im so happy for Derek O'Connor such a deserved win for him class jockey over 1000 P2P winners and just a classy humble guy really happy for him he ran the horse out of its skin and did it with patience.
And he wouldn't have the P2P winners if he had chosen the professional route. As things are he's done pretty well as an amateur and has more chances to get on good horses in Ireland than most English amateurs do (unless they, or their families, own the horses).
I think that if you listen you will find that most jump jockeys, both amateur and professional, are polite. The professionals rely on being polite to owners and trainers to earn a living and the amateurs (except for those riding their own or family horses) need to keep the peace with the rest of the industry too. It is the horse which wins, the horse's name which is in the headline; and the jockey is something of an afterthought. To draw an analogy from cricket in times past they are regarded as "players" not as "gentlemen" with the exception of the amateurs who are always noted on the race-cards as Mr (or Miss/Mrs in the case of women). Professional jockeys are referred to by their surnames only as the servants which they have always been - hired hands paid a fixed fee for every race (and anything else is a bonus... some make a lot of bonuses some make almost none). Jockeys, in the main, are pretty modest too. Stressing how lucky they are to get rides on good horses when they are interviewed after winning. They all know that they are just one fall away from the end of their career, or even their life. At this time of year I always remember JT McNamara's terrible fall in the Kim Muir Chase in 2013 (Thursday 14th March just as it will be when the race is run again tomorrow). He didn't get home to Ireland for 15 months and died just 2 years after that. He was an amateur in the same class as O'Conner and just as much of a gentleman, he was the same age as Derek O'Connor is now at his death - and left a wife and three young children. No jockey, or jockey's wife, ever forgets the possibility.
Quite a comment that I thought wasn't really necessary especially bringing up Young Mr McMcNamara. Also pro jockeys don't act all polite & arse sucking to owners/trainers because they have to for the best rides for to make their bread. I've seen loads of times owners trying to politely get best jockeys to ride their horses because of course you want the best for your horse. Also it's not just about the horse with the jockeys an afterthought, a horse can't guide & win itself I think in horse races.
Lewis is the kiss of death. I'm surprised he had time to comment on here as he was bragging about going to The Festival. Telling porkies again as you can't get on WiFi at the course when it's really busy.Best just lay his tips .
@musicmike1972 Well done Mike..Avoid the curse at all costs..I like to lay the horses he has cursed (apart from obvious odds on shots who my dogs could pick)
derek deserves better horses! he's so underrated he will school your horse b4 races tell you where you stand and if changes needed he's underused and under appreciated. And im happy emmet used him smart guy.
He chose to remain an amateur, and do things in a different way from the professionals and he is happy that way. He's had a handful of Cheltenham wins over more than a dozen years (the first in 2011) and he's won at Aintree too - as well as at the big festivals in Ireland. He generally rides in all the top amateur races (like this one) and he's had his share of luck in them as well as being the record holder in P2Ps. He has what he values - and unlike JT McNamara (his equal as an amateur rider and as a gentleman) he is still riding at 41 whereas John Thomas died at that age. I think that Derek would call himself lucky.
Mullins has so many in each I think they should just give the money for every race and they are all odds on the poor little punters can't. bet them one race today 6 horse race Mullins trained 5 of them 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔☹️☹️☹️
me own family is from there on granda's side i guess that's why i like him so much. Top man. Im actually most happy derek winning over any of the races today lol
A decent horse this and he really does jump for fun. Great ride by Derek, experienced rider with great skill. You certainly could do worse than consider this for the Gold Cup of 25. Congratulations to Emmet and the team, immaculate performance and preparation looked spot on. Capped a bad day for team England with just Kim Bailey getting them on the scoreboard.

Best amateur out there, still surprised he didn't turn pro to be honest.
Me and my cousin won 13.5k on this last leg. UP THE CORBETTS!
That's a serious animal, some of them jumps were absolutely breathtaking especially the last. And galloping all the way to the line, very impressive.
A fabulous gig ❤
Amazing and great patient ride
Felt moved to say, what a classy polite fella.

Corbetts Cross "Crossed" over to a dynamic win for Team Mullins!!❤
Poor Embassy gardens as soon as Martin clueless Lewis tipped him you knew he was bt

😂😂😂😂😂
I did not benefit from the wisdom of his tipping and backed Corbetts Cross instead, which was curse free.

English only had a few horses in this shows you the superior division between Ireland horses
we may have just seen the 2025 Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner (lets hope he stays sound)
