I read interpreter of maladies a month or so ago and also LOVED it, and was similarly blown away by that first story. as a fan of indian diasporic literature I have read all of her books (except the one she wrote in italian) - I would 100% recommend the namesake, it’s up there as one of my favorite books of all time. her other novels I didn’t like as much but would def recommend the namesake it’s stunning
I love this video! You sound great. Finally, someone else reads Pulitzer Prize winning or nominated books. Nice to know somebody does! This is the order for Elizabeth Strout: Olive Kitteridge, Olive Again, My Name Is Lucy Barton, Anything Is Possible, Oh, William!, Lucy By The Sea. Five in total. The Burgess Boys is good too and the other stand alones are good too. Can't go wrong with any of her books in my opinion. Never change the way you are. You make me smile. Thanks for all the honest opinions!
Interpreter of Maladies is my go-to rec for a strong short story collection. loved the way Lahiri interlaces the same themes throughout each story, making the collection quite cohesive while still having the stories be different from each other. let the good people know, what are some other short story collections you stan!!! also need to get on your level and read more pulitzer books. will read one for every eyeroll in this vid!
You managed to read and review three books that I have also read and enjoyed. I read all three with a local book group to which I belong. We also tend to read award-winning books and books by award-winning authors. My reaction to each of these books was pretty much the same as yours, although I liked Gilead a bit more than you did mainly for Robinson's beautiful writing style. I've read two of the subsequent books in her Gilead series, Home and Lila, neither of which Iliked as much. But I would highly recommend her first novel, Housekeeping, as an eccentric story well-written as the others, but with a very different vibe. Olive Kittredge blew me away and I'd recommend Strout's My Name is Lucy Barton and The Burgess Boys.
Robinson's writing is beautiful!! I just couldn't get into Gilead, but I would definitely pick up more from her. I'll check out housekeeping and the strout books ! thank you 😛
this video made me realize you have his way of speaking where u start every sentence loudly and as it carries on your voice fades with it and becomes more hearable
I feel like i could watch you read a book and be so entertained. Id place bets on how many eye rolls you’d make for specific books. Elizabeth Strout is a god and idky it’s so hard to describe her writing but i call her an anglosaxon elena ferrante. I love her. The four book series that oh william is a part of is the lucy barton series, which i read and loved last yr, and i need to binge on the two book series of olive kitteridge this yr. So glad you’re becoming a fan of her work. Hm do i vaguely recall you saying you’ve read the overstory-richard powers? That’d be my pulitzer prize rec - and what a badass way to describe your reading taste to ppl 😎 The english patient-michael ondaatje is another great rec.
Thank you 🥺--I haven't read the overstory yet! I went to a talk he gave a couple months ago and he is pretty cool. An anglosacon elena ferrante is a brilliant comparison 👀 I can't wait to read more ferrante and strout
I definitely recommend going back to Gilead❤️it truly is worthwhile once you’re in a place for a slower pace & somewhat meandering story. Robinson’s writing throughout all of her work (particularly in Housekeeping) is lovely❤️highly recommend returning at another point.

Hated Gilead. I find the more elite the recommendations the more likely it is that I'll find it boring/a waste of time. Read Olive Kittredge several years ago. Probably need to read it again, but I remember thinking it was slow, but not disliking it. Definitely looking into the short stories.
fair fair fair. I agree in some sense about the "elite" recommendations--I don't go for a book that sounds self-indulgent and purposefully "intellectual"
"pulitzer books" are 100% the books I find and pick up on the street and then absolutely never read. (Gilead is v much that bitch.) that said, I have been meaning to read Interpreter of Maladies for approximately 100 years so maybe? also, re Lahiri and Italy, if you're solipsistic dweeb like I am, I recommend her books on writing, language and translation.

Or am I just sexy af? ;) Loved your video and your thoughts. Going to read Interpreter of Maladies and Olive Kitteridge as soon as I can. Sadly I haven't read a great short story collection, hope those two will change this. Love you, you sexy human 😘😏
What do you look at when you are talking to US? Always wondered. Olive Kittridge was sooooo Depressing. Ugh….each story/chapter is a piece of her life kind of in order with a sort of mystery.
I have a lot of thoughts about Jhumpa Lahiri but I'll restrain myself here. Expect a long (ranty?) email lol. (I hear absolutely no difference in audio tbh).
You probably already know, but The Candy House by Jennifer Egan is ~kinda a sequel to a Visit From the Goon Squad and it is very good. If you do read it I think it’s chapter 3 that is so insufferable and cringey (I think on purpose) that you just have to get through lol
so the new mic is nice, but it requires a different type of editing that you're using. The levels are all over the place, it sounds like you have a directional mic or something. You could switch back to the old one.
i know 💀💀 don't tell anyone, but this vid was supposed to come out the day before. I went to edit and heard the levels were fairly fucked, and then I spent hours figuring out how to fix the mic for next time instead of editing. And then I tried to edit each audio clip to smooth the levels and my laptop would overheat from the effort 😭 I almost scrapped this vid 💀
The Road was the only McCarthy book I ever read. You’re right, it was pathetic. It pains me to even think about reading another of his. Why. Is this man worshipped.

So that's why you call your fans sexy? After reading this book? Or am I just sexy af? ;)
Loved your video and your thoughts. Going to read Interpreter of Maladies and Olive Kitteridge as soon as I can. Sadly I haven't read a great short story collection, hope those two will change this. Love you, you sexy human 😘😏
Lmaoo thank you ;) tell me what you think of interpreter and olive 👀👀🫰
Did you read Paul Harding’s, “Tinkers?” Try it.
I got this at a thrift store 2 days ago....👀 I'm looking forward to it
NOT THE LENNIE SPOILER
🤐🤐 HAHA
What do you look at when you are talking to US?
Always wondered. Olive Kittridge was sooooo Depressing. Ugh….each story/chapter is a piece of her life kind of in order with a sort of mystery.
I usually just look at the camera lens lol ---Olive K really is damn depressing but in such a well done, sexy way
I have a lot of thoughts about Jhumpa Lahiri but I'll restrain myself here. Expect a long (ranty?) email lol.
(I hear absolutely no difference in audio tbh).
lol she is fun!! hahaha
you should read flannery o'connor's short stories, i feel like you'd fall in love with her
i will add her to my list 👀
Another Booktube parasocial relationship to add to my collection (‘:
Let's be best friends forever. You buy the matching necklaces 😏
You probably already know, but The Candy House by Jennifer Egan is ~kinda a sequel to a Visit From the Goon Squad and it is very good. If you do read it I think it’s chapter 3 that is so insufferable and cringey (I think on purpose) that you just have to get through lol
I neeed to get on the Candy House asap! I'm really looking forward to it (and I have it 👀)
Big mic = famous (just the way it is)
HAHA I mean.. 😤😤
so the new mic is nice, but it requires a different type of editing that you're using.
Charles= cute and hilarious
🫣🫣
Is he really 15?
in a way
@@cs0p oh, same.
So… you like having a big mike, eh? Eh?
Your microphone is sooo BIG grrrrl!
You’re so Californian
The Road was the only McCarthy book I ever read. You’re right, it was pathetic. It pains me to even think about reading another of his. Why. Is this man worshipped.
i really dont get it... good to hear from another cormac truther...
You're not properly seated. Through the door 🚪 behind you , we can literally see the dead entering and exiting.. very bad juju..
HAHAHA I actually got chills
You need to take a deep breath and calm down. I like your videos, Im a 79 yr old gramma. You have a lot of interesting things to say about books that I really enjoy. Maybe its just an age thing Im not sure. Anyway, take it more seriously because your are very good.
thanks ;)
YES! I hate Cormack McCarthy as an author, I would love a video of you rubbishing him 😂
Ps, no hate towards C.M. as a person, I don't know him, I just don't like his books.
amen hahaha there's a portion of one of my videos where I talk about why I don't like him 👀
.....
are you on tiktok/ig?
no just the sexy youtube ;)
