A totally underrated album. This song as well as Hallelujah and others are such intense masterpieces that I become weak every time I listen to them. I've only seen Cave live once, in Roskilde arround 2001 (or 02?) close to the release of this album. That is still one of the most magnificient shows I have ever attended.
I've seen this song live twice, with two different band line ups, and both were amazing. I play this to annoying heavy metal teenagers to show them that you can generate a "heavy" sound with a piano and violin every bit as much as twin guitar attacks.
Excellent Excellent song! I had the chance to see him and the seeds live on Oslo back when this tour was on, the croud woudln't go home and we got THREE standing ovations in form of extra songs each time until Nick ordered us to go home WHAT A NIGHT!!

I listen Nick Cave and the Bas Seeds for a 20 years . This album is one of my favourite ....unique masterpiece.
No more shall we part is my favorite as well. Been a fan since 1990 when I was 14 but No more Shall we part completely blew me away and it still does...
I just had to say that i'm addicted to this song... one of the reasons is the extreme feelings that Cave uses, like in all songs, but i think this one (live) he just sings with his full heart and soul. And very important, he can makes us feel the same... like it was said before, he is a truly genius!!!!
I listen to quite a lot of metal, and still I must say the 4:59 is one of the most epic and well-deserved head banging I've ever saw\heard. gotta love how this song starts so mellow and builds up so beautifully until it explodes.
A song as the response to the wrong picture people had about someone. “Call it intuition, call it a creeping suspicion, but their words of derision meant they hardly knew me, for even I could see in the way they looked at me…" Cave’s music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. Absolutely amazing and overwhelming!
I think the most underated singer in the history of modern music. If mtv had played him more he would be one of the most sold out quadroplatinum artist playing in wembley arena like celine dion. I think nick is bigger than Sinatra. Nice guy also met him on leister square once in L.F.F
All those lucky bastards in the audience got to see my favourite Cave song performed live. JEALOUS! The time I noticed his tickets this year, they were all sold out. I was more than gutted.
@psike5000 I agree! I agree, I agree!! You always hear people talking up Nick and the Bad Seeds older albums, The Boatman's Call, From Her to Eternity etc, but I think this album is one of the best. Not just the best from Cave and the Bad Seeds but the best ever. "Oh My Lord", Hallelujah", "We Came Along This Road", "The Sorrowful Wife" and the title track stand out in particular. I can never get enough of this album.
What an incredible, crazy and powerful song! This man is possessed... When you listen to the LP, you could think he sings alive! Am I the only one to cry on this song?
"Oh My Lord" I thought I'd take a walk today It's a mistake I sometimes make My children lay asleep in bed My wife lay wide-awake I kissed her softly on the brow I tried not to make a sound But with stony eyes she looked at me And gently squeezed my hand Call it a premonition, call it a crazy vision Call it intuition, something learned from mother But when she looked up at me, I could clearly see The Sword of Damocles hanging directly above her Oh Lord Oh my Lord Oh Lord How have I offended thee? Wrap your tender arms around me Oh Lord Oh Lord Oh My Lord They called at me through the fence They were not making any sense They claimed that I had lost the plot Kept saying that I was not The man I used to be They held their babes aloft Threw marsh mellows at the Security And said that I'd grown soft Call it intuition, call it a creeping suspicion, But their words of derision meant they hardly knew me For even I could see in the way they stared at me The Spear of Destiny sticking right through me Oh Lord Oh my lord Oh Lord How have I offended thee? Wrap your tender arms round me Oh Lord Oh lord Oh My Lord Now I'm at the hairdressers People watch me as they move past A guy wearing plastic antlers Presses his bum against the glass Now I'm down on my hands and knees And it's so fucking hot! Someone cries, "What are you looking for?" I scream, "The plot, the plot!" I grab my telephone, I call my wife at home She screams, "Leave us alone!" I say, "Hey, it's only me" The hairdresser with his scissors, he holds up the mirror I look back and shiver; I can't even believe what I can see Be mindful of the prayers you send Pray hard but pray with care For the tears that you are crying now Are just your answered prayers The ladders of life that we scale merrily Move mysteriously around So that when you think you're climbing up, man In fact you're climbing down Into the hollows of glamour, where with spikes and hammer With telescopic camera, they chose to turn the screw Oh I hate them, Ma! Oh I hate them, Pa! Oh I hate them all for what they went and done to you Oh Lord Oh my Lord Oh Lord How have I offended thee? Wrap your tender arms round me Oh Lord Oh Lord Oh My Lord
That staccato bit at the end is great! Now I'm going to have to re-listen to the studio version to see if it's there. For some reason I don't remember it.
@labowu Yes, my friend, but more due to David Eugene Edwards & his former band 16 Horsepower. Don't get me wrong, I like Cave as well, but not particulary fond of his voice, that's all :)
well danzig had done thirteen before giving it to cash...so maybe i give you a hint too... "a lie for a lie and a truth for a truth"...cave 's been there as well
Lots of people misinterpret the religious imagery in Nick's material. This song is a clever play on words - he's saying "oh my lord" in exasperation, but on the surface it sounds like a straight religious song. This LP was Nick's last really amazing album with the Bad Seeds... at least so far.
Johnny Cash introduced me to Nick Cave with his cover of The Mercy Seat. Then I heard this, and I was convinced of Cave's brilliance.
A totally underrated album. This song as well as Hallelujah and others are such intense masterpieces that I become weak every time I listen to them. WHAT A NIGHT!!
I listen Nick Cave and the Bas Seeds for a 20 years . This album is one of my favourite ....unique masterpiece.
+Barbara Damijanić Same here. Got every album he ever made ! But this one is the masterpiece no one can ever out perform!
No more shall we part is my favorite as well. Been a fan since 1990 when I was 14 but No more Shall we part completely blew me away and it still does...
Yes siree!
I just had to say that i'm addicted to this song... one of the reasons is the extreme feelings that Cave uses, like in all songs, but i think this one (live) he just sings with his full heart and soul. wow... one of the best live artists ever...
He´s such a talented artist, the greatest performer i ever seen.
I agree , I think it is a masterpiece, and one of nick caves best albums , and this song is one of my personal favorites. Simply amazing : )
words cant adds to this..........wow just love this man so much

Builds up into a fabulous crescendo...Nick & the boys in fantastic form. What a song !!
Nick and Warren were, and still are, completely awe-inspiring
This is a young Ellis, when still Blixa and Mick ? O.
yes
I listen to quite a lot of metal, and still I must say the 4:59 is one of the most epic and well-deserved head banging I've ever saw\heard.
gotta love how this song starts so mellow and builds up so beautifully until it explodes.
what an outstanding presentation ... every time Cave tops himself ... ! ♥
And the hairdresser held up her mirror...... Class

Absolutely amazing and overwhelming!
i so agree with your "uuffff" comment! it's the most appropriate thing to say after holding your breath for 8 minutes! unbelievable song!
A Warren-Blixa collaborative solo, now that's a fucking treat!
I think the most underated singer in the history of modern music. If mtv had played him more he would be one of the most sold out quadroplatinum artist playing in wembley arena like celine dion. I think nick is bigger than Sinatra. Nice guy also met him on leister square once in L.F.F
The last minute of the song still gives me chills every time.
beautiful song and video ,great artiste
seems like the comment section of real good music is where the normal people are at. thank you! ;p
Blixa's solo is wonderful
I get to see him live finally this summer. I hold a secret hope in my heart that he'll play this song.
@Jimaroc I'm afraid not but it was still I think the best concert I've ever been to :D
this is the best ncatbs song. genious.
This is sick-fascinating magic.
Absolutely!
All those lucky bastards in the audience got to see my favourite Cave song performed live. JEALOUS! The time I noticed his tickets this year, they were all sold out. I was more than gutted.
uuffffff indeed!
O, my Nick the Lord.
it is hard holding your breath for 8 minutes.... but this is what happens
its been almost a month since i found this song you posted...its also been a month i've been listening to it every day.
I scream, "The plot, the plot!"
Fantastic!!!
Nick IMMENSO.....CAPOLAVORO!!!
Beautifull....
So increasingly intense... wow!
a summum of poetry
AND Warren Ellis to boot! Perfection.
@psike5000 I agree! I agree, I agree!! You always hear people talking up Nick and the Bad Seeds older albums, The Boatman's Call, From Her to Eternity etc, but I think this album is one of the best. great song!!
Blixa And Warren are amazing!
Still amazing.
Fuckin' epic, I'll take this over some auto tuned drivel any day. His vocals are something special. Love me some Bad Seeds!
"... kept saying that I was not... "
Uff! Brr... he is really something.
Live at Le Transbordeur? It's a part of God Is In The House DVD, isn't it?
stupendo!
excelente!!! Lovelly!!!
When my wife (bless her heart and soul) left me, I played this song to smithereens. There can be so much comfort in music!
The tension in this song builds up like an orgasm...:)
Way to go, Nick!
Panagiotis Papotis If you haven't already, you need to listen to Loverman (the original Nick Cave version, not the Metallica one). You're welcome ;)
geniusz !!
0:48 another, younger, nick cave on the right side :)
God this song sends me into a frenetic thrashing of my deepest emotions...
Too bad the crowd sucks.
Crowds of Nick Cave gigs often see pretty quiet, probably just caught up in the performance and just listening and admiring it all
devil + god = Nick Cave
Oh yessss this is totally uufffff !!!!!
troppo bravo
This must be one of the sadest songs in the world, but Nick makes it a beautiful experience.. Wonderful performance, sends shivers down my spine
What an incredible, crazy and powerful song! This man is possessed... When you listen to the LP, you could think he sings alive! Am I the only one to cry on this song?
@mustaine89 I finally saw him for the first time last year with Grinderman. It was breathtaking.
On the money
Sounds like the later version of the mercy seat, well the piano does. Great though.
"Oh My Lord"
I thought I'd take a walk today
It's a mistake I sometimes make
My children lay asleep in bed
My wife lay wide-awake
I kissed her softly on the brow
I tried not to make a sound
But with stony eyes she looked at me
And gently squeezed my hand
Call it a premonition, call it a crazy vision
Call it intuition, something learned from mother
But when she looked up at me, I could clearly see
The Sword of Damocles hanging directly above her
Oh Lord Oh my Lord
Oh Lord
How have I offended thee?
Wrap your tender arms around me
Oh Lord Oh Lord
Oh My Lord
They called at me through the fence
They were not making any sense
They claimed that I had lost the plot
Kept saying that I was not
The man I used to be
They held their babes aloft
Threw marsh mellows at the Security
And said that I'd grown soft
Call it intuition, call it a creeping suspicion,
But their words of derision meant they hardly knew me
For even I could see in the way they stared at me
The Spear of Destiny sticking right through me
Oh Lord Oh my lord
Oh Lord
How have I offended thee?
Wrap your tender arms round me
Oh Lord Oh lord
Oh My Lord
Now I'm at the hairdressers
People watch me as they move past
A guy wearing plastic antlers
Presses his bum against the glass
Now I'm down on my hands and knees
And it's so fucking hot!
Someone cries, "What are you looking for?"
I scream, "The plot, the plot!"
I grab my telephone, I call my wife at home
She screams, "Leave us alone!" I say, "Hey, it's only me"
The hairdresser with his scissors, he holds up the mirror
I look back and shiver; I can't even believe what I can see
Be mindful of the prayers you send
Pray hard but pray with care
For the tears that you are crying now
Are just your answered prayers
The ladders of life that we scale merrily
Move mysteriously around
So that when you think you're climbing up, man
In fact you're climbing down
Into the hollows of glamour, where with spikes and hammer
With telescopic camera, they chose to turn the screw
Oh I hate them, Ma! Oh I hate them, Pa!
Oh I hate them all for what they went and done to you
Oh Lord Oh my Lord
Oh Lord
How have I offended thee?
Wrap your tender arms round me
Oh Lord Oh Lord
Oh My Lord
Beast!!! Fantastic!!
0.49 on the right of the screen there younger nick cave )
ferocious, indeed!
This is a great thriller movie merged in music
It really is... I bought it on a whim and was forever after a Nick Cave fan.
Astonishing! 100% cathartic...

Yup.
That staccato bit at the end is great! Now I'm going to have to re-listen to the studio version to see if it's there. For some reason I don't remember it.
Saw him live a couple a weeks ago. He was great as always. Some one gave him a carrot... Yerh, he was not to cray about that man..
Which concert is this from?
I think that one is in Paris..
hello... "Live in Paris .." ok...

@labowu Yes, my friend, but more due to David Eugene Edwards & his former band 16 Horsepower. Don't get me wrong, I like Cave as well, but not particulary fond of his voice, that's all :)
got my ticket today...can't wait!
@MrExorcist7 Cause God freakin' rules!
well danzig had done thirteen before giving it to cash...so maybe i give you a hint too... "a lie for a lie and a truth for a truth"...cave 's been there as well
True That!
Relax, the hipster thing is just another fad it will die off like so many others before it. Good point though!
This looks like a London show that I may have attended with Jim White & Warren Ellis. What's it taken from?
I like to think of Nick Cave as "The Thinking Man's Jim Morrison".
What the hell is Joaquin Phoenix doing on stage
HEAVY Me likes! :)
If you relate strongly to this song then no doctor can can save you. See you in Bedlam.
Lots of people misinterpret the religious imagery in Nick's material. This song is a clever play on words - he's saying "oh my lord" in exasperation, but on the surface it sounds like a straight religious song. This LP was Nick's last really amazing album with the Bad Seeds... at least so far.
no
scary!
