  • Today I'm doing a full review of the Canon Powershot Pro1, the only Canon Powershot that was fitted with a L Series lens. Even 17 years later, the images from this camera hold up very well and this could easily be a daily camera for someone who wants good image quality and also wants to save weight. The age of the camera also means this is the cheapest L Lens that one can buy. This is a really solid camera that holds up nicely.

Thorough video, thanks! The photos really do have that filmic quality, the noise, the detail, the colour. Very nice!

Thanks. I need to get this camera out again and get some more images with it.

Oh my god THAT'S how you toggle between aperture and shutter speed!? It had been doing my head in, not being able to work out how to do that!

I think the video quality is the result of the codec built in the chip on the board. I can imagine if these lens with this sensor were on minidv camera that sends video signal to the cassette or to the computer it would be a cool film.

Yes, the video quality is quite low. I looked it up, the bitrate for this camera is like 500 bits. DVD video, 480p and 24fps is about 9000 bits. I don't think I even realized that was a thing until looking it up because of this camera.

I found this camera for $19 I have never used a “pro” camera before would you recommend this as a good starter camera?

Absolutely. The lens quality is spectacular. It has a fully automatic mode so that you can get started taking images and then all the "pro" modes that you can use as your skills improve. Very solid camera.
