I've never been in a stock photo, but recently I had to take a training module and exam to renew my Passport Acceptance Agent credentials. One of the stock photos showed a couple going over paperwork with someone, and I recognized the woman from the "Distracted Boyfriend" meme. It was hilarious and a nice moment in an otherwise boring module.
Did she finally find a less distracted boyfriend?

My home town has two colleges. Both ran ads with the face of a "typical student". It was the same photo - and the model said in interview he'd never been to any college.

Dude, stock photos are one thing, but stealing a Facebook picture? Downright sleezy.
What almost certainly happened is that someone ripped a load of photos via an FB exploit, then packaged them up onto a stock photo site. Probably no more than a couple of hours work in total, and will likely make them a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand £/$/whatever a month more or less forever
@@talltroll7092 one of my friend's old photos from my private twitter (from years ago) was ripped after one of my friends got hacked, they where posted on a stock photo page and I asked to remove it but the damage (a lot of damage) had been done
Its obviously not me, but a news station used a picture of a fictional character in Rainbow 6: Siege in a story about border patrol. The character is called Blackbeard.

That said, if you google it, you can find the reddit post that first showed it and a few articles that show the picture and refer back to that reddit post. I actually have a story like this! So, going back about four years now, my older cousin was diagnosed with cancer. It took him about a year to get the all clear, but he got much better (his hair grew back curly and fluffy after he lost it all too - it was fine and straight before) and the candlelighters charity were like "Hey! Do you mind if we take some pictures of you for some promotional and fundraiser stuff because youre a survivor?" and my cousin of course was like yeah, sure. Did a bunch of poses, some he didn't like and some he had fun with, but nothing happened for a while.
Until about half a year later, where I see my cousin's dumb face on the back of one of the buses in our town. I literally pointed it out to my ma and was wheezing with laughter. He had this dumb smile on his face with his finger pointed up, staring at it, when I asked him about it he said that was the one pose he hated, and of course they chose it.
He's still on some of the buses now four years later, and i always point him out when i see him
I took some photos in the early 90s, I was also in some clothing catalogues I was around 4 or 5 at the time.. but then I ended up on some posters about speaking english in America.. the importance of it for the children, or something along the lines of that of that. I'm part Korean Caucasian and Yeah.... Mexican but I don't even speak spanish well... like barely. (I live in Southern Cali a lot of people here know atleast the basics lol) I don't even know how I ended up on there. A family friend saw it at a clinic somewhere. Needless to say my mom was super pissed lmao.
i had a fun one, little different. i used to own a restaurant in the USA and one day i found a facebook page of a business that not just stole my name, but the logo as well. they were in malaysia. we didn't do anything, we were just flattered. the best part was that they had the logo printed up on their tablecloths.
Now I feel like I want to find that restaurant since I live in Malaysia
Here is a trick. If news cameras are covering something you are at, just point your finger randomly at something in the distance. About an 80% chance you will be on the news for less than a second.

The one about the kiosk reminds me of a story my grandma told me. Many years ago, my grandparents' attic was infested with bats. So, what did my grandpa do to lure them out? He recorded the bats screaming in ultrasound on a tape recorder. Then, he played the tape back to them. The bats thought there were more bats outside and came out. And that's how they got rid of the bats! :D

So I've kinda had this happen to me... I posted a video to YT of me using a beard straightening brush and a few companies that sold them used a clip from my video in FACEBOOK ads for "diversity". I requested that my likeness that was being used WITHOUT my permission be removed from each of the ads. For the most part they complied, there was one or two that I had to get FACEBOOK involved to remove the ad.
Some where thire is a stock photo of my and my friends drinking in the bar around 2005. I seen it a few years ago and I would love to be 21 again.

My brother is an amateur photographer with a DeviantArt page. He does mostly landscapes but he does have a few of me posing, that he needed for college classes and whatnot. I never really thought about it but this post has me thinking now.
The ones about the White dude in Japan who found himself in an AIDS awareness ad and the guy who was depicted as mentally handicapped were my favorites! lol
I would imagine that this will happen more and more. Nowadays almost everybody has social media where they post pictures and video where it's pretty easy for people to copy, screenshot or record and re-purpose for whatever. Especially for memes.

A photo of my twin and i ended up on multiple random elementary schools' websites. We've had multiple people going "Have you been to X school?" in our youth
My mom is a book publisher and on one day at a family photo she said stick out your tongue, I asked why and she told me to just do it. About 4 months later I walk into a book store and se a book with my face on it sticking out my tongue. The book was call positive discipline.
Not a photo, but still kinda applies. My dad is an African musician, and his music was playing in the background of an African clothes store showcase.
No matter your privacy settings if you post on Facebook they own the rights to that photo. Even if it's of your vulva during childbirth. Read the small print of ToS.
Except in Germany, Germany has a specific laws for that apply to social media photo ownership.
I saw my cousin posing as a generic black guy on a "now hiring" poster at Aldi's. That day I found out that my cousin moonlighted as a male model on top of being a Veteran and a high school spanish teacher.

An aside:- avoiding inclusion in a stock photo. Our employer asked us to come to work dressed smartly one day as they were taking promotional photos for our department. We processed mailshot charity donations. I knew the score; front-view photos of managers sat attentively in their smart suits at their desks contrasted by over-the-shoulder 3/4 back views of us clerks in casual clothes busily opening envelopes. I did not want my employers to represent me with this less-favourable image just to promote their business, so I came to work in my very smartest blue pinstripe suit complete with waistcoat and tie, (a relic from my banking days), and did my best to look like a lawyer. Needless to say I avoided being photographed for the company promotional brochure, although my dress-code did not make me very popular with some of my clerical colleagues that day.
And, ironically, the ads in this are for Adobe Photo Stock......

This is gonna sound weird, but I can’t imagine stock image people talking. When I imagine these people on Reddit telling these stories, I just imagine these cardboard-cutout people sliding slowly across the screen as their voice radiate from their bodies.
Edit: also, I wish the pictures were shown in the video (if they could be found), but that would require digging through the Reddit comments to find them and then edit the video to include them, so I get it

just to add another to this: after my granparents passed their house was cleard tho my family hadnt finished yet (a few odd items of sentimental value left to collect). my mom worked for gpo telecoms and did a model shoot and i remember the picture growing up on my granparens sideboard. flash forward a few years later when in town with my family and there was that same picture on a market stall the centre piece of the old style telephones the guy was selling. the guy wouldnt give that photo back to us packed up n left after my dad confronted him about it. that picture will be returned to me one way or another. and if ur that guy reading this pls do the decent thing. happy mothers day mom.
I got my picture taken using a pottery wheel, The college sent a photographer around and I was just chatting with the instructor, on my and his own time. The photographer wanted to get some shots of people working in the pottery studio, but all the classes were done for the day. so they had me grab my biggest pot, it was drying, but still damp looking, and they took a dozen photos of me being instructed on how to make that pot. I was actually fairly advanced at the time and didn't need the instruction I had even fired the big kiln on my own a few times... but w/e,, a photo from those few shots ended up in a brochure, the course catalog, and the internet for several years.

was a part of this Lego work shop for a few years later after I left my home country and moved to Canada I returned and saw my face again an no one on the posters which was on lift and no one recognized me, it was very weird.

Had an ex that was an extra on an overrated show. I was staring at every black guy in a lackluster 13 reason why season. He wasn’t in it but they used his car.
Got him to pose for our school’s advertisement for the next semester, he broke up with me. He didn’t attend that semester but I saw his face everywhere since I worked on campus in the student services, seeing monitors displaying his face every other slide.

I'm baffled how much stock imagery gets used out of context. A ton of people kill each other on the daily on the west/south side of a city I border so if a TV is broadcasting the news, I'll be sure to see an image of a cop car with yellow tape cross-crossing the image OR a Desert Eagle with 9mm bullets scattered around. lolwut? Also B-roll footage will be of a location nowhere near the scene of a crime/accident, _miles_ away.
I'm going to Walmart. I'm going to find at least a couple of these people. Starting on the work clothes type isles.

Hah when I was in kindergarten a photo was taken of me drawing in class zoomed up to my face and to this day (I am now a senior of high school) the photo is the head photo of our school website and will probably be there for more years to come. I have in result of that seen my kindergarten self all over the internet because it is the head photo for the webite
As someone who has to visit iStock and such for my job... Yeah, there's a photo for any possible need/want. Teacher going ape? Check. 90 year old floating in a pool with a giant glass of alcohol? Seen it. Goth land surveyor? You better believe it. Baby catapult? Hooeey. =/ Seriously, I can only encourage people to take a stroll in the image libraries.

I had posted a photo of myself when I was between the ages of 10-13 on tumblr that was in no way inappropriate, and a few days later found it reblogged or whatever it’s called on a blog about whores. You can guess that blog was removed a few weeks later.. someone probably reported the repost because. Ya know. I was a minor, 💁🏼♀️
