This is great. I am new to the entire "host your own game server" concept. This was easy to follow BUT..... I own ArmA Reforger on my XBOX Do I also need it on the PC server or do I just point my Xbox to the PC? These are the errors: BACKEND (E): Param "#/gameHostBindAddress" is not allowed and must be removed. BACKEND (E): JSON is invalid! BACKEND (E): There are errors in server config! Very useful thanks. Hope BIS enables UPnP in next few updates. I suppose it will happen it's just a matter of time - it is an early release so can't expect everything to work 100%.
I'd be surprised if UPnP support was added as BI has not done that in any of their other games that I am aware of. UPnP is kinda security risk anyways tbh. But then again, they are trying to hit the mainstream audience now.

Arma 2 and Arma 3 have UPnP support - it's a simple MP Host check box for Listen servers and command line option for Dedicated servers - and works perfectly assuming the gateway router supports it and it's enabled. We've been using it for years. It automates port forwarding on a network - assuming Upnp is enabled on the gateway router as mentioned. And UPnP is not a major security risk. Any exploit requires that internal machines connected to the network are already compromised. So if your network and machines at home are free from malware infection and don't want to use dedicated IPs and mapping - UPnP is a very useful feature. As a consequence almost all routers these days support UPnP.
I was not aware of the A3 support, I'll have to look into that more. As far as UPnP, I work in enterprise environments so I'm a bit more security consensus. You don't really want to bet on no devices on your network having any malware. In a home setting where you have complete control over every device it isn't as concerning. Just a habit I've acquired to avoid UPnP.
I'm an IT engineer so also have my concerns about network security but imo for home use the advantagea far outweigh the risks with UPnP. In an enterprise environment UPnP would likely be an unsuitable solution - but then we're hardly likely to be playing Arma at work - or are we :)
Important Information/Updates: If you would like a batch script that automatically restarts the server when it crashes or when the game server closes for any reason (Example: The game mission ended) then I recommend using this batch file instead! Check that out here: pastebin.com/Ng8VBjUF It's also worth noting people have reported mixed results with using gameHostBindAddress and gameHostRegisterBindAddress. Some suggestions recommend setting gameHostBindAddress to your local IP address of the machine hosting the server (example: 192.168.1.5) and then setting gameHostBindAddress to your public IP address (can be found by typing "what's my IP" into Google). Others have stated setting gameHostRegisterBindAddress to your public IP and leaving gameHostBindAddress blank will fix the issue. Since the game was just released (and this is a Bohemia Interactive game after all) there will be issues that BI themselves will need to sort out. Hope this helps everyone! hello if I put the public ip as gamehostregister it is no longer possible to enter the server if on the same network. eg I have a server at home, everyone can log in except me who is on the same network as the server. Qualche soluzione?

Helpful tutorial. One thing you keep saying is Reforge it's "Reforger" mispronouncing it, Also to make it easier for users that don't know how to do all this stuff I would show them in another video how to install and setup the Server files within steam.
Yeah I swap between the two a lot for some reason. I typically recommend the Steam CMD with batch scripts method as it’s the typical way to handle dedicated servers and game updates. You could do it with the Steam interface but you would likely run into issues with the Steam client getting constantly logged out. Depends exactly on your setup, but it’s a viable way to run the server as well.

Is there a way to join the game while the server is hosted on the same PC? I've gotten it to where my friends can join but everytime I try its a black loading screen and then tells me I just can't connect

Last I checked no providers can host Xbox servers yet. Typically console servers can only be hosted through approved provides, last I saw no one has been approved and setup yet.

I've come back to say that I've fixed it. There wasn't a closing bracket somewhere in the code (I eventually added more to it and I guess deleted a bracket by accident)
I just had the same issue with accidently deleting a comma. To everyone else I suggest pausing at the end of the config part of the the tutorial and ensuring all the lines look exactly the same
Would you be able to edit the Start.bat file so it check if the server is running just like in your dayz video? I only ask because once the conflict mission is completed the server will force quit and not restart. Someone has to manually restart the server each time the mission is finished and I don't want to wake up at odd hours to click start and then go back to bed.

I was able to start a server at my home but my friend is not able to join. He is getting "Session Error: Connection has failed." When I look at my command line, I am seeing an error: "Formation of group SCR_AIGroup not found in SCR_AIWorld! Team members will not be spawned." Do you know why this is happening? I tried to look it up but I am not finding anything online.

Check your logs, it should state an error. Something is not correct in your config file. Not having a valid mission/scenario in your config can also cause this.
I think the reason several people have got the "#/gameHostBindAddress" is not allowed and must be removed." error is because the JSON config is outdated. The one on the server wiki now has a different layout and some different parametres. I modified that one and it works now.
@@drillcream Click on Link5 in the video description, go down to configuration file (1.3 in the contents bar), there is a link to that page and then at the bottom of that page there is a template and an example. Copy and modify that, because it's different to the video version. RUclips keeps deleting my comments if I put links in them and I don't want to risk getting banned for "bot activity"

Thanks for this guide. I got the server up. One thing that worries me is that the Ping is still high. I am in South Africa and the Ping shows the same as the other servers running in the UK? The ping should be close to 0 since it's on my local machine? Is this going through a proxy or something? Another thing, it seems like we are getting a lot of "internal server error" errors after random disconnects. Any ideas?
I'd be curious to see if other players (ideally in your region) see that high ping as well. If so, it might be an internet connection issue. As far as that error, I believe that's one of the common issues with the game itself at this moment in time.
nevermind turns out the mods i were subscribed to and put on the server weren't updated, had to manually update via ingame workshop pls don't make the same dumb mistake as me lol
i can join but when a friend wants to join he gets disconnected / a failed to connect message. i have every port open and firewall even turned off. he sees the server in the server list
You likely have a syntax error in your config find it and fix it or start with the base config provided and see if that works first before making any edits.

as i make the config.json document it changes the doc icon into an internet explorer one and when i try to open it it gives me some weird explorer page but not showing anysort of document i can edit. anyone able to help?

your probably trying to run gamemaster i had the same issue you need to use the Start Arma reforger file and make sure it stays open. then you need to join your server and become game master and use the properties to enable what factions you want that should fix it

If you add your local serverIP to "gameHostBindAddress" And Pub IP to "gameHostRegisterBindAddress" people who have issues connecting wont have the issue anymore. Atleast 3 people dont have the issue on my server anymore since i added those. Might be placebo so i cannot 100% confirm it ofc

I wouldn’t do it with Reforger anyway. This is just a test game for BI to play with the new engine tbh. It’s not going to have long term support anyway. I rather wait and do it on ArmA 4 anyway (whenever that happens).

do you know if the mission header is required, because I have only seen mission header for conflict but I’m trying to have a gamemaster
Im having a problem where my ping is at 999 i cannot find a solution and my friends cant join, any ideas?

Would you be able to edit the Start.bat file so it check if the server is running just like in your dayz video? I only ask because once the conflict mission is completed the server will force quit and not restart. Someone has to manually restart the server each time the mission is finished and I don't want to wake up at odd hours to click start and then go back to bed.

I was able to start a server at my home but my friend is not able to join. He is getting "Session Error: Connection has failed." When I look at my command line, I am seeing an error:
"Formation of group SCR_AIGroup not found in SCR_AIWorld! Team members will not be spawned." Do you know why this is happening? I tried to look it up but I am not finding anything online.

@@MetaalMeerkat sadly not yet no... it seems like i'm also getting disconnected from every server after some time .. even from my own.. since i'm not the only one with that problem, i decided to just wait some weeks ...

Check your logs, it should state an error. Something is not correct in your config file. Not having a valid mission/scenario in your config can also cause this.
Is this crossplay enabled?
I think the reason several people have got the "#/gameHostBindAddress" is not allowed and must be removed." error is because the JSON config is outdated.
The one on the server wiki now has a different layout and some different parametres.
I modified that one and it works now.

@@drillcream Click on Link5 in the video description, go down to configuration file (1.3 in the contents bar), there is a link to that page and then at the bottom of that page there is a template and an example.
Copy and modify that, because it's different to the video version.

Thanks for this guide. I got the server up. One thing that worries me is that the Ping is still high. I am in South Africa and the Ping shows the same as the other servers running in the UK? The ping should be close to 0 since it's on my local machine? Is this going through a proxy or something? Another thing, it seems like we are getting a lot of "internal server error" errors after random disconnects. Any ideas?
I'd be curious to see if other players (ideally in your region) see that high ping as well. If so, it might be an internet connection issue. As far as that error, I believe that's one of the common issues with the game itself at this moment in time.

nevermind turns out the mods i were subscribed to and put on the server weren't updated, had to manually update via ingame workshop

You likely have a syntax error in your config find it and fix it or start with the base config provided and see if that works first before making any edits.

Did you change the mission/scenario? That error indicates there is an issue with the name of the mission/scenario.

as i make the config.json document it changes the doc icon into an internet explorer one and when i try to open it it gives me some weird explorer page but not showing anysort of document i can edit. anyone able to help?
Use the "Open With" menu to open with Notepad or a different text editor.

The icon will change depending on what program you use to open json files, as long as it says "JSON File" on the right it should be fine.

It worked but the server is not popping up, gonna retrace my steps and figure out where stuff went wrong.
Make sure you check your logs and look to see if the server is boot looping or not. If that all looks good firewall/port forwarding.
how do i use admin mode on my server?
Use "#login passwordHere" to login. The password is set in the config.cfg. From there you can admin through the player list menu.

your probably trying to run gamemaster i had the same issue you need to use the Start Arma reforger file and make sure it stays open. then you need to join your server and become game master and use the properties to enable what factions you want that should fix it

As with all of my videos, this requires a legit version of the game.
If you add your local serverIP to "gameHostBindAddress" And Pub IP to "gameHostRegisterBindAddress" people who have issues connecting wont have the issue anymore.
Atleast 3 people dont have the issue on my server anymore since i added those.
Might be placebo so i cannot 100% confirm it ofc

I've talked about it with friends, I have the knowledge (a lot more than before) but I'm still iffy on the idea. I wouldn't want to take the OLRPG name anyway since it wouldn't be the same people (or the same owner).

I wouldn’t do it with Reforger anyway. This is just a test game for BI to play with the new engine tbh. It’s not going to have long term support anyway. I rather wait and do it on ArmA 4 anyway (whenever that happens).

same... server.bat is crashing when its running. seems to be an issue with reading the config.json?
I figured it out. read your logs closely. \documents\armareforgerserver\logs and it should tell you where the error is at in the JSON
per this :wiki/Arma_Reforger:Startup_Parameters
-maxFPS sets max FPS limit - useful for a server, or to force a client's max FPS.
Example
ArmaReforgerServer.exe -maxFPS 30
where do i put this ?

did not change it for the players .. if players set the FPS in there settings it works for them , am i misinterpreting that it should force players to 60 FPS ?.

This setting will set the server FPS to 60, not the client FPS. From what I can see you have everything set correctly.
