- In my humble opinion, what sets African music apart from western music is the ability to utilize simple harmony, married with interesting (often repetitive and persistent) rhythms to come up with the most beautiful music you will ever hear.
Oliver Mtukudzi was master at doing this. His amazing ability to utilize simple chord progressions… often same ones in a lot of different songs, but approached from completely different directions, while creating very diverse melodies, never seizes to amaze me. I took two of my favorite tunes of his in the same general 1 - 4 - 1/5 - 5 progression to try and demonstrate this.
‘‘Bvongodza Muto’ and ‘What’s Going On’ are two of my many favorite songs by Oliver Mtukudzi. I am not alone in that… THE Bonnie Raitt was so impressed by ‘What’s Going On’ so much that she had to record her own version of it. Backstage at a show we played with Tuku in Marin County - California in 2013, Bonnie wouldn’t stop waxing lyrical about the genius of the song. I will share a video of her commenting on it in the comments.
I took some liberties with the arrangement of the songs while trying to maintain their essence. Please go back and check out the original tunes (and download them from legit online distributors). I hope you enjoy them as much as I do… and that you enjoy my renditions of these songs, as well. I was privileged to tour, record and just spend a lot of time with Tuku and learned so much from the man. I sincerely hope that even a single speck of his genius rubbed off onto me.
Zivi may u assist Macheso to upgrade his mastering, his music is missing something u might know.
