This Tudor Ranger is my dream watch. I'd take it any day over any watch. I do not go for hype or status nor will I ever sell it. I am going to buy it as soon as I am able. Already been saving for it for a while. Gonna be a blast wearing it everyday.
Also ignore all these negative comments and videos about the RANGER, they are brilliant WATCHES,I've been to gym, canoeing, climbing, swimming, fishing, done all sorts with the watch, and they look superb. Cracking time piece
The question I would ask is, why does every watch have to be a ‘substitute’ or ‘alternative’ to the Rolex equivalent? You hear it constantly, in virtually every review. The Ranger is a great watch in its own right, as are many dive watches that get pigeon holed as ‘Submariner alternatives’ and so on.
Probably because that's the hole Tudor has put themselves into - they are as closest to a Rolex model as you can get without actually paying Rolex prices/playing AD games. It's how Tudor has operated effectively since it's inception, being a literal sub-brand OF Rolex. The other reason of course is EVERYONE in the watch world knows all the basic Rolex models, so using it as a point of comparison is inevitable. Also, at the end of the day, if you CAN get/afford a Rolex Explorer, there is no real reason to get a Tudor Ranger, as it's pretty much deliberately made to be inferior as it's trying to capture a lower-priced market segment than Rolex. Same as the BB GMT vs the GMT Master II before it.
Tudor was literally created by Rolex to be exactly that, a substitute. As far as other brands, the majority of them copy Rolex and have copied Rolex for decades. Most of them are cheaper, and that’s why they are considered “substitutes.”
It’s a click bait thing. The Explorer has been a hype watch for a few years now and mentioning it in the title is a way for channels like this to generate traffic.
Great review. I bought mine when they were first released and I love it. I hate all the negativity around it, people say it's plain or boring. The whole idea of it is to be simple. If you want flashy busy dials, buy a Seiko Flightmaster FFS
Fantastic review again, love that you get out and about with the watch not just filmed at the table, your hard work is very much appreciated ,the best Ranger review and comparison on RUclips hands down👏🏼❤️
mine comes tomorrow! as a guy who's owned many rolex and tudor watches (as well as many other brands) i don't see this as an "entry level" watch. far from it. this is an actual tool watch, not conspicuous man-jewelry which i swore off of many years ago. i'm stoked!
The new Exp 1 wears too small. The aggressive taper really wrecked this new issue. Too dimunitive and disproportionate. Much prefer the older 36mm reference 114270. This new Ranger is spot on. Can't understand all the boring hate and sterile criticism. It shows how little many know of the vintage Ranger references. Great review.
This is the first video I’ve seen from your channel. I really liked your review and footage and will be checking out the rest of your content. Well done!
Enjoyed the review. This watch is really growing on me and considering picking one up. The only thing I would've liked is the Tudor shield on the dial to be red (to match the company/brand logo color).
It's nice. I keep imagining this watch with a sandwich dial. And I feel like a 38mm would suite me perfectly.... Slightly closer to the vintage size. If I we're designing it, I'd put the rose emblem and also polish the bezel. That would be hands down a perfect GADA watch for me. With a balance between sporty and dressy. Vintage and modern. I like this watch already. It could be pretty epic.
Agree, wouldnt change anything but just 1 thing, add another line below ranger, either “100m” or “cosc-certified”. Thats it. This watch served me well and is just what I needed, a versatile high quality yet low key for a travel watch.
Where I live the Ranger and the BB 36 are at the same price €2930. So it’s a no brainer for the Ranger for the same price, you get the superb bracelet with T-Fit and MT5402 COSC certified. No brainer indeed and I’m getting it 😊
I got a Tudor Ranger last year, when it was launched. The negative reviews around it had me back and forth on it... but after I tried it on for like the 4th time, I got it. It just suited me. Just finished taking it across Iceland, it was so easy to wear.
I'm loving this watch. It's so far from the 214270 MK2. The Ranger is so toolish and simple. The Explorer (39) is more like a Datejust than a field watch and wears a bit smaller. The lume doesn't really look aged to me like it does on the vintage cool Black Bays. It's a color choice that looks great next to the mat black. The dome of the sapphire and that dial make the numbers bend and reflect beautifully at all angles. And! I'm gaining half a second a day or less consistently for about 3 weeks now. My BB41 was almost that good as well. Amazing Tudor.
I feel the same way about my new Ranger. To me Tudor used the old Rolex Explorer 1016 as an example of what they were trying re-master. This Ranger and it's size just plain works!
The waitlist crap with Tudor now is a problem. I put my name down for the Ranger about a week or two after it was announced. Over the next 2 months of waiting, I ended up picking up another watch. Then I get a call from my AD (2+ months after putting down name). I ended up turning down the Ranger, as I had picked up another watch during that time AND the release of the Pelagos 39 happened. If they actually had these watches to sell on release, I would have picked up the Ranger, and possibly even the Pelagos 39. Since they have these stupid waiting lists now, they have sold neither to me, and I am starting to question adding anymore Tudors to my collection. I love the brand, but I dislike this Rolex sales model.
Rolex makes a million watches a year, and my AD says no other company delivers more watches for sale. The waiting list, or wish list as my dealer calls it, is not stupid, but necessary. I got my Ranger in November, after putting my name on the list in July. There are just many more clients than available watches. Rolex plans a new production site in Switzerland. They know the problem, and are ready to do something about it.
Great review...I was window shopping the other day with no intention on buying a watch, but wanted to see two watches in person, the Omega Railmaster and the Tudor Ranger...the Railmaster was underwhelming on my wrist...not to say it's not a beautiful watch, but was too dressy...then I saw the Ranger, they had only one in stock and I made the mistake of trying it on and it has not left my wrist since...I have a Rolex already that is my dress watch and have been considering a more tool/field type watch and the Ranger scratched that itch, which it does very well...
I think the complaint to printed indices is strange. That’s the look of that watch. That’s how traditional tool and field watches were made. It would look strange with applied markers. I plan to get an Explorer one day, but not at all to be replacement, a more flashy but not overstated watch for going out and dressed up. In my opinion the Ranger and explorer in 39mm are my ‘perfect’ watches. I will probably end up with only those two.
awesome video! Thank you for sharing all this detail. sorry to ask an awkward question but do you mind sharing your wrist size just for reference? watches look great on you and hoping to get a sense of how they'd look on my wrist. Thank you!
I was so excited for the Ranger but I can’t bring myself to pay more than $200 for a printed dial. I have sub $300 watches with gorgeous dials and applied indices. If they had gone the BB36 dial rout I’d be on that bandwagon.
Thank you WYS, but the bottom line is ; it's all down to wrist size. I have had countless watches since 1963 and the comfort was always down to the overall size of the watch in relation to my six and half inch wrist. I am now awaiting the BB 54 😉.

Thanks for the comparison to the 39mm Explorer, and the 36mm Explorer. I feel the 39mm Explorer was the perfect size for me (7-1/4" wrist), but I don't like it enough to pay the $9K they are selling for, even though that's a drop from where they were at after discontinuation. I feel like I might as well get on the wait list for an Explorer II at that price. I've tried the 36mm Explorer (exhibition example) on at the AD, and felt it was a bit too small. I tend to like 38 and up. My ONE issue is the lume/print color you mentioned. That unfortunately kills it for me, though I've not gotten to see one in person (none at the AD when I was in). Green-ish lume just isn't really for me. I think part of it is I know they can do a great creamy lume like on the BB Pro or the BB58 black. I would even like white lume (love the look of the Sinn 556). I would be curious to see how the 3D lume of the BB Pro looked on the Ranger, assuming they could make it into number shapes (I don't see any reason why not). While the printing is more historic, I think a few modern touches would be nice. If somebody is okay with the lume color, I see zero reason not to get the new Ranger though. It's really nice otherwise.
I too thought the lume was a little off-putting when I saw all the reviews about this watch. That was the only thing holding me back. But when I saw this Ranger at an AD all that negativity dissipated. This so called greenish looking color shows much more under studio lighting photos and well lite videos. In person it's much more subtle (more like an off-white). I'm so glad Tudor didn't go the way of a full-blown light brown (patina) color. Anyway I bought the Ranger and am now very happy I did. I'm wearing the living crap out of this watch.
I own the 39mm Explorer and it’s an awesome piece. But if I was going to downgrade, I’d go with a Sinn 556 all day long over this Tudor, for half the price.

Unfortunately Tudor wasn't brave enough to offer it in 37 or 38 mm, which would be much cooler...at least for me. Always felt my 214270 was to big for its own good. Still put my name on the waitlist for the Ranger.
This is a watch you can't look at in pictures. You HAVE to go to a chop and get it on our wrist. Once you see it in person, you'll know what I'm talking about. Absolute dream of a watch.
I own both and they’re hugely different watches. The Rolex is shiny and much dressier while the Tudor is a no nonsense, rugged tool watch. I wouldn’t wear the former while hiking or on travelling, especially in certain countries, while the Tudor is perfect for it, even because it doesn’t draw unwanted attention.
Why do folks call the MT56 and MT54 movements "in-house"?? They are made by Kenissi which is a joint venture between Tudor(Rolex), Chanel, and Breitling. How does Tudor get to call these basically 3rd party movements "in-house"? By that measure any ETA movement used in a Swatch brand watch is also "in-house"...ETA is, after all, wholly owned by the Swatch group as are Longine, Rado, Hamilton, Tissot, etc... that would seem to be more "in-house" than Kenissi which is only partly owned by Tudor and runs as an independent company... and yet people seem not to say that.
Tudor developed them, and did that before the existence of kenissi. At least the 56xx’s. Tudor owns the majority stake in kenissi, and prior to kenissi, the movements in the early pelagos and north flag models were manufactured by Tudor, presumably with the help of Rolex, who also assisted with the architectural development of the MT56 line. Kenissi’s manufacturing facility is literally connected to the Tudor facility in Geneve. Kenissi as a company exists as a way for Rolex/tudor to sell their movements to third parties, through agreements which act like a way to buy into the exclusivity of these “in-house” movements. Breitling developed the chronograph movement and in return got the MT56’s to use in their watches. the other brands simply bought in for rights to use these movements. Why do folks cry over stuff like this? In-house, outhouse, who cares, they’re fantastic movements.
@@mikeymezer …yes, they are good movements mostly….but ETA was the Swiss watch movement industry for decades and still would be if Swatch hadn’t decided to stop selling to third parties. In fact, there wouldn’t have been a Tudor without ETA.
@@silvestrocrino3256 you are correct as far as I know. When Swatch told Tudor they were cutting them off, they didn’t want to rely on anyone and had the money to make moves. Had Swatch not done that, Kenissi wouldn’t exist for sure. I think most watch collectors today understand what in-house means…it means there’s not a 2824 or equivalent under the hood if we are talking Swiss watches. And these days, the new 2824’s have been slowed down and some upgraded with Si hairsprings and are branded as in-house Powermatic 80’s; only available to Swatch brands. Are they wrong to call them in-house? They definitely need to change the term…irks me like the term Natural Wine… I just think people love to dog pile on these movements because of group mentality. I have an MT5652, had the date issue but after it was fixed the watch ran crazy good…my current daily is a Ranger with the MT5402 and it’s currently running at +0.1s a day average but I keep the watch on its crown at night and legit keep it running closer to 0.0 than any watch I’ve ever owned. It was last set 6/10/24 and today, 9/16/24, I’m running at just under one full second past atomic time. I ride 150+ miles a week on my road bike with this watch on too.
This Tudor Ranger is my dream watch. I'd take it any day over any watch. I do not go for hype or status nor will I ever sell it. I am going to buy it as soon as I am able. Already been saving for it for a while. Gonna be a blast wearing it everyday.

And these days, the new 2824’s have been slowed down and some upgraded with Si hairsprings and are branded as in-house Powermatic 80’s; only available to Swatch brands. Are they wrong to call them in-house? They definitely need to change the term…irks me like the term Natural Wine…
I just think people love to dog pile on these movements because of group mentality.
The Tudor for the working man with sense. The Rolex for the posing man with more money than sense.
