Right? I get why people are mad about the emgs but that guitar screams. Broken headstock and all. And you couldn't make that story up. It's wild. I had a great time in guitar retail when I was a mere lad
@Shiznitt they do and this one certainly perpetuates that adage. I have another prs McCarty soapbar that slays that had the head sheered right off. The irony is that my first gibson which is a nighthawk also head the head snapped by the same dude that broke this one. Crazy story again
I still have my first "les paul" too. I used quotes there because I built it with my grandfather from a bunch of parts, some basswood, and some maple that was thrown out of a bat factory. Not factoring in the time, it has to be less than $250 in materials, but it's still the best guitar I own.
A 1972 custom was the only year I believe that had Gibson embroidered on the pick up covers. Would’ve been a great trade on your part. However, the guitar you have is beautiful, and your story telling is even better!
It def would have been. If this weren't my forever guitar and my number 1 of over 20 les Paul's and over 100 I've owned, I'd probably toss and turn about it. Great story, Benny. The tone on that guitar is amazing. Most stock Les Pauls have a high mid-range output. But that one clearly covers the whole frequency spectrum. The lows are punchy and solid. The highs are crisp and clear without being abrasive. The mid-range is there without being tinny. Switching from the neck to the bridge was a sonic delight. Really crisp and clean at the bridge. I was really impressed with the lows at the neck. They punched right through the mud that most Les Pauls tend to carry. Nice score!
Those EMGs actually look good with that finish. I had EMGs in my 96 wine red Studio (my 1st Les Paul) from 97 until last year when I put newer 490R & 498T & hand wiring back in it.
The emgs don't always reign supreme. But they can be a magic combo when a les paul sounded dead. I don't even remember what it sounded like but I was playing prog metal in a signed band so the pickups didn't have the squealies I needed. I suspect if I went back to the originals, which I still have, I'd probably be psyched. But this guitar rules more because it's an actual magic guitar. It destroys all. The best guitar acquisitions are the ones with a story. My first true electric guitar (that I still have because it’s my only guitar at the moment) is my squier strat with a mother of Pearl pickguard. Basically after coming back from a trip from California where I tried my uncle’s 2001 fender starcaster strat, I tried to restring the shitty acoustic I had only for the nut to come off, and at that point I was like “fuck this I’m getting an electric”. So a period of four months passed and I still didn’t have a lot of money to get a new guitar. Until the day after my 21st birthday where I went to a casino with my parents, got blasted drunk, and won around 200 bucks. After that, I spent a week making sure I had enough to buy both a guitar and amp, as I already had a chord, strap, and gig bag. Went to the guitar store, and i managed to get a 100 dollar squire strat, black finish with the MOP pickguard. It was perfect… …until I found out weeks later that the high frets didn’t work. So now we’re trying to see if we can get the neck repaired.
It's always a learning experience. You know better for next time and take it in stride. I just broke the pickup selector on a 4k les paul because I was messing with it trying to see how it works because I'm a moron. It happens! New subscriber here. I'm not sure what it is ,but you can tell by just looking at that guitar it's a player for sure. How much does that thing weigh? I know Les Paul's can be on the heavier side, but you sling that thing around like it's a 6lbs guitar. Nice story to go with a great guitar I'm sure!
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist Thanks for the welcome! I'm a Fender guy.... Teles to be specific. However I love the sound LPs have and they do look beautiful. I noticed a good portion of them are 8lbs+. So it seems like yours is a great weight! I don't know what I'd like on the Gibson side. Medium/chunky necks with vintage tall frets are my thing. Those pups sound great btw!
@Lightning God I find going back and forth between teles and strats and les Paul's and prs' is like playing a different instrument. Do u want to be in the Jeff beck universe or the Jimmy page and slash. I resonate more with a les paul, but I have found blending teles and strats to be a super key to tone and also opening up your range of playing. I find a les paul to be a guitar by guitar basis, so my suggestion is to play one because even if you resonate with a chunky neck and tall frets you may fall in love w a 60s fretless wonders. Weirder things have happened
I'll agree that it wasn't my finest hour but if you knew my boss you'd know this was the way less of the evils. And we'll, I got a les paul. I promised my mom I'd never do it again and I havent...so...😉

Im pretty sure the guy ended up going to jail to something or other and the music store got shut down back in the 90's.
It's a 1905 A1. Hadn't thought about it? All the stuff you see is cherry picked. I kept that mandolin because it has the original gibson label and faded serial number. It's the oldest gibson I have. Up next is a 1916 L4. please subscribe and join the madness 🙌
Dude, he just knew this crazy dude had given me a guitar and it didn't end up at his store. Grasping at straws. Literally the scum of the earth. I still hear his voice in my head 20 years later
Just curious, but why? Why 10 Les Paul's, why 10 PRS? Again just curious. I need about 4 guitars, two amps and I'm set. Also once the headstock is snapped, I'll move on.
@micemr great question. Because I love collecting, I love variety, and I have learned to love the little differences. I have a recording studio so I constantly am recording guitars, so anyone I work with can choose. It's not essential. There's no reason why you can't use 4. It's my passion in life and also the reason I made this channel
Right on! No judgement just curious. Maybe even a lil envious🤣 I def went through a period I had a bigger collection but it's just me, and too many sat unplayed. I just stuck to the acoustics and electrics that I always picked up and thinned the herd. Didn't realize u had a recording studio, that def makes a difference, and makes a lot more sense. We all have our quirks, and gravitate towards different guitars. Also find it fascinating what guitars people collect when they put a collection together and how different that collection would look like person to person
Ok. I’ve subscribed. Watched a few videos and have one question. What do you do for a living? Did you win the lottery? How do you have so many guitars? I’m thinking maybe it’s a green screen behind you. Hell I don’t know.
Haha thanks Steve! My fiance will tell you I was spending money in guitars instead of building a second bathroom on our house! So I'm not rich nor did I win the lottery, I'm just resourceful, have a good eye, a ton of passion, and bought over time. I run a recording studio, but I always joke I'm a "musical hustler." I have probably made the most money DJing in the last ten years, so yes, when people ask me what band I'm in I just tell them I'm a dj. FYI, the key to my collection is that I never buy on emotion. I have such diverse tastes that I would scour craigslist, ebay and reverb day in and out and when I saw something that seemed ridiculous I would go down the rabbit hole to confirm whatever I was looking at was def the best price on the planet. Then I'd try to get it for even less! So every guitar you see, or almost every guitar I bought because on that day it was the best deal on the planet. Then I traded up a ton. For example, my 1942 SJ45 (really just a super early SJ) was 19k at the store but I traded like 10 things for it I was only into for less than half that (and over many purchases). So a lot of the unattainable guitars I got by just turning 20 into 100 and then 100 into 1000 and then 1000 into 5000.
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist ok. That makes sense. I just bought my dream guitar. A Les Paul Custom and I thought about trading up for it but I want to keep all of the guitars I have now. I’ve sold too many for cheap when I needed the money that I wish I had back.
What Worcester store did you work at or are you still there? Is that store you are in now in Worcester? I live in Worcester and if that store exists in Worcester I need to go there immediately.
Haha, I spent a lot of summers in Cumberland and when I would take the L downtown sometimes you'd get that whiff of big city stench like NY. So I'm missing something. Did you order the Custom, take the Classic in trade and discount the Custom $1000, then keep the Classic without entering it in inventory? I had to watch it 3 times to put that together. 🤣
I never even took it in trade. My boss was stealing from me and changing my sales in the computer. So I told the guy don't bother trading it to the store, I wouldn't be able to give him enough. He then asked if I wanted it and I told him I couldn't afford it..he asked me if I knew anyone and I had the wherewithal even back then to say if you wanna talk to me I go to lunch at this deli down the street. On my lunch break I explained to him that I didn't want to rip him off for the les paul so if he wanted to just give it to me I would just take 1000 off the top of the les paul custom and get fired if my boss wanted me to. I was going to college in a month and he was ripping me off for my commission so I'd rather not let him screw that dude. So he gave me the guitar off the property and brought me the case 2 weeks later because he came in on a bike. Ordered him the les paul custom and took 1k of retail. My boss told me I was the first to sell one out of that store in years and 1k off retail was apparently still above the lowest price I was allowed to sell it for, so he praised me. It was when the guy, who was not smart at all, came back and asked if he could get my number to trade for his guitar back. That's when my boss made up that I took it in trade and never entered it into inventory. He didn't even know what he was talking about because in the court case he accused me of taking a flying v, not a les paul. The client was clearly on something and was contradicting himself over and over and my ex boss actually asked the judge to have his own witnesses testimony thrown out. Needless to say, I won.
for sure, I was 16 years old, man. still learning more difficult situations like this. the bottom line is that my boss was a scumbag and everyone got what they wanted. my boss just always wanted more. was it a fine line, absolutely, and I have certainly learned from that

It was perfect…
…until I found out weeks later that the high frets didn’t work. So now we’re trying to see if we can get the neck repaired.
It's always a learning experience. You know better for next time and take it in stride. I just broke the pickup selector on a 4k les paul because I was messing with it trying to see how it works because I'm a moron. It happens! Ok Those EMGS sound great …. I wasn’t expecting that bright articulate sound .
I have the same guitar (98) and it’s great but I’ve always liked the brighter sound of the lp custom pickups ….those EMGS sorta do that. My 71 custom was stolen grrr .

It's not bad at all, probably in the 8 and change range! Say that 5x fast! Thanks for being a part of what I do, welcome to the madness 🙌
I love the emg's in a les paul myself
This guitar is magic so its what sold me on emgs, probably in an unfair way! Thanks for watching Jared and please subscribe and join the madness
You 100% ripped off the store 😂
I'll agree that it wasn't my finest hour but if you knew my boss you'd know this was the way less of the evils. And we'll, I got a les paul. I promised my mom I'd never do it again and I havent...so...😉

Reminds me of the Cherry's Music Store my cousin worked at that I got my 1st guitar at. He used to use my cousin to try to fleece stolen shit to his friends and was just all together pretty shady. Lol I hope I don't come of THAT shady lol

How much for the Gibson in the back right? Is it an A-2?
It's a 1905 A1. Hadn't thought about it? All the stuff you see is cherry picked. I kept that mandolin because it has the original gibson label and faded serial number. It's the oldest gibson I have. Up next is a 1916 L4. please subscribe and join the madness 🙌

Benny I think I can still hear the sustain! lol
