Whether that be logo 3s, dominance in the paint, or slick handles. Derrick is balling without being flashy, so people outside the Boston fan base underestimate him.

    In 2013 I did my dissertation on the introduction of the zone defense to the nba and whether it has negated the need for a dominant low post scorer in order to win. Some added findings were fascinating;
    - theres a correlation to the zone introduction and teams adding more "shot creators".
    - early offense has become far more potent because anyone who is catching the D Board is pushing it, often because the added 3pt attempts means longer rebounds and so bigs push the ball to guards up the floor, meaning early-offense has more wings/guards making choices to score: higher efficiency
    - the pinch/high post is far more potent on catches than the low block under these rules. Its better spacing and teams get the ball reversal and swing swing far easier.
    - low post scoring was just as important as ever, but it came/comes on drives and less from "dominant big post players". I.e low post scoring is just as needed, but stretch bigs, earlier offense and higher P&R action mean the points are spread between the five "positions".
    Long story short I determined that essentially the NBA is you win because you executed what you were good at better than the oppoenent executed what they were good at (no matter the play style), and defense is pivitol in key spells throughout a game.
    LOVE the pod and their discussions ❤🏀

    • @djdoc06
      @djdoc06 Год назад +3

      I assume by “introduction of the zone”, you mean the “zone rule” changes where everybody used to have to guard somebody and you couldn’t double off the ball… Because most defenses are still variations of man defense, right?

    • @coachmarv7631
      @coachmarv7631 Год назад

      @djdoc06 yeah, essentially post 2002 when matchup zones were permitted. Full "zones" are tough to implement because the defensive 3 seconds is still so strongly imposed, but teams run more zone now than ever, even if only for stretches of 4 or 5 possessions at a time.
      Still fascinating all around 😊

I liken it to prime James Harden, some of the best offensive seasons of all time, but boy does it suck to watch someone shoot, flop, shoot free throws over and over and over. Now Embiid also is a great defender, but he's also 7 feet and like 280, you do not need to hit the floor 15 times a game!! And it shows in the playoffs, where the calls get tighter, and he becomes far less effective.

There's an IST-tournament and a play-in tournament now. The 82-game season is too long. We should compact the league, not expand. Maybe that would also lift the defense up from the gutter it's in right now. Flashier game isn't as much needed. The league's popularity is really good already.

    Pre-analytic shot selection was like picking batting lineups without access to batting averages or other stats: “oh he looks big and strong, let HIM bat cleanup.
    Plus the fact that the players and coaches had such a flawed perception of the value of the 3 point shot, means that they undervalued the shot, and never exploited the way it creates spacing.
    And modern spacing with the 3 turns any ball handler into Magic Johnson, because you’re always surrounded by multiple targets that can put the ball in at a .500 or better efg.

    I totally agree with Tim Leger when he said “you don’t need to be a great defensive team to win nba championship, you only need a great offensse and adequate defense “
    Clippers are the perfect team he’s describing. Clippers can dial up defensively when they need to and shut your water down in crucial moments of the game with Kawhi and Paul George.
    If Clippers figure out offensively, they’ll be scary

      No the issue with the clippers is their damn injury luck and the mental block during the bubble. The clippers go as far as a healthy group of players. Unfortunately Leonard can never seem to stay healthy when it matters the most.

    I would like to give Brad Stevens a plug: his deft handling of personnel has been crafty ... Signing Jaylen Brown to that massive extension created no rancor amongst the players; having a pro's pro like Al Holford ( think about this: the last player in the NBA from the last back-to-back NCAA champs!) come off the bench and sacrifice for the good of the team; playing through the front office /coaching scandal - even though some escaped accountability; and last - Kristaps Porzingas letting go of the bad treatment in Dallas, balling out in Washington, and going to an environment where he can be an over-the-hump game-changer is exciting to see

    People outside of Utah just see the Jazz as like full rebuild mode and they were willing to trade anyone. That is almost true, except those who follow the franchise closely know that we are a little further along in our rebuild than most people perceive and that Markkanen is probably the one untouchable veteran in a trade. Also, in the 2 weeks since this video was posted (maybe 2.5-3 weeks since they filmed), Jazz have figured something out and have had one of the best records in the league during that time frame. With a pretty strong schedule too.

      There have always been foul grifters. There was a rule change because of KD's foul-grifting twelve years ago. There have been players who've shot 10-12 free throws or more per game in every decade.
      The Warriors are small and Jokic is bigger and stronger than anyone on their roster. They have to foul to slow him. The same thing always happens with strong, dominant bigs - Shaq, Giannis, Embiid, David Robinson, Dwight Howard, Wilt Chamberlain... all shot a bunch of free throws.
      Steve Kerr is losing credibility with his enabling of Draymond Green and clinging to the past in his minutes allocation to underperforming veterans.

    We learned that Jaylen Brown was EASILY worth whatever the Celtics had to pay to keep him based on the current contract structure in the NBA . Easily. He’s so good. He dunks on everyone. He’s passing more. He’s delviped great chemistry with Derrick white AND KP. He’s so. Good.
    Also as far as his ppg, don’t forget how many games he either hasn’t played in the 4tg qtr, or didn’t play much in the 4th or didn’t really get many shots. He’ll have a game evety so often when he scores 20 in a half and then Tatum doesn’t really get his so he spends the second half catching up to and passing JB

    • @zdw1004
      @zdw1004 Год назад +1

      People who don’t understand JB getting his money simply don’t understand modern NBA money. You give your best players good contracts. You pay your best players or someone else will. If it doesn’t work out, you can use the contract as trade fodder later. The contract won’t seem as crazy in another year or 2 when the next series of players get their money (like JT). He’s not a perfect player, but he’s improved every year since entering the NBA and is proved to be an all-star caliber player. He’s making decisions with the ball MUCH faster this year, which is helping him lower the TOV and raise his floor production

    • @JKeemTV
      @JKeemTV Год назад

      It's been so cathartic to see the contract comments disappear since the season started, the man has been on a tear for the past month with his overall play (numbers went down for basically everyone but Tatum and that's to be expected).

      @schuylersavage276 11 месяцев назад

      @@zdw1004agreed. I can’t stand it man. And why is it always some false narrative surrounding JB?? Lol. Whether it’s that he’s not clutch because he has ONE bad playoff series after HaLF A DECaDE of good to great playoff series!( he was coming off a 30 ppg on 50/50 seires Vs Atlanta and then a 25 ppg and locked harden down for 2-3 full games vs sixers) or people say he has no left hand? Or simply no handle? When it’s clear as day, if you watch him year after year game after gmae, the dude has one of the better handles I’ve seen in the entire league for someone his size, and then he also is one of the better left hand finishers on drives for a right handed player that I’ve seen. Yes I know he gets too loose with the ball at times at the left nail and such, but ugh I can’t stand factually incorrect narratives. And then it seems like he never gets to be on the benefitting end of a narrative really. The one time was when he outplayed Tatum in the finals and finally the natual audience was saying that brown was gonna be mvp if Celtics won. But then people forgot about it like it never happened!
      During my viewing career there have been two players, Jaylen Brown and John Wall, who never seemed to get valdisifpn relative to what others would get validation for. Even if they would finally get respect in the moment, everyone would forget they did the thing that no one could ignore at the time. Compare that to other players who seemingly would have one seires or make one shot, and then for the rest of their careers evetotne would use that one expeience to validate that player no matter what.
      One thing that always stood out to me about Jaylen was that as he and Tatum were ascending to becoming all nba players, they evolved at differnet speeds, and for a while Jaylen was ahead of Tatum in a lot of ways before Tatums mind caught up to his skills. And the one group of people who were always aware of this were the opposing fan bases! Who you know have no bias. Maimi would always commend on our videos “thank God Boston is so dumb that they go away from Brown every game after he catches fire” or “Brown is better every game but Tatum always freezes him out when he has it going” and things like that. I wouldn’t even say that is totally done with, but Tatum got a lot better and I think they have both beofme ok with how it works. Brown still gets hot literally almost every single game, and then gets maybe inadvertently froze out for a bit, but it works.
