Not just Bethesda. In the last year, most studios have been puting the blame on the gamers for any bad sale numbers. One of those studio that didn't do that was CDPR with Cyberpunk. They took 2 years and almost reprogrammed the whole game to finally make it a success. It may be the last good game they will ever do but nevertheless, this is how you're supposed to react when your customers tell you 'its not good".

There is no problem with Bethesda formula of "open world full of interesting content". Starfield failed because it doesn't employ it. And the first signs of the problems was... the Radiant Quest system which procedurally made repetitive, boring fetch quests. Sounds familiar?

      @thesaltofyourtears2155 Месяц назад +3

It's not even a question of open world, in truth it's secondary.
It's simply that Bethesda doesn't want to make RPGs anymore.
THE primary strength of the Elder Scrolls was the progression system and the ultra sandbox and permissive builds, hence the great love of players towards Morrowind which offered the most stupid and fun builds (even if Oblivion goes even further since the NPCs live and move unlike those of Morrowind allowing to try even cooler builds).
you can do a full village build and never leave a village and still be max level.
that was the strength of the Elder Scrolls.

The higher ups cannot be criticised and then the rule of "shite only goes downhill" applies. As such, You are stuck with incompetent fools at the top, bootlickers under them (which is 50/50 - either useless yesmen, or competent people without spine to stand up to BS) and then it all falls on You and Your colleagues at the bottom. I have it in my current job, the lab director is an economist who previously worked in automotive, the lab manager is not pushing him to any direction and we are stuck with being understaffed/too many samples (average wait time to complete the analysis went up from 2 weeks to 1.5 months in several departments - HPLC dep where I work had 2 months delay, we were working overtimes for 4 months straight to lower it to 1 week delay), half of the equipment is not GLP suitable anymore due to lack of internal investment (just today, 2 pressure valves under 450 bar pressure went flying across the lab, one is about 1.5k $) while company is not making profit. The bussiness is literally under the fire.
The same is usually present and can be seen in those firms, just from overall chaos, dev vs management statements, strikes, botched releases, crunch, leaks, etc. The only difference that I have observed is that they are usually overstaffed in management.

Honestly, this is likely because they know the game is a flop. The best strategy is to invest as little time into it while trying to drive up as much profit as they can. Hence Shattered Space.
In my opinion, Shattered Space and the Bounty Hunting Creators Club mod all should've been FREE updates. Nobody mentions how it took them a YEAR to add a simple rover, too.
They think they've done nothing wrong and so will continue to pull this. We saw the red flags with F04 and definitely 76. Have no idea why anyone suspected Starfield to be any better.
Updates will stop in another year, I guarantee it. Bethesda will be lucky if they don't get bought out or have massive lay-offs come Elder Scrolls 6. A game nearly two years out still. To make no mention of the modding community, not even the modding community wants to touch or fix this game.
Which is a HUGE problem for Bethesda because that's literally the only reason people buy their games. Is so they can mod them.

A decade ago there were two studios whom I trusted so much I'd happily buy any of their games, sight unseen; Bethesda and Bioware. Cd project red actively made sure no one of their reviewers whould reveal how broken Cyberpunk was before launch.
So how can you trust cd project red out all companies? This isint even counting in the massive lie they got caught in recently about not hireing on DEI practices wich their own website disproved.

    • @arkhamcreed4326
      @arkhamcreed4326 2 месяца назад

@@draw2death421 I trust their development team, not their marketing team. Plus there are two things to consider here:
First and foremost is that they fixed Cyberpunk. With so many other broken games coming out and being abandoned it was refreshing to see a team actually put the work in to make their game what people wanted, and they did it for free. CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077 deserve every single ounce of praise people have given to No Man's Sky and its developer because its basically the exact same situation, only Cyberpunk was fixed in a year, not five years.
Secondly, and this is the one that fans hate to admit, CD never lied about Cyberpunk. Yes review copies were staggered out in shady ways, and yes the trailers didn't show the real state of last gen versions of the game, but not one promised feature was cut from the game. The issue was a lot of people were under the impression that they had been promised more than they actually were. Short version of that is that a Polish language interview was made, and promptly misquoted. Then the misquote was mistranslated. Then that mistranslated misquote was posted on Reddit and all the American gaming news sites started misquoting the mistranslated misquote without fact checking it or going back to the original source. In a nut shell "they never said that."

Agreed. They spent thousands of hours working on the procedural generation back end ... and then just gave it a small handful of set pieces to work with. They didn't even give it any real variation of the set pieces, so once you've been to an abandoned listening post you've been to *ALL* the abandoned listening posts. Having randomized loot lying on a table or having it filled with spacers instead of pirates does almost nothing to count for a perceived variation of the set piece. Even the one with the artifact just has a cave pasted on to a hallway. The rest of it's the same. The real issue is we, as gamers, ate to blame. Yeah, we complain and piss and moan. But we keep pre-ordering. We keep accepting games with bugs in them. The fact that you said "we all know games ate going to have bugs in them" just goes to show how much we have been groomed to put up with. I've been gaming for 40 years. I've watched the decline of the gaming industry in general.
The first thing that started all this was the bean counters, the finance people, realized how much money there was to be made. But those people have a different business model than the original gaming industry. They're not willing g to wait 7 or 8 years for a game that might make 100 million dollars. They want a steady revenue stream. That's one of the reasons we have buggy games, microtransactions, and "horse armor."
They've used hype marketing to get gamers to give them money before they even finish a game.
If gamers as a whole would just stop pre-ordering games and stop buying them before there are some game reviews. All of these bad actors would disappear.
I know what people will say, well we wouldn't get all these games if we did that. That's just plain cope. They'd make BETTER games because they know there's money to be made and if they have to invest for 5 or 6 years and pay game devs good money and hire enough devs to make it happen, then they would. But they know they don't have to because gamers will put up with their crap.
I remember a time when if a company did not release review copies of their game. No one would buy it. Now they run some cool cgi movies, and gamers start drooling.
It really falls on all of us for letting them do this to us. The game companies don't care. Even starfield made them money, lots of money and is continuing to make them Okey thru MTs.
STOP PRE-ORDERING, STOP BUYING GAMES UNTIL THEY'RE REVIEWED.
If we all really did that game companies would start making good games again. No matter how many excuses you come up with, that is the real truth.

I wanted to agree with you but I don't. I think people DO want more Skyrim and more Fallout "replays." The formula DOES work, but they've broken away from the formula with fallout 76 and starfield with online and procedurally generated content. If Starfield was HUGE, SPACE Skyrim, it would have been a bombshell. I'd have bought it, but review after review complaining about the lack of meaningful exploration, the same cookie cutter NPCs and quests planet after planet, made it sound like they're running into the same issues as No Man's Sky to a worse extent, seeing as NMS has been spending the last 10 years making procedural generation work for them. If starfield was handcrafted, it would have followed the formula and WOULD have worked. They are not following their formula, and are doubling down on the consumer being the problem. They very much need to GO BACK to what works.

when i think back to what made skyrim so great it was getting lost. it was finding a cave on the way to my quest objective and exploring it, then 2 minutes later finding a fort and exploring it. taking 2 hours to get to a quest objective that should’ve taken 5 minutes. that’s what made skyrim so great to me. and i went into starfield expecting that, and i really didn’t get it at all. instead it took 3 different loading screens to get to my quest objective, finding nothing of interest on the way, and immediately going through another 3 loading screens to get to the next one. that is what killed starfield for me, and what makes modding it such a waste of time. honestly, as long as elder scrolls 6 has one big open world with plenty of handmade unique locations, it will already leagues better than starfield.

If you want to understand why Bethesda games are getting worse, one very important reason is: look at who are no longer there. Starfield shows an utter lack of creativity. It’s just repackaged animations and mechanics. Compare TES where you could play as a multitude races to Starfield where it’s just humans. It’s empty and shallow, and I have no confidence that TES6 will return to the fun and enjoyment of Skyrim, even with mods.

That makes no sense. The larger your game, the _more_ you must embrace the idea that no individual player will experience all of the content, at least not within a single playthrough.
An immersive, emergent open-world game should be designed such that the average player experiences only a minority of the content in a single playthrough, and that the majority of people who play the game will never experience all of it.

The best thing Bethesda could do for the next Elder Scrolls title is going back and reviewing (playing the games and talking with the fan base) everything that worked well from Morrowind - Skyrim. What quest lines were the most memorable, what mechanics were more fleshed out then the others, which game worlds had more to explore and ways to explore, etc. Take pieces of what made the previous titles so immersive and start from there, try to build on them but don't make them trivial. Here are some examples:
    - Layered clothing and armor from Morrowind, lets players have different combinations for looks and scenarios. Also bring back being able to wear more than 1 ring.
    - Spell making, being able to create some amazing / game breaking spells.
    - Equipment wear and tear, item degradation makes sense and it's immersive. One moment your gear is solid and a few hours later you could be in a dungeon and your weapon breaks. Kept me on my toes.
    - Bring back Oblivion's lock picking mini game, that one was more interactive and immersive than Morrowind's or Skyrim's. Also bring back Morrowind's magically trapped doors or chests. That could be another Oblivion-like mini game.
    - Keep Skyrim's black smithing but possibly add in Fallout 4's weapon modding mechanics. If not for weapon changing effects it could be for weapon altered appearance.
    - Take a page from Fallout New Vegas, if weapons and armor found is unique.... make them look AND function uniquely.
    - Make ALL Factions mentioned or dealt with in game joinable and give them a story quest line or radiant quests. Make them have rival faction altercations / combat. (e.g. Blackwood Company, Mythic Dawn, Order of the Black Worm, Silver Hand, etc.)
    - Don't try and shoehorn real world politics or ideologies into the game.
I have way more examples but you get the picture. They have so much they can reuse and improve with, they don't need to reinvent the wheel here. They just need to listen to the fans and go against what the corpo share holders want to force them to do. Fight to make something great and not just take the easy path to push out another F76 / Starfield turd for a quick buck. Also, stop this nonsense with micro-dlc transactions in a SINGLE PLAYER GAME....

A big reason for them to not change engines in the robustness of its mod-ability. Mods absolutely sell Bethesda games and keep them relevant for many years, they don't wanna mess that up.
Where Starfield falls short is it's setting. Skyrim and Fallout can get away with being buggy and boring because the world they're set in is awesome, and mods will make them not boring/broken. Nobody cares about a space faction snoozefest since there's a ton of better space games. But there aren't many other open world medieval fantasy/post-apocalyptic games on the market.
That's also why FO76 was inherently flawed. You can't heavily mod online games without private servers, which'll act as a barrier to entry when each server has different modlists and fragments the playerbase
