@ScreenPrism Great breakdown of a quality Black Mirror episode. Really love your channel. Does ScreenPrism take requests? If so, I'm curious if you could someday do an analysis of Hell on Wheels, particularly one about Gunderson (The Swede) and/or the deep and almost mystical relationship that Gunderson has with Bohannon.
I don't like the pervasive expectation that all romances must contain a lot of back and forth in plot to be considered strong or entertaining. I don't understand why people find the will-they-won't-they to be so interesting. I'd much rather see them get together and resolve the romance right away, then Fight Evil while being cute together. So much more interesting (and less anxiety-inducing) than "traditional" fighting/arguing/"hard-to-get" romance plots that take the entire story to resolve properly.
My favourite episode! At the end where the simulations get deleted I assume they don't feel pain or fear in that moment (judging by how they look), confusion maybe. No one will miss them; there's no grief or any negative feelings basically; they just end. I don't really think that's dark, especially compared to sitting alone with your guilt in a cabin for a 1000 years, being your own digital slave or getting electrocuted over and over again watching the self-righteous smiles of the people doing it. Plus after all, they had their catharsis and were finally together when it ended, at the peak of their feelings for each other
I mean I know the main point of Black Mirror is really to show how dark the near future can be with the further technology evolves, but I kind of like how every once in while there's some hopeful episodes with not so bleak endings 😂😂😂
My girlfriend and I have been through so much bullshit from family and supposed friends. Love at first sight isn't real. Or, it is and isn't. I fell in love with her at some party and I knew I was in it for long haul. It's taken a lot of work and opening up but 8 years later, she still gives me butterflies and makes me nervous af.i hope everyone can find someone who makes them feel loved and important.
SapphireJaxx GH I was able to find that but she said she’s not ready. She said she have to get hurt for her to be alive or some bullshit. I don’t understand it, why let go something good? Why she thinks that every relationship is the same? Well, she’s really insecure about herself maybe that’s why
Blue Beetle or she wasn’t interested cause love is bullshit and a fucking illusion. When you look at life in a realistic way you start to realize that life in the end nothing matters. So is it really worth it to go through a bunch of bullshit. Not To me.
I remember watching Hang the DJ and just waiting for 'the big bad thing' to happen, like most Black Mirror episodes, I was soooooooo worried for our main couple and so delighted when no stomach-lurching twist happened. Like the twist was there, but it as more of an "ohhhhhh" than an "OH FUCK NOOOOO".
I love Screenprism. So insightful and thought provoking. Beautifully constructed and paced. As closed to art as a review can be. Thank you for your efforts.
this is somehow both the happiest and the bleakest episode of the show. think that 1000 pairs of sentient simulations are made and exterminated for *every* pair the algorithim tests, for god knows how many people are on this app. it's a cookie genocide. the fridge logic is intense.
@Osamudiamen Blessing there's a lot of context in other black mirror episodes that shows that there's basically no effective difference between a physical person and their software duplicates.
I like to think this is kinda what happens in real life. I don't see the episode depressing in any way. Those simulations are just proof that you have a real connection with that one stranger you meet in real life and who you realise later that he/she is The One. When you both feel like you met before...and yes, this feeling does exist. This "soulmate" feeling. Maybe it's the memories of the 1000 simulations you've been through before 😁 I can relate so much. I have my 99.8% match in real life. Thank you Black Mirror for not giving me nightmares this time!
It surprised me how quickly this episode got me to root for the couple, really masterful work from writer, director and actors. And yes, I also thought about how those simulations were essentially killed. They obviously had minds and emotions of their own, otherwise they wouldn't be fit for the purpose. While I can imagine another Black Mirror episode focusing solely on that tragedy, it's completely glossed over here, with the episode kinda hoping you won't think much of it while being overwhelmed by the saccarine happy ending. Also... ScreenPrism theory - Debra is Susannah's imaginary friend? Who manifests when she's drunk?
I like to think I have pretty strict standards for video essays, and you guys really are quite wonderful. Easily in my top 5 video essayists. Well-reasoned, well-researched arguments and ideas, with beautifully edited videos (in which you actually credit the clips and art you use!) and narrated by a really professional, pleasant, reasonable voice. Don't change a thing. My favorite of your videos still has to be on Cinderella, you blew me away with that one.
I mainly see this episode as very dark. The idea of letting countless conscious beings suffer for years (in their experience) just to quickly check your compatibility with someone is utterly unethical and horrifying in my opinion.
That doesn't really add up that way it seems to me, since there are 1000 simulations done with 2 "persons" each, so 2000 people are suffering through all that. And in the episode that was just for the one "99,8%" check that ended up more or less happy and rebelling in 998 out of 1000 simulations. Now calculate in all the checks between people that are done that give much lower scores (of which there there will be many more), those simulations also have to suffer through all those years, hating most of it and not rebelling in the end.
I don't think they were suffering much more than normal people do. And we aren't certain they were deleted, hypothetically they could be sent to some sort of artificial heaven, like in San Junipero. If everyday phones have the computing power to do these simulations they could have some massive supercomputer that holds all the conciousnesses of the people. We just don't know.
Thank you so so much for these beautiful analyses, I have watched many other channels that study film and TV but you guys do it in such a fresh, uncynical way. This is art. Please keep it up!
what I liked abourt the episode is that the system actually was random (or at least it seems like it is), and just empircally pairs people who demonstrate passion for each other...making a somewhat credible twist on the Idea of star crossed lovers for the cynical like myself. And while indeed raisong the question of wether the love that developped in the 1000 simulations can flourish in the real world, where your whole life isn't solely focused on dating.
Great video as always. I think Black mirror is the most important show of this decade, not just for the quality, but for the social/philosophical commentary . What are your toughs on this? What do you think are the most important tv shows by decade?
Whilst they aren't "cookies" exactly, this is the transitional period that the cookies self awareness begins to kick in. With Amy's realisation that they're in a simulation, marks the beginning of their(cookies) sentience seen in previous episodes such as White Christmas and Black Museum.
I swear my writing skills have gotten by listening to this channel, I’ll be writing and you’re voice will be in my head! Thanks for the great content and better grade!😂👏
The notion that Hang the DJ is this season's San Junipero is completely wrong, imo. I find no hope or sweetness in San Junipero. Until they "officially" end it, San Junipero might as well be hell for those that inhabit it and find no other code to share eternity with. Even if they are just copies, I hate the handwaviness of Richard and Kelly's relationship by Kelly herself at the end. Choosing to be in a place where nothing matters, well, I simply couldn't think of a worse place to be in.
i dont think digital copy of amy n frank getting deleted is depressing. Yes at the level of real amy n frank the whole simulation happened in the matter of swipe. But at the level of digital copy it was forever. as Einstein's theory of relativity it does not matter what happens in others frame of reference. from the frame of ref of digital copy that love is still real love and is 100% for that instance even at cumulative angle it is 1%
The creepinest of it is about the story we are showed. It depicted an horrible love story were one accept being an sexual object while the other accept humiliation and depressing. Despite them finding love they will carry carry those scars in their romantic "match" Doubting is a blessing. When people take things for granted they may replicate some part of the simulation to feel alive instead of committing.
The way I thought about the app that got them the 99.8% match was that it searched for basically the majority of single people on the planet and that was the best match possible. I don't think it was the shows intentional message but that made me think they were saying love is a compromise and sacrifice with even a little luck thrown in. Like they were pointing out that even the best possible match for you on the planet still has a chance of not working out so you shouldn't go through life being unforgiving and searching for perfection.
After years of failed attempt at tinder. I met my one love, in Facebook, when a random person tagged both of us in a music video, saying we might like it. Then we had a conversation on that song and rest is history.
This channel does amazing work! I don't know where you guys came from but you tackle interesting topics nobody else tackles. I will very much like to suggest/request you guys do a video or videos on HBO's The Leftovers. That show is chock full of dissecting and interpretation
My favorite episode for sure. Even the romance turned out to be simulations! Lol which was the shocking moment like any other black mirror episodes. We can use non depressing episodes from time to time! Lol n i liked that san junipero episode as well.
Love is strenghened by overcoming obstacles? I tend to believe that the existence of obstacles gives the illusion of love. Through litterature, we very early associate the idea of grandiose love with suffering and struggling..with ultimate sacrifices and impossible outcomes... this helps to build the illusion of live, ok, the state of mind favorable to love... some believe so much that obstacles strenghen live that they purposely creates tensions and stage fights within their couple to spice it up.. true love is the quiet long lived peace giving love, and the only way to have it is to steadily love oneself first, that self worth and self confidence give the proper foundations to built a healthy relationship where the other is appreciated for what he gives into the relationship (but not deseperately needed to give us purpose and value in life), and the other is tolerated for his flaws as long as they are not harmful.. but we need rand obstacles and emotional rollerco in order not to think leisurly and analize attentively the relationship, nor ourselves for that matter. Love is a distraction, a denial, a gateaway from our reality. It doesnot survive ling because reality always catchs up with us
This is my favorite Black Mirror episode and this is the most nuanced and persuasive interpretation I've seen of it. My first impression was that the ending was deeply lovely and romantic. At first I thought that all of those simulations were different incarcerations of the characters and that the dazzling spectacle was a representation of divine intervention liberating them from an inhuman man-made system keeping them apart and forcing them into intimacy with strangers. But now that I understand that all those versions of the protagonists are sentient simulations, and that what I thought was transcendence of the system was actually the culmination of the system... The enslavement and coerced intimacy the simulation beings went through to arrive at the possibly happy ending for their real world counterparts is disturbing. I'm glad the creator intended to make a more optimistic episode. But maybe his rather dark imagination couldn't help creating a happier ending with disturbing implications. Too bad my mis-reading wasn't the really story...
this is just a fabulous channel. I don't think most people realize, but their insights have a level of spiritual depth that is spiritual in the broadest sense of the word. It is intended to move the human race forward. Thank you so much for all your work. One day I'll write a book, and I'll have to credit this channel for what they did for my upbringing. Love to all who read this.
Anyone disillusioned by dating apps and websites should remind themselves that we are in the beta testing stage of this stuff. Nobody really got serious about it until about 15 years ago. Dating apps are at the same stage that computer games were in the 80s, and we all see how that changed. Also, you should talk to people who lived a lot of their adult lives before the digital world. Once you got out of college, unless you were lucky enough to be in a job where you met a lot of people of the opposite sex, it got a lot harder to meet anyone. (And if you were gay - even harder.) Especially as you got older. My mom's friend graduated college in 1977, really wanted a relationship but just couldn't meet enough guys in her grade school teacher environment, was alone for 20 years, got sick with cancer at 42, finally met someone, but died in 2000 at 47. Do dating apps really sound so bad compared to that?
How can they "remember" each other if they were all copies from the person's state before the very first simulation and thus each simulation is a blank canvas. Great episode, as usual. To this day, the song "Hang the Dj" still brings snowy flashbacks from last Winter.
You ladies did an excellent job on this we the public appreciate you 2 for giving us a clearer view of this episode I hope you will continue explaining Black mirror ‘s episodes because at times we try to make cents of what it’s all about! This is becoming the public’s favorite place to find the answers
I love this episode so much!!!! I was so scared that it was going to end up being like every other Black Mirror episode and end badly for them. Thankfully it was like San Junipero and ended on a positive note. It really invested me in the romance and I was terrified that everything would go to ruins, especially after Frank checked the expiration date and it started recalibrating 😢
It’s funny this video is in my recommended cuz I feel this way about someone I’ve met in this life. I feel like I’ve loved him in every life I’ve ever lived.
Asking someone if they are in love is like asking someone if they have had an orgasm. If they say "Well, I don't know...I think so, maybe" then the answer's NO. If they smile and say "Yes!!!!!!!!!!" the answers an obvious YES.
here's a crazy idea for a black mirror episode: let's say there is machine that shoots a person not only from galaxy to galaxy in less than a millisecond but also shoots the person outside the point where the universe stops expanding in less than a day. what's the point of this you ask? well there is a theory that once the universe stops expanding after which it will snap back to the center destroying and creating the universe at same time with a big bang. Some even say that time is a endless loop, and once you die you are born again by same mother only to live the same life again but with memories lost from the previous loop. So let's say that once you leave bounds of the universe your essentially cryogenically frozen until the universe is destroyed then reborn in which, if time is a loop, you are sent back to earth at any year you desire with all memories still intact. so it's time travel? well it doesn't really affect the past loops as much as it affects future ones. your essentially throwing stones in a river. well how is that a story? well no one really knows if universe will create anew, or if time is loop, hell even if the machine works to keep a person stable that long. it is quite literally Schrodinger's cat for each use since using the machine is a one way trip in that case. So let's say Bill uses the machine to retry at life because of his debt from gambling, so he convinces his Bill #2 to live a life away from gambling which leads him to have 9-5 job and just generally boring life in which turn causes him to use to machine to convince Bill #3 to have exciting life of gambling, this eventually causes jumbled mess of who Bill wants to be and what he desires to have, resulting in all Bills living half a life essentially dieing with only false sense of self correction since new versions always defy the previous Then there is Tom who is does not trust the machine and instead believes in Christianity. but as time goes by more and more people use the machine to change there life or just be with people that abandon them to use the machine. Tom begins to regret that he live his life with same focused value instead wishing he taken more opportunities that given to him. More and more people he knows disappear as he gets older, eventually he questions his faith or if there is a life after since he does not know if the theory time loop is correct. However he can't bring himself to use the machine because grew thinking it will only kill him because that was the only thing use to rationalize his continuing faith.

I was terrified this episode would end on a negative note. But it was a great comfort in the end. As always I loved your analysis.
Willken29 I actually wished it did. Like true reality not a fairy tale.
Jenathen T I do love my tragedies, but a seemingly happy ending for these two just felt right to me.
Laverne Blaszczyk Shit, that's a little out there, even for Black Mirror standards.
Huh, I found the ending really depressing. I’ll spare you the story, though, since I already wrote a way too long comment about it lol

This was my favorite single episode of any show all year.
Wow great analysis. Really just brings in hopes and brings it all together. Thanks

Black Museum yeah that episode was good man but it sucked that he got electrocuted so many times and turn into a. Docile person

Everything comes to an end, at least they end up together
I mean I know the main point of Black Mirror is really to show how dark the near future can be with the further technology evolves, but I kind of like how every once in while there's some hopeful episodes with not so bleak endings 😂😂😂
Why is this so accurate?
Those are always my favorite episodes even though I did start watching the show for the dark themes. They are kinda like refreshing pallet cleansers.
You’re really missing the point of Black Mirror if you think its overarching message is that technology is bad.

*I'M NOT CRYING! YOU'RE CRYING!!!*
*sniff*
For real tho, I loved this analysis and this episode
YAY MORE BLACK MIRROR 🙌🙌
It was cool to see you :D continue with your great job :)
Yep l love this channel
I’m a fur believe this happen after cookies were given rights and am hopeful they were put in a cloud or something after given rights
I loved this episode. Great video :)
How can they "remember" each other if they were all copies from the person's state before the very first simulation and thus each simulation is a blank canvas.
Great episode, as usual. To this day, the song "Hang the Dj" still brings snowy flashbacks from last Winter.
Got a commercial before the video for some different show that played the song “Anyone who knows what love is”....
My fav black mirror episode is San Junipero, this is the second one 😍
You ladies did an excellent job on this we the public appreciate you 2 for giving us a clearer view of this episode I hope you will continue explaining Black mirror ‘s episodes because at times we try to make cents of what it’s all about! This is becoming the public’s favorite place to find the answers
i would so use this app
So these are the brilliant ladies behind the channel. Keep up the good work!
Nice Work!!
Why am I crying? Lol
With the amount of romantic options we have today (and even more we will have in the future), it is ridiculous to think someone will only want YOU
I love this episode so much!!!! I was so scared that it was going to end up being like every other Black Mirror episode and end badly for them. Thankfully it was like San Junipero and ended on a positive note. It really invested me in the romance and I was terrified that everything would go to ruins, especially after Frank checked the expiration date and it started recalibrating 😢
seriously, keep up the good work. You guys have good content! :)
edit: also, please do more analysis of black mirror!
That was my fav black mirror episode ever! And this is my Fav screenPrism episode ever seems fitting
dude, this episode was really heartwarming
This was a really good episode. The end was so good. And now your explanation is kind of making me think about my own relationship
It’s funny this video is in my recommended cuz I feel this way about someone I’ve met in this life. I feel like I’ve loved him in every life I’ve ever lived.
I love this episode for some reason frank reminds me of me the way he is. And that girl is so fucking cute. I want a girl like that
Asking someone if they are in love is like asking someone if they have had an orgasm. If they say "Well, I don't know...I think so, maybe" then the answer's NO. If they smile and say "Yes!!!!!!!!!!" the answers an obvious YES.
Am I more than you bargained for?
I think it was the best episode of season 4...like San junipero was for season 3..
More Black Mirror videos please!!!
God I love me the Smiths!!!!
The fact that you're both women definitely encourage me to suscribe. Good job! 👏👏👏
Grecia López Bernal yeah and that's not sexist at all
I like this episode... Reminds me of Tim Minchin's song "If I Didn't Have You"
This channel is killing it.
oh man good call tying this back into tempest
This episode was my favorite out of the whole series 😊
I don’t know who is more cute, the couple from the film or the hosts of this series :)
here's a crazy idea for a black mirror episode:
let's say there is machine that shoots a person not only from galaxy to galaxy in less than a millisecond but also shoots the person outside the point where the universe stops expanding in less than a day.
what's the point of this you ask?
well there is a theory that once the universe stops expanding after which it will snap back to the center destroying and creating the universe at same time with a big bang.
So let's say Bill uses the machine to retry at life because of his debt from gambling, so he convinces his Bill #2 to live a life away from gambling which leads him to have 9-5 job and just generally boring life in which turn causes him to use to machine to convince Bill #3 to have exciting life of gambling, this eventually causes jumbled mess of who Bill wants to be and what he desires to have, resulting in all Bills living half a life essentially dieing with only false sense of self correction since new versions always defy the previous
Then there is Tom who is does not trust the machine and instead believes in Christianity. but as time goes by more and more people use the machine to change there life or just be with people that abandon them to use the machine.
