    Hitchens didn't show up to make people comfortable. He was a powerhouse of learned cognitive reason with more knowledge of high class literature of all ages than all the world leaders combined. I know I'll never be able thank him personally for how he's improved my life now.

      I'm pretty sure he has changed his mind now that he has gone to his second death. Right now he's in a place of torment because he chose to die in his sins. In a little over 1007 years from now he will be pushed off the cliff into the lake of fire. We are in the last days before the rapture of those that trusted in Jesus death as payment for their sins. Then God will poor out His wrath on a Christ rejecting world. He will send a strong delusion a society that rejects truth in order that they might be dammed. It's your choice. With God? Or sent to hell? Get a bible you'll need it after the rapture. God is not a liar like us sinful people are. I too was an atheist.

      MegaHOCKEY09 I agree Christopher Hitchens mind has changed into worm food like yours will be the moment your brain dies. Your superstition is not impressive to millions of people living in this modern world. The bible adds nothing to this information age but more fools selling the same old outdated stories as truth to be taken seriously. I judge you as a silly person that is easily brain washed to ignore evidence refuting biblical claims.

      The pacifist thread is strong in this audience, rightly so. Hitchens is annoyed at having to wake them up to the greater threat of messianic faith war upon freedom to think otherwise (which is only available in mature democracies). Hitchens, and everyone else, knows that it would be lovely, and preferable, if the combative faithful could be peacefully persuaded to recognise the advantages of free thought and equality for women. He has studied the issue far deeper & better than the audience, as his lecture shows, and is warning them that it is not going to happen that way. Their freedom to be a pacifist is under threat and he is suggesting they have to decide what the uncomfortable priority is.
      As you indicate, the discomfit in the audience, of facing this choice between the impossible and the unpalatable, is palpable!

    • @Gilstero
      @Gilstero 3 года назад +1

      @@philcawser Very good point & one I had overlooked. The truth can be painful. Sadly in the 14 years since he spoke here, the freedom that allows for pacifism & free thinking is under greater threat than ever. Sadder still is the biggest of these threats comes from within the very land that Christopher tied his colours to. We live in strange times.

I won't say he was wrong about Hillary Clinton, he knew far more about her than I will ever care to. But I'm going to look into what issues he had with Barack Obama, he usually turns out to be right. Apart from the charisma and intelligence one might find in any halfway-decent politician, Obama did turn out to be a good, capable president - not the fighting champion of unions, minorities, the poor and middle-class that we truly needed, but on the whole he did more good than harm. But if you mean 2011, it's easy to look back now and say he should have done more, but that wasn't immediately obvious to our leaders or to our allies.
      Look at the reaction from Americans over the last few days when Biden bombed a few specific, retaliatory targets - it's being seen as a betrayal by a huge number of Democrats and as not aggressive enough by Republicans.
      Here's what WAS done during Obama's years, according to Wikipedia:
      "Shortly after the civil war broke out in 2011, the U.S. initially supplied the rebels of the Free Syrian Army with non-lethal aid (e.g. food rations and pickup trucks), but quickly began providing training, money, and intelligence to selected Syrian rebel commanders. At least two U.S. programs attempted to assist the Syrian rebels, including a 2014 Pentagon program that planned to train and equip 15,000 rebels to fight ISIL, which was canceled in 2015 after spending $500 million and producing only a few dozen fighters.[142] A simultaneous $1 billion covert program called Timber Sycamore ran by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was more successful, but was decimated by Russian bombing, AND CANCELED IN MID-2017 BY THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.[142] The Obama administration began surveillance missions on Islamic State positions in Syria in September 2014.[143] On 22 September 2014, the U.S., Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) began to attack ISIL forces inside Syria,[18][144] as well as the Khorasan group in the Idlib Governorate west of Aleppo, and the al-Nusra Front around Raqqa,[24][145] as part of the international military intervention against ISIL. By late 2015, coalition planes were dropping or launching an average of 67 bombs or missiles a day.[146]"
      (capitals are mine)
      Does this answer your question? While I agree that abandoning the Kurds was shameful, what more do you think should have been done, or was politically possible at the time? Certainly Obama's record on the Kurds is better than Trump's - in 2019, he completely abandoned them and it appears he didn't even understand who they were!

    Can’t help but wish they’d hit up Randy Newman and have him play his song Gods Song (That Why I Love Mankind) those songs at the beginning sounded like they were forced to write those songs.

      Religion is a derivative of narcissism. Religion is manmade, fiction and a Ponzi scheme. When people stop: obeying, enrolling, teaching, learning, participating, promoting, supporting and funding religion; religion will cease to exist.

    Many atheists (me included) are on the defensive because we grew up in Christianity. I do envy those who were born into non-believing families.

    Sometimes the "rude" option is the correct one. It was hitches that saved me from a lifetime of self induced slavery. Say what you want about him, but at least criticize the real points. The iraq war and women's rights would actually be valid things to call him on, but not that he's "rude." The man was eloquent as fuck, and I could listen to him describe corn for half an hour.

    A similar crowd to the 2002 Mario Savio Memorial Lecture audience, and a fine example of the how many within the far left/anti-war movement are holding open the gates for the barbarians to take the city...
