I have been to Chembai concerts in the sixties and early seventies. Palghat Mani Iyer was briefly our tenant and had gifted me a silver set for my first birthday, something I still have. And Chowdiah was known for his seven stringed violin - he plays a regular violin here.
I saw this and it is from 'vani' a Kannada film of 1930s produced by Vidwan Chowdaiah. Those days there were no loudspeakers or mikes. Vocalists had to sing at very high pitch continuously.
It is a treasure.I heard Chembai at car street Udupi .It was in front of Kaniyur Mutt in January 1966 or1968.It was a great concert. He presented Hamsadwani for nearly two hours.. Thanks for sharing
This clipping is from the movie "VANI" produced by the violin great Chowdaiah garu about seven decades ago! The movie was a great flop and made great losses to him who was forced to sell his costly car and other things to cover the debt! "Everyone will buy costly cars after producing a movie whereas in my case it is exactly the reverse"! lamented Chowdaiah! Chembai was dead against seeing or acting in movies as was the custom of orthodox brahmins of those days! nevertheless The great Chowdaiah somehow convinced his friend to act as "performing a concert"!
@@raghunandanms17there was no guru shishya relationship. Yesudas sang a few concerts with him for a few years at the former request. That is all. Chembai's only real disciples were the twins Jaya and Vijaya.
@@user-xyz766-aBclmpqThat's right. After the death of Chembai, Yesudas told that he was not the Shishya of Chembai. It was an arrangement for mutual benefit
After the death of Chembai, Yesudas told this to the News Channel that he was not the Shishya of Chembai. But it was a mutually beneficial arrangement for both of them

wow lucky to hear this. Never have seen Chowdiah in any form before. Seems like a great violinist
He has 7 strings instead of 4 in the violin in the later years.
This rendition of Simhendra Madhyamam is simply out of the world
Is it? I thought it was Shanmukhapriya. Sounds like small nishadam.
