The second release in the Mushroom 50 singles series, treasured singer-songwriter Missy Higgins delivers a stirring rendition of The Triffids’ ‘Wide Open Road. Originally released in 1986, David McComb started writing 'Wide Open Road' in St Georges Road in Toorak, just around the corner from Michael Gudinski’s home.
Mushroom, one of the world’s most influential music and entertainment collectives, will be releasing a special series of re-imagined singles featuring artists covering classic Mushroom songs from across the past five decades.
In 1972, a 19-year-old Michael Gudinski formed Mushroom Records and Mushroom Music Publishing in Melbourne, and it didn’t take long for the companies to make a significant impact on the Australian music scene. By the mid ‘70s, Mushroom was at the epicentre of a seismic shift in the way Australians interacted with music and live entertainment, and things were never the same. Since then, Mushroom has been a driving force of near every element of the region’s music and entertainment industry, broadcasting Australian culture across the globe and bringing the world’s brightest talent to our doorstep for fifty years. Over the decades, Mushroom has blossomed into a group of two-dozen specialist music and entertainment companies that are each leaders in their respective fields. The Mushroom Group now incorporates international and domestic touring, booking agencies, artist and talent management, record labels, music publishing, merchandising, creative and marketing services, venues, exhibition and event production, film production and distribution, and more.
Throughout 2023, Mushroom has big plans commemorate fifty years of unforgettable songs, artists and moments with several upcoming special projects. So, keep your eyes and ears peeled for what promises to be a historic celebration of 50 Years of Making Noise.

The wailing hurt of Higgins' version is touching. This performance captures the feeling of being so cut by betrayal that you would indeed come gunning after your lover... while still wishing they would come back to you.
Where was I when I first heard the original? Travelling the Hay plains. I had to stop the car because the tears meant I couldn't see to drive. David McComb would be proud of your version, Ms Higgins. You make it your own and yes, I'm crying again but they're good tears - thanks.

Hello from Toronto. I've never heard this song before and it's gorgeous. I haven't listened to the original yet, but your cover truly moved me. You sound so powerful and bring so much emotion to the lyrics - - I love it. I first heard you when you released Where I Stood (another breakup!). Whenever a friend breaks up with someone I say "congratulations, and I'm sorry" because breakups are caught between those two conflicting feelings aren't they? Thank you for channelling your feelings through music that has reached me. I hope you come to Toronto sometime I'd love to see you live, and you seem like a very down to earth kind person.
