Thanks everyone for including this conversation on the channel. Maurice you brought up such a pivotal element that I've been surprised to find straight guys (even black ones lol) have so much more access to than myself as a gay man: finding spaces where they can exercise mental health. It surprises me because us gay men are supposed to be the more "vulnerable" ones. I still think we are ahead in some ways. The barbershop has been a goldmine for me lately in that regard, which is ironic because personally I used to hate going. But I only started enjoying it because I knew I needed to finally put in the work to find it. I knew it no longer made sense to regularly go somewhere I wasn't getting that healthy exchange of communication and rapport. I've always had that "shy guy" air about me, but even I could tell I needed to search for somewhere everybody's time. It always seems to boil down to that two-way street.
Also, you made me think of the one time period in my life when I was seeing a therapist. That formal setting just wasn't doing it for me. So I wasn't finding the "will to actually do the work." I just needed more friends tbh. I would put not looking forward to talking about yourself for 45 minutes in the Top 5 worst feelings haha. Overall, this mental health thing is no joke. Being a gay man of color/black is a stunningly lonely experience and nothing is better than lending each other an ear. You're all amazing ♥

Everyday you make me proud. Everyone needs to understand it important to look after your mental health as well as your physical health, if not more so. Really important topic, keep speaking truth 👏🏽

It’s about breaking down barriers and challenging the stigma around allowing people in to what is a very sensitive and private side of a person being and opening up leaves a person feeling exposed and raw, a person has to feel ready and it’s also about opportunity and having someone you can trust and feel safe with, but sadly it usually takes a crisis before help is sauced, but here what you are doing is a start.
