing that is against trade rules and what china does is having companies sell their products on the international market for prices below the costs of making it, and then the chinese state pays those companies so those companies still make a profit. in the long term this isn't sustainable, but the idea behind it is to destroy competitors abroad and take over their market share, and once you have a monopoly you can raise the prices and you don't need those state subsidies anymore

They'll blame charges and labor cost but they can still sell cheaper than the actual price. Corporate greed is huge in the automotive world. So i'm happy that China is challenging their standardized cars (since most of european brands are part of huge conglomerate and are now all similar, while chinese cars are incredibly creative in term of design and visual identity). Some of these Chinese evs have better mileage and tech then a Tesla but instead we protect a brand which yes is American but also isn’t innovating, actively fights against Unions, and most it’s money comes from tax payers paid subsidies. Bring in cheaper cars that are better and increase competition. Yes China killed the steel industry and that was a shame but we keep protecting Tesla, Ford, GM who consistently produce less cars, higher prices, less reliability and lower quality.

BYD is also building a factory in Hungary - in Szeged, if I recall correctly. Should be up and running a couple of years. BYD's will be built directly in the European Union and I guess we'll see if the European legacy automakers can compete.

Teslas are the safest cars in the world, according to crash tests in the US and Europe. They also have the best tech by far. Even the cars themselves are torn down by Chinese companies and meticulously copied. Every new innovation that Tesla does (no other company innovates much) is copied as quickly as possible by the Chinese. The only reason not to buy a Tesla is because you have some emotional, irrational feelings. Which won’t do you much good if you get into an accident and your kids die when they would have been safe in a Tesla.

The answer to your question of where do all the money that China has poured into its auto/EV industry are coming from, the answer is taxes and corruption. No one can vote them away anyways, and the only route to career is to follow orders without own thinking so in one way it's efficient...
That means they can make long term plans too where no time is wasted on endless debating, whereas western decision-makers are much more shortsighted in their efforts to please the masses with populist policies etc.
I can guarantee that China is not the only country using subsidies to boost targeted industries. The Chinese just do it a lot better. Beyond that, even if everything were completely equal, China just has economies of scale and supply chain efficiencies that no country can match.

As far as I can tell, these tariffs only have a negative impact on the consumer. It seems like a big barrier to lower income households going electric, EV's are still out of the price range for most middle class families. If the cars can pass the local safety laws and are affordable, I think you should just let capitalism take effect. European automakers will have to be more competitive and make an EV that people both want and can afford.

The biggest advantage of Chinese EVs is technology, but Europeans just refuse to acknowledge this plain fact.
They're just making excuses because they're falling behind in tech. Most European auto makers has their own factories in China and other parts of Asia, they can definitely match the prices of other Chinese brands if their products are up to par. I would never buy a Tesla even with $7500 tax credit in US, it's just a poorly made car with the gear shifter on the screen.

China doesn't import vehicles -- accounts for less than 0.25% of all registered vehicle every year. All foreign automakers were required to build locally to prop local industry in China past 3-4 decades.

It more so worries the economy of local manufacturing. If less local cars are being bought those jobs will be lost and the economy will decline. Though I don’t necessarily disagree with subsidies, I think they are helpful

The average shouldn't want tariffs. tariffs mean the importer has to pay double (with 100% tariff) and passes this cost along to the customer which will mean the customer ends up the loser. Tariffs are taxes for the consumer, not the supplier.

For those wondering, the argument for labor is wrong. The average Chinese person makes 16.5k usd per year as an auto factory worker. The average in the USA is ~34-40k. However the average cost of living is is much lower in china. The average single person in china is spending 560/m on rent near the plant vs 2000/m in the USA (Michigan because that's the state with the most plants(19%)).
The biggest take away is China is much more structured and organized for mass production and since the govt. is involved there's less corruption (there's still some of course) and greed. Do a quick google search on the The CEO and executive staff salary in the USA compared to Chinas top 10 car manufacturers.

Tarrif for Chinese made solar panels started when China was still importing silicone and machinery to make the panels 15 years ago. Now, the Chinese has over 80% of the market share for solar panels and also has the complete supply chain, and the lead in solar technologies. The ev industry is further along than their solar industry when Tarrif started.
