  • A little while ago I modified a 27 Marine AM transceiver to cover 28 MHz. I had some local contacts but nothing further than 50km. In this video I go out and try further afield. Ian VK3TB does the same but with even lower power - 1 watt from a similarly modified walkie talkie. Watch how we go in working each other and to north Queensland.

I've converted old cb radio's to various part of 10m, great fun to do and finds a new lease of life for an old radio.

Some years back, Wayne Green (73 Magazine) (SK) suggested a changed LO in a CB would jump up 2 mHz, into the 10M band. Had a blast with a set I modified that way. 73! KB3JA

@@KenTenTen Yes the suggestion was for an exact 2MHz shift up for 40ch AM
CBs to 28.965 to 29.405, i had a Bristol BCB 227 shifted up that way

I had a 1400 mile 8 minute AM qso with W7YO on my IC-705 mobile with a half size hamstick on 17m. That was 2.5 watts! That was fun! N4MAB

I was listening to a couple of Amateurs talking on 40m a few days ago and they were saying that there had been good openings on 10m over the past few weeks, obviously the day you did this video was one of those days....

Peter, Murphy got me! I was going to call you but my transceiver decided it wasn't going to transmit on AM! It was working OK previously! 73 de John

You certainly are getting beyond the original capabilities of that transceiver.

What do you think, is that QRM?

    • @vk3ye
      @vk3ye  5 месяцев назад +3

      Maybe a radar?

I herd RADAR mentioned, and that might be correct. As the interference was not consistent in repetition, and didn’t have the characteristics of being swept, perhaps some industrial equipment? I have QRM on the broadcast band, that is most likely a local bakery. 🤔
The contact in QLD, is impressive!

We are hearing the same QRM in UK. Last night most of the HF spectrum except for Top band was wiped out by this noise.

It could be the Chinese. Here in the Philippines, they mostly have A.M. broadcast on channel 22 on the C.B. band. And sometimes I here that same QRM on the Freeband.

If it’s the same over there, the most likely culprit is industry (common equipment). I will be interested in discovering the source/cause. Though not impossible, I don’t think it’s a duplicate of the Russian Woodpecker
      (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duga_radar).

Do you get sporadic-E propagation at this time of year in Australia?

Occasionally. But mainly over December-January - ie about 3 months ago.
