- Splash pages - usually the first page of a comic, splash pages feature the title, credits, and a big, attention-grabbing image! When we dug into our long boxes, we found a few comic books that featured nothing but splash pages!

I think you guys maybe didn’t give Nextwave a fair shot. Ed was curious as to why the logo was on each page but if you get a chance to read the book and understand the humor and wildly different approach it was taking, you would see how all that stuff works. It was one of the funniest and most entertaining comics ive ever read. Its more than what it seems on the surface level.

Did Ed dismiss Nextwave or just that splash page sequence? I haven't read Nextwave but I have friends who dug it. I like Immonen's Machine Man drawings a lot. It's a series I've been buying when I find it in 50 cent boxes. So one day I will sit down with it. It's one of those 00s series that I remember people online talked about a bit along with things like Ultimates, Planetary, Authority...I think it's gimmick was humor, breaking the 4th wall, self-awareness, and misfit characters. Is that right? Ellis had (has) a passionate, vocal following. Seems so long ago. - Jim
Cartoonist Kayfabe its a fun read and it was really different. Be interested in hearing what you think about it when you get to it. Also as far as warren ellis, his book Planetary is, for me, the single best modern comic series ive had the opportunity to read as it was released. Very underrated and kinda forgotten about but it was epic.
I love Stuart Immonen's work. Those Next Wave series were great.

If I remember correctly, every issue of the Death of Superman story used 1 less panel per page until they got to the last issue that was all splash pages. The issue before it was 2 panels per page, the issue before that 3 panels per page, and so on.
I think that's correct. I definitely read that somewhere but I don't have anything near by to verify it. But we have the same memory of that detail. - Jim
The comic that first came to my mind was Silver Surfer: Judgement Day by John Buscema with colors by Christie Scheele. Other than one page I think, it's all splash pages. That was one of the graphics novels so it was already printed a bit big.
Yes. That is true. It's an interesting book! It came up in the preparation. I didn't get hold of one in time for this video. But I have since and yes - all splashes, nice color, the graphic novel format is fun. It's a book worth looking through if you have the chance. - Jim
Promethea #12 by Alan Moore and JH Williams III is another one that comes to mind.
Love the Warren Ellis run on Stormwatch, maybe even more than Authority though I enjoy both
Shit, I didn't even know there was such a thing as comics made up entirely of splash pages! This was amazing to roll through. I'd love to see you guys dig up some examples of comics that play with the panels & gutters in order to change the pace of the storytelling (I'd argue that these are a good example of that, in a way).
...very fascinating how you guys (& lot of comic book fans & collectors) discovered many comic book industry terms from the How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way book!!! Since it came out in 1978 and I had been a die hard collector by then for over 10 years (I'm an old fart!) it made me wonder how I learned about such words like "indicia"!?!! It probably was through the older comic book collectors I had to compete with buying up comics at the neighborhood drug stores or maybe from an early Overstreet Price Guide!?!! What was interesting back in those pre-comic book store days is coming across an old coverless comic book that had no indica to pin point what exactly you had due to it was on the bottom of its inside cover!!!
Great idea for a video; those Larsen pages are incredible. I think Ed's mostly right about the Swamp Thing issue, except Totleben may have had more of the initiative. The comic was doing a series of the Swamp Thing working his way back to earth through several planets and I remember reading that it was freeform enough for Totleben to present to Moore a fait accompli (I'm sure he told Moore what he was up to). Moore was on fire creatively at the time and I'm sure he approached it in the spirit of one of his spoken word/seance/music performances.
The Eyes of the Cat was originally published in the late 70's on yellow paper, digest size, as a premium for Metal Hurlant subscribers. It was shortly after the collapse of the Jodorowsky Dune project that Moebius (and Giger and other weirdos) were involved in. It may have been one of Jodo's first comics, and eventually led to the Incal.
The first one was the Hulk one. It was what inspired Thor 380.

That page with Hulk blowing smoke out of this nose looks like a Nate McDonough drawing!
Along these lines is a Swamp Thing issue (around 120, 1993ish) where the story is one panel. Each page is three horizontal strips which flow one into the next. So technically you could take your scissors and lay each strip together in one really long single panel. And most it's a peyote trip (of course).
Oh man. No love for NextWave. That series is an all-timer.

I saw some of the original art to SD 199, and I think they were 4-up. MONSTER pages. Looked gorgeous.

Rick Veitch has been doing the "one panel per page" method recently which he calls "panel vision". Functions like a comic, but feels very different and also doesn't exactly feel like "splashes" as well due to the shape of the books
This reminds me now of Lynd Ward's and Laurence Hyde's "Woodcut Novels," which use one image at a time (and wordless too!) to tell their stories.
Agree. I keep thinking that once you start talking full-page/splash-page, most picture books fit the description. I know we like to include those woodcut novels in the comics cannon, but are they picture books? Is there a definition that makes this clear? I don't think there is, but it's one of those concepts that helps broaden comics into connected realms like picture books. And if it's not clear, I like picture books! Definitely an influence on my visual thinking. - Jim
