For easier navigation, you can find the PGN with all the variations imported on www.patreon.com/hangingpawns
Just search for the English or the Caro-Kann Defensive System or type "opening" into the search bar and all that are available should be listed there.

The crows did not approve of 2.d4 to allow black to transpose into his favoured slav defence obviously.

I don't run into many players that play c6 simply to try to play something like a Caro Kan.
More often, I see people play c6 intending to blunt the scope of a fianchetto'd KB.
For more on this I highly recommend a Yasser Seirawan lecture at the St Louis Chess Club about 9 years ago (as of this posting) titled "The fianchetto and a blocked diagonal" on the St Louis Chess Club RUclips channel.
Yasser is one of the foremost proponents of the English opening of the last generation and played the English almost exclusively as a developing youngster through at least the first half of his decades long chess career and was recognized as one of the best American players of his generation. He is retired now but still actively is invited to host live international chess competitions broadcast on streaming and RUclips.
I had a most interesting opportunity to play Yasser when he was a developing kid "before he was really good" at the US Junior Open in San Diego in the 1970's and it was a curious game bettween 2 players who fancied themselves experts in the English. It was something like only my second rated tournament and I was rated only about 1550 against Yasser who was this elementary school kid rateed around a high expert and 2nd highest rating in the tournament.
I remember the game was a symmetrical English in which we both ripped off the first 15 or so moves in seconds, each mirroring the other exactly but Yasser was getting more suspicious about my preparation all the the time. Near the end of the line when symmetrical moves couldn't be played any longer, Yasser blinked first and immediately had a bad position that grew worse as I squeezed him to submission as a big crowd started gathering around what would be one of the great upsets of the year in US chess. But then my rating started to show its ugly head as move by move I made inferior moves and eventually a couple mistakes that lost the game.
    Ah, what could have been.
Yasser went on to have a brilliant chess career and I'm still a nobody.
And it's why Swiss tournaments are so great and why I can't understand why it's not the standard format for all Open competitions world wide. Win or lose, these opportunities to play players far out of league make for memories.

But in the position on 23.00 of the video, black doesn't castle as far i can see. So a wrong or slow move by them with their king in the centre will be fatal.

Hi! May I know how g4 pawn push works @15mins! (n a few secs) because Black has both knight n bishop attacking the pawn.. N white has it protected only once, right??
And I love Karo Cann.. ❤

    Try this one: 1.c4 e5 2.g3 c6...and now, what's best for White, I wonder? Or, in the g3 systems, 1.c4 c6 2. g3 e5!! Hmmm...how should White proceed now?

  • @benjamiheras9294

Hi, Stjepan. And, in the neo-catalan, what do you think about 4...Bf5 5.Qb3 (instead of 5.cxd5 and then 6.Qb3)?, this way black has to protect the pawn and does not get such quick development. This is Shankland's recommendation against the Bf5 lines.

I used to play this system against English. But then I realized that most of the English opening guys just don't know how to play against it and go into the exchange slav. Not a big deal, but it can be problematic if you want to play for a win with as black.

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 Год назад +1

I speculate that when people have great success against openings that tend to be more positional and less open tactics is because of the influence of computers. Something similar happened back in the 1970's when Bobby Fischer's open attacking style grabbed the attention and fancy of the chess world when "Everyone wanted to play like Fischer." Today, people learn on computers and computers are primary tools to learn playing styles, and computers are well known to favor tactical opportunities whenever they're present.
As you play higher rated players though, the reverse will often be more true.
As all players become more tactically proficient, then maneuvering becomes more important on both attack and defense.

The english is a great opening at all levels, from beginner-intermediate to grandmaster level, Carlsen played it in his WCC against Caruana, and so did Ding recently against Nepo. Btw, the french is also good, despite all the memes.

@@benjamiheras9294nglish opening for a beginner is not recommended. They need to have excellent opening principles and knowledge of many pawn structures. Also the English is a transpositional opening transposing to d4 and e4 openings many times so you have to know them as well. Overall it's a great weapon to have, but after a certain level.
