COMPLAINT: Thank you, City of Edmonton, for nothing. The new waste disposal system imposed on residentail areas proves how little thought, and meaningful consultation, was done before implementation of the new waste disposal systems - for either the users or the waste pick-up employees. One thing that seems to have been totally ignored is the differece between the waste disposal of stand alone residences versus condo's and apartments. Residences with large yards will, more likely, have gardens ... therefore are more likely to have compost watse. People in apartments and condos do not have gardens ... therefore, logically, will not have as much compost waste, other than spring and yard green space waste. Condos and apartments will have more recyclable waste (cardboard, cans, plastics), as their lifestyle leans more toward purchased foods products than home grown. In my section of the condo complex where I live we initally had 9 black bins provided - two have already been stolen. It seems that the bins are constantly overflowing no matter what the day. It could be immediately after City pick-up days. and going forth to the next pick-up day. This results in an unsightly mess of overflow bags lying around the black bins, some torn open, and garbage spilling out. Wind creates a even bigger mess with the blowing around of such exposed garbage. I don't like the mess. I feel it devalues my neighborhood and property. I also feel for the waste disposal persons who then have to pick-up this mess when it has been created by City Council, not them. The one and only compost bin that was delivered seems to sit alone, never overflowing, and rarely used. The recycle bin, althpough appreciated, is likewise quite often overflowing. Again, condo and apartment lifestyles do produce a significant amount of cardboard, plastic, etc. waste. Little thought seems to have been given to glass. I have a fair amount of glass I would like to properly dispose of but dumping glass into a bin such as has been provided seems an unnecessary risk factor for the waste disposal persons who will have to address it eventually. What was totally ignored is the yard waste. It was ignored so I will not bore you with my thoughts on that negligence. My conclusion to this complaint is: - most condo and apartment dwellers do not have individual bins of any kind, nor do they have space to secure them (from theft or vandleism) if they did - most do not have garages or secure yards to store the bins in even if we did have them - if the City wants less waste overall, they will have to start looking at manufacturing practices as well. When I buy something I need I have no say in how it is packaged, but I am being tasked with the responsibility of that packaging waste disposal. That is simply not fair. In tthe condo complex I live in we have been advocating for proper waste disposal by our neighbours for years, decades even. Most comply, but there are, and likely always will be, defiant persons who refuse to comply. Because they can be annonomous, these defiant people wil carry on carrying on just because they can. We, as their neighbours, cannot be held accountable for their behaviours. Sincerely sibmitted BTW - a humble Thank You to the garbage pick-up personnel. You are truly the unsung heros of our society. Your hard work and dedication are very honestly appreciated!
Hi Pat, we feel your pain but recommend you reach out to the City of Edmonton directly, or post on one of their social media pages. We can't guarantee that anyone there will see this comment. Cheers!
Beautiful video.
