Honestly most of these seem like the reason they’re “not that easy” is because someone working for a promotion/commission would have to put time and effort into the process. That’s not really a good reason to not fix a problem.

As a business you can't do that, imagine if the NFL outsourced footballs and then one season the company that made them makes them twice as expensive. About the gloves... It's exactly 100% "we don't use them, cause we don't use them". It's not like making better gloves is impossible, we don't have material or something like that, it's just some people saying no and most of the community doesn't care so it's not big enough deal. Similar case to instant replays during the fight. UFC can design new gloves and sell it for huge amount of money, commissions supposed to be there for athletes safety so... It would be pretty irrational to deny using safer gloves. Also other types of gloves are not tested, cause we're not testing other types of gloves. It's time to start.

My biggest problem with the video is Number #1 and #2.
Like, he says its a harder problem for fighters to get paid more.
It's not. The UFC is a public company. You can see how much they make and spend. Last time I checked, fighter pay was something like 18% of their spending whereas other sports it's closer to around 50%. I won't say that fighter pay is as simplistic as just "Pay them more" because more money doesn't just appear out of nowhere. They would either have to cut from another area or make more. That doesn't mean that it couldn't change within a year if they were forced it.
And then there's the "Union" issue. While the legal paperwork of forming a union and using it as a legal bargaining tool to sign agreements with fighters as a whole, it ignores the very simplistic purpose of a union, which is group bargaining power. They wouldn't need an actual union if every fighter on the roster agreed that looking out for your fellow fighter will benefit them more in the long term. As they say, a riding tide raises all ships. Instead you have fighters who have bought the UFC's pitch, which is you only get what you deserve. If you're not paid enough, it's not Dana's or the UFCs fault for paying so little, it's yours.
I wouldn't be surprised, either, if the highest paid fighters had the mindset of "Fuck you, I got mine. Get your own the way I did." Tommy cant argue against the fact that if the biggest draws of the UFC refused to fight until fighter pay for EVERYONE was raised. The kick in the teeth of this whole mess is the UFC taking fighters ability to make money on their own. The UFC wants to take advantage of the "free market" and tell fighters "Don't like it? Go fight somewhere else." while simultaneously restricting them from taking advantage of the market. It's disgraceful and it should have gotten the same backlash and outrage as the WWE trying to ban "talent" from having Twitch channels.

They should really consider a “week-long” weigh in phase. Something along the lines of you have to be within a certain percentage 5 days before weigh in. That way you’re not cutting all your weight in he last days. Make it a longer process. Fighters will learn to better manage their weight in the week (or 2) leading up to a fight.
Like if you need to make 155 for the fight, you need to be no more than 170 or 165 the week before. Something like that. I’m just spit-balling.

Also the lower weight classes would become non existent. My only issues with weighing in around the year is weight it so inconsistent. Before even cutting weight these guys drop a ton of weight just working out as hard as they can everyday, and they spend more time outside of camp. Meaning most of their weigh ins are gonna be significantly higher than when they're actually at peak performance after a hard camp with better nutrition.

Respectfully, there’s a difference between someone cavalierly stating something unattainable vs something difficult to attain but a legitimate objective. This boils down to executing any of these is high risk business. But doesn’t make it less worthy of pursuing.
Weigh ins is obviously doable tiered on stages. This is the old ncaa way of drug testing for short sprinters which is all I can speak to. Same with body fat% limits. You monitor on the lead up to championship season to catch swings. There would be misses which is bad for business.
Gloves, all good points. But they made Reebok happen. Regardless fair point. They COULD do this but it’ll be at an eye watering cost.
Unified might be close to impossible given the regulations needing legislature, and thus, bureaucracy.
Tough video and position to take but feels like a good reminder that the ufc is a successful business for a reason. And if something hasn’t happened, it’s not always bc they can’t do it. It still has to be good for said business.

Other than the argument of "if u got the answers just go do.it yourself" being piss poor, that line of thinking nobody can complain about anything. Dont like how the president's handling things? Stfu and just run for president yourself if it's so easy...😑 The main problem is revenue splits, and yes the UFC is screwing the fighters. Bellator fighters receive 45% of revenue splits and Bellator is still turning a profit despite having a much smaller market share. Theres definitely overheads we dont know about when it comes to paying combat sport athletes but if you think that 16% is their fair market value I want whatever you're smoking.
Yes Dana built the company up to where it is now (with the help of his billionaire buddies who put up all the money).and hes been more than fairly compensated. Hes worth several hundred million, just from his share of UFC while paying athletes that risk their health more than any other sport by far a few thousand dollars for show money in some cases. As obnoxious as McGregor can be, the amount of revenue he brought into the UFC vs his pay in the beginning was an absolute joke. Should have been getting at least 20mil before ppv points, not 2mil during the height of McGregor mania...that's a fkn joke. Since theres no union they're gonna continue to get horrible compensation for the value they bring because it's a dictatorship as of right now and the leader is only beholden to his shareholders and increasing profit margins, not what's in the best interest of the fighters which is why the UFC needs a union more than any other sport....you'll see if there ever is a union all the sudden fighters will magically get paid way more and the UFC wont go out of business, kind of proving the point why so many people are rightfully in favor of increased fighter pay and workplace rights

One thing to remember about “rules” and “sport” is that no one wants to watch their favorite fighters die in the octagon, especially if there’s “anything” we can do about it. If you watched the original UFC (and liked it as I have), you’ll remember that there was no such thing as a “doctor stoppage”, someone almost had to die before big Jon stopped it. That’s where the “rules” began. So IDGAF, I like safe and competitive fights, not one sided executions. Just my two pennies, also “super necessary”.

That’s where the “governing bodies” come into play. Let’s be real, it’s a racket, it’s a mob, you have to pay the mob tax to get the mob off your back. You'd see a fighters union happen overnight if just days before a major card like 276 champions like Izzy and Volk refuse to compete until there's some sort of collective bargaining agreement. The reason why union efforts of the past failed is that they were headed by people already retired (gsp, Randy Couture), on their way to retirement (cowboy) or journeymen (Leslie smith), its kinda easy for them to put their necks on the line. No major sports union was created by over the hill and middling competitors, You need people who are currently at the top of the sport willing to put their professional accomplishments on the line to spark that change. You hear guys like Jorge, Colby, Jones, Diaz and Ngannou speak out on fighter pay and other grievances but when daddy Dana dangles a carrort in front of them suddenly they get quiet, once they get something out of their public statements they quickly forget the " *WE* " in those statements. @--_--IMP--_-- 2 года назад

@@ethanedwards7756 Health often takes a back seat to gaining a performance-enhancing advantage; weight cuts are no exception. Weight cuts effectively make weigh-ins (and even weight classes) pointless, especially when the last weigh-in is more than a full day before the fight, which gives fighters time to put all of that water weight back on before the fight starts. Fighters have figured out how to cheat the system to give themselves a weight advantage. Weight cuts (particularly the "water weight" cuts that have become the norm) are only a thing because they allow fighters to fight at weights significantly above the upper weight limit of the division they are officially fighting in.
One option would be to implement a rule that requires your fight weight to not only be within the weight limits of the weight class you are fighting in, but be within 5% of your average walk-around weight over the ninety days before a fight or you fail the weigh-in, and have documented daily weigh-ins to monitor average weight in order to ensure that fighters weigh what they claim to weigh, including a weigh-in right before they enter the cage on fight day, which would be their official fight weight. This would completely eliminate unhealthy "water weight" cuts and almost entirely mitigate any need to cut more than a few pounds for any given fight. Just as important, it still allows fighters to change weight classes if they want (and even fight in multiple weight classes). Most fighters would balk at that idea though, because it takes away their ability to game the system. I see and hear a lot of bullshit excuses being given for why drastic "water weight" cuts are "necessary" and "unavoidable', and they are laughable every single time.
If fighters were required to fight at or near the same weight they walk around at, unhealthy "water weight" cuts like we see many times every single weekend would be completely eliminated, and none of the recurring weight cut "problems" we so often see would be a thing. I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen, though.

Take the gloves one: there’s nothing actually stopping the UFC, other than their need to control the branding in EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THE BROADCAST, from adopting safer and more effective gloves. So they wouldn’t have their Logo slathered all over the gloves that are moving at high speed and barely legible? And? The UFC logo is on the cage, on the canvas, on the screen between every round and between fights, etc etc etc. Imagine if the NFL banned Nike cleats because they didn’t want wide receivers running around with the Swoosh logo on their feet. It would be stupid. This whole video seems to try to dunk on what people are tweeting when twitter is not a place to propose fleshed out solutions anyway. adding a couple judges who exclusively watch and score the fight by watching the broadcast on a screen , without commentary,so they see what we see, and so the commentators don’t sway them. Perhaps even without the crowd to taint there decision.
I think this could help with scoring as I sometimes wonder if a judges position cageside could be the cause of some of the wacky scores we see.
If the action is all happening on the other side of the cage then you can’t accurately score the fight from your position.
Also monitor judges finances and pay them better.
Fighters have to agree to be tested randomly by USADA as part of fighting, I think it wouldn’t be too much to ask if as a judge you are scrutinized a little more than usual, and as a sweetener for this they get paid a bit more .

The weight cutting I heard from onefc is that it pairs down the 20% weight cuts to 10%. I feel like the better solution is usada random weigh in 3 months before the card to ensure the fighter is within reasonable range before the fight.

Yes, they need to do something like this, because the real competition becomes who can risk their life the most by cutting the most weight in the shortest time, so you have people in a weight class above fighting in a weight class or even 2 below, which is inherent unfair. The competition is supposed to be fighting, not weight cutting.

The problem with scoring fights is that it will always be subjective. Regardless of the way you judge them whether it's 10-9 or just "choosing" who won its still subjective. Some people put a lot of stock into damage, but some fighters cut up easy and others don't. It will never be cut and dry. 10-9 I think offers standards that are easier to follow IMO

Nah, the best way to deal with eye pokes is to take a point on every one, intentional or no, and also give the judges the ability to take that point from a replay. When it actually can impact the outcome of a fight, you'll see a lot less of them, and if it can be evaluated in replay to actually catch it every time it happens, fighters will start keeping their hands closed in striking and then opening them for grappling rather than keep them open because there are really no consequences.

Weight cutting can be fixed... Miss 2 times your fired .. your a professional god damnit... Have backups waiting for every fight. Half the roster are at the fights anyway. .stars that will evolve will be able to make weight so you won't have to worry about their fights getting cancelled.. if you miss weight it means all the expenses from camps fighters that miss weight will have to pay without getting a paycheck...teams will not stick behind fighters that can't make weight when they don't get paid... It can be done if weigh ins are same day... Levels the playing field... Fighters that fight their natural weight are at a disadvantage now... New stars will emerge to replace the cheaters cutting 30lbs a fight... No more excuses of a bad fight due to weight cut.. I can go on and on...there are positive and negatives with everything... Fighter pay is simple. The UFC currently pays 12-15% of the revenue from cards to the fighters. That’s simply ridiculously low to start with, and increasing this revenue split would increase fighter pay. I believe the NFL is a 50% split.

If you are a professional fighter with professional coaches, nutritionists and so on you should be able to keep your weight steady. You dont have to come in on fight day exactly on the maximum allowed weight you can be a bit lower. And it would make the weight of the fighters during the fightnigt closer to each other than the current system because right know depending how much weight you are able to cut you might bulk up way more than your opponent.
So its that simple. Weightins right before the fight (maybe early in the morning or a few hours earlier). But the fighters should keep their weight within the range the weightclass is supposed to be.
For example if you know you are allowed to weight a maximum of 155 but could also weight like 150 then you keep your weight within that range and voila problem solved. No dangerous weight cutting, even range of the weight differences would be smaller for sure. Ofcourse maybe a few times people get bulkier/fatter/dont want to train as hard/whatever the reason might be to get heavier, but its not like with the actual weight cuttin there are no fighters not making weight.... And as you can just keep a weight during the fight camp you now way earlier if you can reach your goal because you dont have to cut it last minute but you have basically your full camp to get to the weight you want to keep. You could even throw in a pre-weightin with 5 pounds higher range a week earlier or half a month earlier.

I think half point scoring would solve a lot of the problems without having to overhaul all the rules. Coin flip rounds are 10-9.5, normal rounds are 10-9, dominant rounds with control/moderate damage 10-8.5, dominant rounds with knockdowns/ref should’ve stopped it probably 10-8.
Not a perfect system, but it would stop 10-9s from being everything between 10-9.99 and 10-8.01 like it is now.

+2 for solidly winning a round.
+3 for dominantly winning a round.

I really think O'Malley did a good job pointing out the absurdity of the Judges in the post fight interview. Judging needs evolving. It needs to be improved. We need replay reviews. MMA guru pointed out O'Malley damaged Pedro's eye with that super accurate punch. Great video man. It's spot on! Literally its the correct eye, he showed how he started having issues with his eye from that punch then on, so everyone who said Pedro was milking getting his right eye touched was correct because its Pedro's left eye that's destroyed. O'Malley deserves credit for literally damaging Pedro to the point of stopping with in a round essentially... So I hope they see what that video pointed out because it is spot on. I'm really disappointed in the weasel's video. I really thought he was going to make a better breakdown but apparently he was so much of a Pedro fan that he couldn't even accurately asses the fight... Check out the mma guru RUclips channel he breaks down exactly what actually happened that we all missed in real time. O'Malley's just that fast.

Fixing the weight cutting problem: every time a ufc fighter gets usada tested, they get weighed. You take the 5-10 weights the fighter came in at and you assign them a minimum weight class at the end of that year. It’d be a mess for a few months with titles having to be moved, re-fought for, etc but imagine the fights we’d see if fighters didn’t have to cut serious weight. Maybe 5-6 lbs and that’s it. The fights would get better and the worst part about being an mma fighter(having to cut weight) disappears. You’d get guys are their best and no more weight bullying. More fair, more safe and better fights.

I think the biggest issue around judging fights is the 10-9 must, and closed scoring. Not only should we use open scoring, which yes I understand comes with a set of its own problems, but if we are gonna use the 10-9 must which we do, it needs to be tweaked. Not every round is even. Someone could narrowly scrape a 10-9 in a round that ultimately could have gone either way, but in another round score the same 10-9 in a round they won every second of. Judges should start implementing 10-8s more liberally. You can see rounds where even multiple knockdowns are scored where it’s still scored a 10-9. I think a 10-7 should be a round we all today think of as a 10-8 round. The last time I can remember a 10-7 is one judge giving that to max Holloway after he went super Saiyan god mode on kattar and even then, it might have also been just multiple 10-8. I think if a fighter narrowly wins a round, it’s a 10-9. If the round could go either way, 10-10, and if a fighter dominantly wins every second of a round 10-8. 10-7 can be a dominant round, where a fighter also scores knockdowns. When you factor this in and the more liberal useage of scoring other then just your standard 10-9 for everything outside of a utter domination, on top of open scoring, it would really help out. Yes I get that this could result in more draws, but with open scoring it means the fighter who’s up if they decide to coast could lose a fight they’d normally have won coasting, and a fighter who’s down will go into overdrive to try and win, and even if it does result in draws, in my opinion that is a LOT better then fighters winning controversial decisions because we are treating every round as equal when they clearly aren’t.

#8 could be possible, you would have to get all the states to agree that a centralised regulatory body decides what the "unified" rules are, much like how the UFC got MMA "legalised" across the country. If there is a rule change/modification, then a vote would be proposed, and if it passes with a majority, then that is the new rule across the board.

  • @Jonathan-bu7iv
    @Jonathan-bu7iv 2 года назад +1

Correct me if I’m wrong but #1 feels a bit dumb.
Why would you cut weight right before a match? You need to actually fight. What’s the point if you’re so dehydrated you can barely stand? Any fighter in their right mind would be in optimal health for a fight. I think it would promote a more fair weight class - where fighters strive to be as close to the cut, while fully hydrated and healthy - but most would probably be a bit under the limits, as opposed to above.

if you watch how the UFC books the rankings, you realize it's a little bit more of a tier system at this point over hard set individual numbers. Top 3-5 are almost always people you'd see in a title fight, whether just a win away or whatever. They're all fighters that can usually be put in a title fight. 6-10 is usually your gatekeepers, midcard lifers, and upcoming fighters, and 11-15 tends to be gatekeepers, struggling fighters, and newcomers just breaking through. Still subject to bookers discrepancy, but its not super inconsistent from this formula
