This version is absolutely brilliant!! Domingo's singing is equalled by his acting, and Vergara is perfect. I can not imagine thisbeing better. The idea of Carmen staying proud and aloof suits this much better than some I have seen where she is more torn. The hopelessness of Don Jose's love is so much starker and moving.

Part of the "Hommage to Seville" Emmy winning special he did with Ponelle and Levine in the late 1980s. Only thing wrong with it? It's only an hour long. The second scene from Carmen that ends the special, the final act, is better. Here, Don Jose is practically psychotic with obsession for Carmen and she is clinically sociopathic, with no sign of sympathy, empathy, compassion or just pity for this pathetic Don Jose. I think Ponelle's direction was too heavy handed. In the show's final scene, they both are more multi-dimensional and as a result, more compelling. Mil gracias por compartir.
