- In this video, I finish the van floor insulation and subfloor installation in my van. This took me a lot longer than I had anticipated, there are a lot of steps that require patience, creating templates, etc. I am stoked with how it turned out though, my floor feels super solid and secure.
I’ll be moving onto the wall and ceiling insulation next, so stay tuned. Yewwwwwwwww!

What color vinyl plank should I go with?? There are too many options lol
I'd do a light grey.
I would go with a color that is similar to the counter top.. and go with something on the cabinets and side walls the opposite.. will give good contrast... Honestly id go with a dark wood ... hides dirt ..
By far the best floor installation I've seen. Most I've seen have been putting the plywood directly on the metal.
You did it correctly.
Thanks!
Hey, we are looking at putting ply straight to metal. What's the downside of this? We live in Australia
@@michaelgillon6363 i could be wrong, but I believe that the cold metal (which water will sit on cause of condensation) against the porous wood could be a breeding ground for rust mold and mildew. I would do a layer of minicell between the corrugations, (.3 inch thickness for promasters) and then any wood you use for the floor, seal it with anti mold and mildew paint.
By far one of the most comprehensive conversion videos! Way to go!
thank you!
This is the dm video series I’ve been looking for!!!! I’m looking at buying a pro master and needed somewhere to start the process
Glad you found it helpful, good luck.
Yo bro just thought I'd comment saying ty for the videos. There's videos with hundreds of thousands of views that don't do it as clean and nice as you. Thanks for the help! Definitely a good conversion.
Thank you brother 🙏

@@JasonKlunk would you happen to have a video on how you drew the template? My girlfriend is amazing with pen and pencil but even she's finding it hard😅
Your templates came out so nice and in single pieces!
Man I like the way you doing your flooring. I bought my own pro master but I have no idea how to convert my van but I have been watching you doing it and I like your way
Thanks 👍
I'm fond of colors that coordinate well with dirt. Little floors get so dirty so fast. Nice work. I'm impressed with the care you have taken to get it right.
Thanks a ton for the video, giving me some really good ideas for my conversion project!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for sharing 😊
No problem 👍
about to lay down my own subfloor and I keep coming back to your videos. Thanks for making them so approachable! I'm using wool insulation but gonna be doing the same framing technique. Thanks!
nice, good luck!
Hi, looks great
Thank you! Cheers!
@JasonKlunk -- did you use an adhesive between the XPS board/frame and the subfloor? Or did you just screw it in? Love your videos they are very helpful
Just screws
Nice work! A question: you didn't put a plywood layer on glue, just screws? And the same question for insulation boards - they are just put inside without glue or i messed something?
Why did you do rattletrap below the simulation and why did you use a wood grid for the insulation? Why not just get large panels of insulation and secure with adhesive with the subfloor over? I have no idea what I’m doing but hope to one day.
Rattletrap helps a bit with the sound, it's not totally necessary. I don't think large panels of insulation as your base is a good idea, they are not strong enough for all of the weight from cabinets, etc. The wood grid is for support, the subfloor is supported by the grid, not by the insulation.
Very nice job! I don’t understand why people don’t *seal* all that raw wood because moisture + raw wood = mold/mildew. *Every* piece of raw wood in a van needs to be sealed - no exceptions! For “natural” finish wood use spar urethane (I like several coats of ‘satin’ sanding lightly between coats and rubbing out the final coat with 000 steel wool.
Thanks. Exactly
Subfloors nice
🙏
Really well done the floors and insulation are the base of the build if those aren't done well the while build will be a waste you have to build on a good foundation just like a house.
thanks, exactly!
Jason, did you consider taking out those two chunky plastic covers at the front corners of the floor? They block a good bit of usable floor space.
good question, I didn't take those off at all so I'm not sure what's behind them.
Is it enough airflow under the floor? I see some people glue wood slats on the raised ribs then add insulation on top. Tfs.
Hi Jason, very nicely done. Meticulous! I cannot find your video showing how to board the walls and ceiling up. Did you make one? Thanks a million.
Thanks! I'm not there yet, coming up soon though.
Hey Jason, I'm looking to purchase Baltic Birch Plywood for the subfloor and was wondering if you went with Baltic Birch or just regular birch? If you're happy with yours I'd love to know which grade you purchased and where as well. Thanks so much!
Hey - I did standard birch and I would do it again.
How much did the floor cost? Trying to figure out if is more worth it to buy a floor and just insulate underneath it.
Where do you usé the Sikaflex 221 in the subfloor installation...
And what do you use to seal the gap between the birch plywood and the side off the van and the gap between the plywood and the weel cover if yes with what is it the Sikaflex221...
Awesome job! What is the main purpose for the reflectix tape? Just to cover the cracks between the wood and the foam board?
Yeah, I used it to close up all the gaps/seams so you have one consistent layer of insulation.
Hey Jason! Do you need to secure the polyiso to the floor with adhesive? Or does it just float between the 1x2’s?
I secured mine, but they could probably just float.
Were the bolts you used the stock bolts from the d rings?
Jason did you keep your paper templates for insulation and plywood? I would buy a set from you.
Sorry, I didn't keep them.
I'm just going to put 1 inch polyiso right on top of ribs and factory plywood floor on top.
nice, let me know how it goes!
@@JasonKlunk done. It was easy because the factory floor made a perfect template for the iso. Actually went with a thinner insulation board that was more rigid and put a layer of 3/8 flooring felt under that. Then put the factory plywood/composite back on top. I'm on my way out the door now to find the longer tie down bolts
Hey Jason. How many rolls of reflective tape did you use? Maybe a dumb question, but a couple other RUclips videos had the poly iso reflective part facing down. Is there a proper way? Thanks
The polyiso that I used has foil on both sides. I think I went through 3 30' rolls and then maybe half of a larger roll.
Hey thanks for doing this. I'm starting my build shortly, also didn't want to screw through the floor if I could avoid it. I mean there are those awesome tie down threads, right? How's it looking after a few months? Still holding solid?
The floor is solid, it's not going anywhere.
@@JasonKlunk How do I remove the factory tiedown screws?
Are these tiedown screws all M8 size?
@@Trang-xq9fn I I just used a socket wrench with a torx bit (I believe it's T40). All of the ones I used were M8-1.25
@@JasonKlunk If I have about 1.25" additional layer on top of the metal van floor, would I need an M8 bolt screw that is 2" long to secure the additional layer?
@@JasonKlunk this is the first video I've seen that screws the floor through the van body. Most I saw were screwed into the frame that had been glued down. What is the advantage to going all the way through the floor metal?
Hey Jason! Kinda late to the game here but I am working on installing my subfloor in my Promaster as well and have those holes like you did where the tie downs were. What size of bolt did you put in those holes to secure the floor with?
There is a link in the description. They are M8X1.25 screws
@@JasonKlunk Are the just screwed into the floor of van? Also with decking screws? Why the two different screws?
Just found your channel, really good! I haven't seen further on from this video. in the areas where the floor panels meet, are you not concerned they might start to chip away?
hm, why would they chip?
@@JasonKlunkwalking over them, wear&tear.great video's btw,
This is just the subfloor, I'm installing vinyl flooring as the final layer.
@@JasonKlunk cool
Is rattle trap for heat and noise? Also, how necessary do you think putting in a subfloor is? I am also in Socal and I am wondering how useful floor insolation is given our pretty mild climate
Just for noise. The insulation in the floor makes a big difference IMO.
We are in the process of doing the floor now. After we painted the birch plywood with the bullseye 123 primer it left the plywood edges bubbly and peeling up. Did you run into this problem at all?
Hmm no I didn’t have any issues like that. I’m not sure what you mean when you say peeling up, do you have a picture uploaded somewhere I can see?
oh it was just some small blistering up from the wetness of the pain but its all good now thanks for your response
no problem 🤙
Jason what did you use to get the tie downs out.?
I used a torx bit, I don't remember what size though.
How long did you let the furring strips set until you took the weights off?
I just let them sit overnight, so about 8 hours or so.
So you just used tie down threads for subfloor? No adhesive?
Mr. Brillz I used construction adhesive on the frame that’s under the plywood subfloor.
Hey Jason, what screw did you use to drill your floor in the existing holes of the van?
There is a link in the description. They are M8X1.25 bolts.
Jason Klunk sorry I missed the link. Thanks a lot 🙏
Are you doing conversions for clients now?
Not at the moment
I'm getting into surfing, going to buy a 8ft foam board but I'm worried about my vision, I wear glasses and without them I'm basically blind any suggestions?
Hey, sorry I don't have any experience with this. Do you wear contacts at all? I watched a Q&A with Nathan Florence recently, and I think he recommended wearing the weekly contacts for surfing vs the daily contacts.
Per a prev comment, if you can get me a width measurement before you insulate it would be much appreciated, thanks
When he said bolt holds I thought he said butt holes
Leanna Soto hahahaha I’m glad somebody noticed that
If I may: buy quality double wall cardboard in 4 x 8 sheets instead of recycle cardboard boxes: the more accurate is the template, the more accurate the finished product will be.
George at humble road is the master
Space ship floor > camper van.
lol truth
Dude nice job, looking good.
Excited to watch the process.
Waiting for dealership to open up here in NY.
I also just learned about a recall in Promaster 2019 2500.
A stop sell is on my van. Have you heard of this. Something with the steering system.
Keep up the great work. Stay Well. John
thanks! yeah, it's a national recall for the 2019's. The fix was supposed to be out by March, but COVID changed all of that.

what size screws did you use to secure ply to frame?
