Spain is the worst country to be self employed in Europe, they make you pay a fee of almost 300€ per month + the accountant, even if you are not earning a penny. So in an example you are earning 10k a year they will take away 4k a year and make you pay taxes so you are left with not even 5k, I really don't understand why spanish people don't protest about it.

I agree it’s a rough ride especially when you’re starting out. The costs are simply not justifiable.

Thanks Tom for useful video. I was hoping to get residency in Spain this year. Is Autonomo an easy option? What happens if I can't afford to pay social security contributions?

Hello mate - honestly autónomo is a rough ride if you don’t have a network of people around you to help. Even then it’s still tough and the main reason is that horrible social security payment. Keep in mind that depending on your age you may be able to get some discount on it for at least a couple of years. If you can’t make payments you’ll lose access to all of the social services and life can even tougher. A lot of people here work under the table to avoid making payments but they won’t have a pension or any benefits if they get sick so it’s a risky business. Depending on your field of work if maybe get a contracted position until you’re established in Spain and then look to set something up for yourself at a later date. Best of luck with it - it’s a jungle out there!
