How to Train Your Dog to “LEAVE IT” so that it works in the REAL WORLD. In my opinion as a professional force free dog trainer, “leave it” is one of the most important cues you can teach your dog. Leave it means “don’t go for that thing I KNOW you’re interested in!”. Leave it can be a lifesaving cue since it can prevent your dog from chasing or eating something dangerous to them.
This video will show you how to train leave it so that it works on food, animals, or anything else your dog might be interested in!

Thank you for your valuable help. Evie and I are working on this first, and then progressing to not chasing urban wildlife! Your training echoes the group class I took 20 years ago at the SFSPCA - not now offered, but hopefully will again be soon. Marker word, step-wise training and timing were all emphasized, as you do. training with food on the table seems like a game changer! I've been teaching leave it to my dog only on the floor, and she keeps trying to steal things from tables and counters... can't wait to try this out!
Generalizing the skill on different surfaces is SO helpful!! 👌I'm going to be uploading another video soon about counter surfing that might interest you too. It's with the same dog, but showing how I teach her to stop stealing food from counters WITHOUT me needing to cue her to "leave it" or when I'm not in the room! More advanced version 🙂
I’ve been binging your videos and read through the “Dog Prey Drive…” ebook and want to dive right into it.
We’ve got a very solid marker word so I’m going to begin with “leave it” since this seems like an important tool for tackling reactivity and prey drive.
My question is this. What value of treats/food do you use for “leave it”?.

I typically divide “dog treats” into three value categories:
1) Low value: kibble, fruit/vegetable dog treats (example blueberry treats), milk bones, etc
2) High value: freeze-dried beef liver, single ingredient/pure meat dog treats, soft & stinky dog treats, etc
3) Very high value: cheese cubes, boiled & shredded chicken, ground beef, roasted pork chop, etc
For teaching the "leave it" cue in THIS video, I use category 2 treats as rewards typically. However when I first start using the cue for prey drive I use level 3 (then phase down to level 2 treats once the skill is more solid). Hope that helps!
For the Impulse control part, should the dog start form the Seat position?
For the un-cued impulse control or cued in-hand exercises, sitting isn't necessary! (Kiki just auto sits). I do find it helps to ask your dog to sit prior to starting the on-the-floor version though when they're first learning!
My dog will pick it up very easily while training (i can set the treat on her paw or leave the room for a little even) but if we are outside or she knows we arent training and distracted, she will steal food or not stop smelling or trying to eat something from the ground. Any tips for a case like this?

First of all, I'm using a translator because I'm not used to using English. Please understand even if the sentence is weird.
My dog has a strong PREY DRIVE. I wanted to lower his excitement in the mountains, so I looked up several sites and saw your RUclips.
My dog has perfect loose leash walking in the city center. However, there are many difficulties in the mountains because of the prey drive. He is distracted and has a lot of pulling because he is tracking the smell of small animals. Even though most of the time, no other animal is actually right in front of his eyes. I stop immediately when he pulls the rope, then when he returns, I'm repeatedly rewarding him with a palatable treat and then starting again, but it doesn't work in the mountains.
Will LEAVE IT training work in this case as well? I'll try even if it doesn't work, but can you tell me if there's any other better way?
Also, do you use the same snack in both hands when attaching the CUE? Or does he practice snacks that he doesn't get using less palatable ones?
Hi! First I want to reassure you that the translation was great, so your question is easy to understand.
Yes, if most of the time it’s simply smells rather than actually seeing an animal, the “leave it” cue should work great! I’m actually in the process of creating two more advanced versions of this too. One where I should how to train “leave it” so it works great on walks/real life too, and then another showing how I used it as a starter cue in training my dogs prey drive. My dog used to want to chase EVERYTHING that moved 😂 Stay tuned for the more advanced versions! However, your dog will still need to be solid on the beginner cue, so I’d start training what you see in this video!
For training “leave it” you can use the same treats, but your dog will learn the cue faster if the one they’re “leaving” is less palatable than the reward.
I have a question, can you train a puppy like this? Like 3-6 months old?
Absolutely! I’ve actually filmed a leave it tutorial with a ~2 month old puppy named Bosa (just haven’t edited and uploaded it yet). Puppies can definitely learn leave it 😊
my dog has decided playing tug with my hand is the way to go for the first step and when i leave the room he barks at me and bites my ankles on the way out 🙃
How old is your dog? Sounds like he might be trying to turn it into either a play session OR developing a demand behaviour!
@@happyhoundsdogtraining he's 15 weeks old, we got him from the shelter a couple weeks ago and he was timid at first but has definitely let loose now (especially with my fiancee)
we are a bit worried we might be in over our heads but obedience classes dont open for another 6 weeks near us 😬

If step 2 is leave it, why spend the time on step one where she gets the treat - sorry, am I being dumb because I just can't see the reason for step one
I don't think any questions are dumb! 🙂 The reason I like starting with step 1 (un-cued) is for building a little impulse control. I find this particularly helpful in households with kids (that often have snacks in hand) or if you have a dog that takes treats roughly. It teaches the dog that without any cueing or needing to be told to leave it alone, the food in the humans hand isn't automatically theirs. Whenever possible I like teaching some good default behaviours! That said, you can absolutely skip it if you prefer just starting with cueing 😊
