To me it looks like they wanted to make it 100 pounds so bad (for the 100th year of the telephone booth) so they had to include some extra stuff haha

Personally, as someone from the UK who grew up seeing these all over, I think the fence, lamp post and street sign make it look very proper for London. So I think it adds a lot to it as an overall scene. Will be nice having that with the London Routemaster bus. I hope one day we get a black London Taxi cab in the Creator (Icons) car line. Would definitely be interested to see you build and review it, Jang, for what it's worth.

Using it as a phone stand is the most random selling point ever lol
Edit: I get that the idea was to have the juxtaposition of a modern smartphone next to an old timey telephone booth but it just looks so impractical with that street lamp in the way

I actually like the inclusion of the little section of sidewalk, fence, lamppost etc. Just the phone box by itself would be way too plain. This is like a mini diorama and really sets the scene.
I of course would love to see you review it, as I like your details oriented and good standards for things, your reviews really are like no others.

I think the extra scenery is to push the 'London' selling point to worldwide buyers. The fact is that back before mobile phones, these phone boxes were in every single city, town and village in the UK. They were absolutely not just a 'London' thing, and indeed today I think you'd be very, very hard pressed to actually find one in London. The styling of the iron fence and streetlamp are very much more London-like though, and the format of the road sign is exclusively found in London. Their inclusion therefore makes this a London thing, rather than just a UK thing. Not sure yet if that's a good or a bad move!

Totally agree. These things where everywhere before BT replaced them. At one time or another my home town had both old and new style boxes. Now theyre all gone.

I really doubt that's the reasoning, correct me if I'm wrong but what lamp post and wrought iron fences aren't present in any other city in the UK? I'm not sure that's true...The only signifier really is the street sign which is a small part of the set...and for people who aren't aware that red phonebooths are present in other parts of the country, the street scene would definitely not be any more of a signifier lol.
I think Lego just wanted to make it into a more "complete" set by setting up a street scene and to make it more interesting

There's still plenty in London, especially in the touristy areas like Westminster, where people love to take photos posing outside them. They're only kept for heritage reasons though, I doubt many of them are still in use at all!

I gather this particular model, the K2 was mostly installed in London. It was the later K6 model that was more widely installed throughout the U.K. so, from what I’ve read this is why it’s being touted as a London Telephone Kiosk.
There are surprising a large number of these kiosks in central London. BT tend to keep them in areas of historical interest. The rest of us have to make do with the stainless steel urinals!
The road sign doesn’t have a London postcode, SC isn’t a code used anywhere!
I quite like it, but not for £100…

When I was in London those phone booths were plastered on the insides with adds…adds that we can’t talk about. So there should be some printed 1x2 plates to make it more realistic.

I'm from the UK. Many phone boxes are no longer in use, at least outside of London and possibly other big cities. A lot of these old phone boxes have been converted into mini libraries - bring a book, take a book sort of thing. If they had included that as an alternative option to the two types of phone, it would have made it a little more appealing.

I am an American who love the red phone booth. I was one of those tourist taking selfies while visiting London. I like that they added a diorama scene. Infact, it looks similar to the street where I took my pictures. I think the phone booth by itself would look a little plain. I would not use it as a phone stand. It think it would make a great display

London resident here. I think this set will obviously resonate more with people who have an emotional connection to the phone box whatever that might be. Anyone over the age of 45 (?) will remember making a call from one of these iconic booths, probably to their first secret teenage crush or maybe to their dad to ask him to come and pick them up from the mountain pass where they are cold, soaking wet and stranded midway through their first (badly planned) hike. Valuing any Lego set based on piece count is a useful shorthand and makes practical sense in determining cost but it can’t ever quantify worth beyond that narrow scope. Talking of value, I’m old enough to remember when you could make phone calls from those red boxes for as little as 2pence! Love your channel - thank you for all.

  • @WelcometoEuphoria
    @WelcometoEuphoria Год назад +4

The original Ideas submission had an iconic red post box alongside the telephone box, which made sense as they are often seen together and not just in London, as most villages had this or still have this too (my village still has both). So I can't work out why they've replaced the post box with some city railings. And the scale might be to suit the window frame elements being used, but doesn't go with anything else. I wonder whether a smaller set at half the price would have been better targeted.

Personally I was baffled when this idea was approved but gave Lego the benefit of the doubt. I’m yet more baffled seeing the final product. The additional scenery doesn’t add much value to the set, using that budget towards printed pieces rather than stickers on a premium priced adult display piece would have been appropriate. Not entirely sure who is going to use a phone holder that awkwardly blocks the display and input of your phone.

  • @nathonso_edits

    • @GodmanchesterGoblin
      @GodmanchesterGoblin Год назад

Yes, it's pretty accurate for a K2 phone box, which is what Lego describe it as, but there really should be six rows of windows, not five. A Lego compromise, I assume. Most phone boxes around the UK are the later K6, which is slightly smaller and has a more complex design of the window panes. It is a nice set though.

Interesting fact, when British telecom decommissioned these there was a public outcry, so they preserved 5000 around Britain. They are listed structures and are often used for lending libraries or defibrillator stations. You could even buy them for £500. To keep for yourself.

Love the idea of a red telephone box, those things are iconic even for me who's from the other side of the channel but that price point is crazy. The street add-on has its charms and I really like that "double as a mobile phone stand" bonus (though the street lamp gets in the way) but a striped down to the essential at 50-60ish would have been quite enough. Not for me unless a very significant discount.

You won't find many in London (or anywhere in the UK) these days, particularly after many were converted to ugly corporate-style BT telephone boxes in the 90s. Interestingly many of the old style boxes have been converted to other uses. According to wikipedia, a few have been turned into defibrillator stations, community kiosks, flower displays and small libraries, while another is apparently an aquarium? Those might make for some interesting alternate builds.

I'm much more in favour with the added street setting, brings more colour and life to all the red. As others have pointed out, they're not just a London thing, the red boxes are a British thing. I live in a town about an hour outside London, and you can still find them (few of them have any working phones though). The one thing that gives this set a very London feel is probably the street sign design: "Buildmore Road".

I'm not from the UK myself nd have only visited London once. I think the telephone box having a bit of scenery is ctually really nice. I think the scenery looks good and it makes the set a bit more interesting. If you can easily seperate the telephone box from the scenery, then that would be great. I think that would allow it to be the monolith and give people the choice of what they'd want to display.

  • @nickvang7

I feel like the extra scenery is necessary. On its own the phone booth could look like a brick or a book from a distance and be ignored. The scenery makes it much more inviting to walk closer and also more easily see that it's actually a phone booth. Especially when some customers might be a bit older with poorer eyesight!
And when you put a figure inside it like a Barbie doll or something the extra scenery will go great with that.
This is not just an object, it's more like a 3D painting or a postcard that you can display in your room.
Also I don't need to see a review of this, instead please review more Friends and Monkie Kid!

Having the phone-holding feature is a neat idea but it looks like that lamp is going to get knocked off all of the time from someone grabbing it. Or the fence will get knocked down when people put down their phone after another car warranty call.

I like the add on, looks good, but I agree that it would not only be cheaper but also more imposing to have it has a stand alone. Maybe you can remove the kiosk from his base? As some people already pointed out, it's to make it more of London icon. After all this things are seen everywhere, some were even imported to Portugal (where I'm from) in the 20th century! Btw, wouldn't it be cool if Lego made a cheaper minifig version like with the Land Rover?

The issue isn’t the “extra stuff” itself but how it distracts from the majesty of the box. The pole in the foreground and then all the colorful flowers (and the gold atop the wrought iron) taking away from the iconic red. They should have put the lamp in the background and a bench and trash (sorry, rubbish) bin or something. Hedging with foliage takes away from the city-ness of it.

The original submission also had a red postbox [mailbox] that added even more interest, IMO, to the scene. I mean, the phone booth screams UK already, but the unusual [to us in the US] looking mailbox next to it just hammered it home, though apparently they are often close to the phone booth. The original submission had 2000 pieces and looked pretty good. It didn't have the smartphone holder [which in concept is cute, but putting it behind the scene makes it impractical to actually quickly pull the phone out to answer it!], and it lacked the different eras of phones inside, I believe. The original was, however, far too large, IMO. I figured they would scale it down [but not for minifigs], and maybe it could hit the $60-70 price point. As this set goes, I wish it was closer to that price. I like the design, and the extra stuff is well thought out, but this is probably going to be a 'wait for it to be on big discount' for me.

We just need it in blue, and find some way to make a much larger interior with a Timelord.

Looks great for a shelf display and not too large for some of the UK styled Creator cars like the London bus or Fiat 500. The piece of scenery really completes the look of it rather than having a lone telephone box positioned randomly on a shelf. Just my subjective opinion. Not an immediate buy but a fun consideration for the future.

Im not from the U.K but I personally think the scenery is a nice addtion, as it helps to create the setting for the phone box. This set doesn't interest me, but to those that it does, im sure it'll be a welcomed touch which completes the look.

Something tells me Lego will release London taxi cab in this scale, specifically to display both sets together.

As you said, street cutaway unnecassary, and i wouldnt want to spend money parts I dont want. Telephone box and alternate interior would be enough selling point and set would be cheaper
