Bachi are simple in design yet I feel like I always find something about other peoples bachi that's different. Whether its the shape of the hand or the way they grip it. I also love how there's diferent materials like oak, maple, or magnolia. Special bachis like flat bamboo bachi or diferent shape bachi like Miyake or clubs for yatai
This means players must have enough dedication to pay for different bachis for experimentation (ordering from different countries, paying for postage & handling), and sell the unsuitable bachis to the rest of the class. Also, there's different bachi lengths depending on the wadaiko -- Shime uses shorter bachi and Nagado uses longer bachi.
Hopefully, somebody figures out a mathematical formula for the ideal bachi length based on arm ratio or elbow to hand ratio to eliminated the guesswork.
That's just it, there's no formula that works for everyone. Elbow to fingertip was the one everyone used when I started, but...which fingertip? Pinky? Ring? Middle? No math can do it; people have to experiment, and that's the point of my video!
I'm lucky I'm not 6'2" tall with long arms. I'm a 5'6" Chinese man, which is 1 inch shorter than the Japanese male average. Perhaps the Japanese don't make long bachis because they don't have a tall average. I think the standard issue bachi is just fine for me. The bachis feels nice when I play.
