  • I... don't make 18th century pockets. I don't make 18th century anything very often! But when some costube types offered the chance to swap pockets, I decided to take on a new sewing and historical costuming challenge and try my hand at something new!
    So, join me in seeing how this new accessory that every Georgian, Regency, and Colonial lady couldn't do without. POCKETS! For DRESSES!
    And also then go check out ‪@SwimminginaSeaofEstrogen‬ and ‪@RetroClaude‬ and ‪@rachelmaksy‬ who are also in this video and make IN-credible costumes, accessories, and videos!

      Definitely. This whole nonsense of modern women's clothing being built without functional pockets is so bogus. Everything I design that might need a pocket, GETS one. They don't "ruin the lines" the garment, if done right. FFS. Designers just need to be more creative and design for real bodies, not half-starved sticks.

      I do like Bernadettes videos but it can be a bit discouraging for myself or at least make me feel a bit sad that I’m not as aesthetically appealing in my craftsmanship. Seeing your sewing setup is a bit more like my own and how my grandmothers was. We just kind of drink tea, sew and watching something on the TV. It’s a very cozy or quiet way to end a day.

    I wore a lab coat to enter certain areas at work for 2 months, before discovering it has pocket slits, in addition to the patch pockets at the hips and breast.
    Now I can put my retractable key fob to the side, and pull it through my pocket when the coat is on, instead of leaving the bottoms snap open so I can access it through the front like I’m attempting to grope myself.
    Pocket slits. Making even contemporary lab coats easier to wear.

    I don't trust myself on a sewing machine (I'll probably sew my finger), so I generally do hand stitching. Yeah, I've found I love a good leather thimble for a bit more flexibility while still protecting the fingies you use it on. I think your pocket for her turned out so cute! You quite nailed the project. And the pocket you received is really fun! What a lovely video!

    • @anna_in_aotearoa3166

      That sounds super-helpful! My fingers are constantly scarred any time I'm doing hand sewing, but I find my metal thimble just too inflexible to be helpful, sigh. Think I spotted a (Bernadette?) video somewhere that mentioned how to make one's own leather thimble - must go hunt that down & see if I can cut down on the skim damage.. 🙈

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja 2 года назад +1

      A leather thimble (at least the one I’ve made) is too soft for my liking (it only took slightly longer for my middle finger to start hurting than if I’d not worn one at all), but I’m also quite picky when it comes to metal thimbles: the dimples need to be small and densely packed (coarse dimpling makes it more inflexible in use), and I prefer the sides to be pretty close to cylindrical, but the last part is just my preference and you may very well disagree.

    • @LucretiaPearl
      @LucretiaPearl 2 года назад +1

      @@ragnkja I haven't made any myself, so not sure the best leather for the leather versions. My favorite one is perfect & got it from a quilting shop near my hometown many years ago that might not exist anymore. The one I've gotten from the craft store near where I live now is a bit thicker & stiffer than preferred, but stays on no problem. But definitely go for what works for you. Your preferred metal thimble does sound better than what I usually see.

    What a great job you did. I made myself pockets for travelling inspired by 18th century pockets. I had an old golf skirt (for cycling, not golf) that was bit battered. I cut out all 6 pockets and attached attractively together and to the waist band and added both lacing and click snap closures from a water bottle holder. Now I can have my documents, my yarn, pattern and knitting in pockets around my waist when flying. Unfortunately I finished them in January 2020 planning trips up north and to the east coast so they haven't had their baptism of real travel yet, only used for hot summer dog walking so far.

    You're right, Rachel videos are always helpful! Your pocket looks nice and tidy, great work especially with all that hand sewing!
    You may not have any interest in learning to use a machine but if it helps, I taught myself on an older one from the 90's (pre-computery bells and whistles). It made the process a lot less intimidating for me. You can usually buy these cheap at garage sales and get them serviced for $100 or so and then you're off and running!

      @@TheWelshViking Can 100% understand going to hand sewing for a lot of stuff! 👍I use my machine constantly (especially for eeeeeendless skirt hems, sigh) but anytime there's something which needs finer control or careful shaping such as attaching trim or doing weird shapes, I'll always default back to hand sewing cos just don't have good enough machine skills to ensure it'll come out right if done mechanically (sigh) 😔
      It sounds like you're using an older machine too, & from experience, controlling the speed on those is much more of a challenge being fully pedal-based...? All it takes is an incautious twitch of the leg, and whoops!! 🤭 If you can get access to a modern machine with electronic stitch-speed control, might be worth having a wee play & seeing if that helps at all...?
      Sorry to hear you're so stressed at present - do hope you feel some freedom to postpone Youtubing if you need to...? I know that can play merry hob with the dang algorithm, but rest assured we your existing enthusiasts will definitely still be here even if we need to wait a little!

    Piecing is period! Don't worry about having to match up the binding. I'm also spotting a small issue with the bias binding - it's not cut on the bias XD It's still a cool tape but bias tape is probably easier to sew on.
    I've made one set of these and I used thrifted kid sheets so I now have pockets with dinosaur print on them and I absolutely love them.
    Anyway: I'm extremely jealous at your pocket with magnetic pin cushion because that is some extra level coolness. And I love the embroidery too!

      @@anna_in_aotearoa3166 The geographic references are actually all to the same local. Just in different time-zones, so to speak.
      Before Ottawa was made into the capital of the country it was a tough as nails little lumber town named Bytown (named after the British Colonel who built the canal that runs through town). And that tough little town is still at the heart of the place.
      Before it was an industrial area mostly focused on clear cutting the local forests it was a meeting place for the Native people who lived in the region. Pimisi means 'meeting place' in Algonquin.
      And there are actually two Ottawa's in North America - the second in Illinois. Because the Odawa tribe got forced marched / moved at least three times.
      So. A geographic locator in space and time. Because I am a nerd. And I want to acknowledge who was here before me. If I was being fancy I would say that I am in "Ottawa, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin. Home to the largest population of the Inuit Peoples outside of The North."

    What fun and it turned out so well! If you don't trust yourself on the sewing machine and you want to give it a go in future, you can slap a stack of Post-it Notes adhesive side down on the machine bed and guide your seam allowance along that. And cut the seam allowance too big and then trim it after. Left hand fingertips down on the fabric to steer and right hand grasping the fabric for fine control. And practice sewing traced lines on paper (which is stiff and easier to control) and THEN on scrap fabric.

    Pro-tip: invest in small safety pins (I rarely use straight pins anymore--I keep losing the little boogers and stabbing meself with 'em) and an iron. Whenever I make fiddly bits like pockets or working on the necklines of tunics and braid, I save my poor fingers the trouble of tightly holding things in place by first ironing anything that needs to be folded flat like binding, and then safety pin stuff into place, then I hand sew. Saves me a metric frak-ton of grief and stressed, muscle sore fingers!😘
