  • Michelangelo as a teenager spent several years with the Medici family studying sculpture under the tutelage of Bertoldo di Giovanni, who had been a assistant to the great sculpture Donatello. It was here in the sculpture garden and in the Medici Palace that Michelangelo developed ideas of art that would influence his work for the rest of his career. Sculptor and art historian John Edwards takes us through several of the consequences of this period of the young artist's life.

Would love some guidance on the dates. Lorenzo died in 1492. Verrocchio died in 1488 ... maybe I have the dates wrong for Verrocchio? Trying to understand the 50 yr gap in sculpture production mentioned in the video at 53s. Thanks!!

What this man says is complete nonsense. You are right. There is actually no time gap between the last produced sculpture by Del Verrocchio and the start of sculpting in the garden (also around 1488) It is closer to fifty days than 50 years
