  • Today, we're going to take a look at a very tacticool knife that takes ProTech's well-proven TR-5 pattern, and turns it into an assisted knife, putting it into the hands of many folks who can't carry autos.

    Kudos to Matthew Lerch for designing an assist feature that is superior to Kershaw's Speed Safe designed by Hall of Fame Designer Ken Onion. The Speed Safe spring is loose and is held somewhat by grease to the scale wall. The aim of both designs is to to have an amount of blade travel before the assist kicks in. No one wants a hair trigger blade sprung open in their pocket. Both designs achieve this making knives more palatable to the masses. Great review of one of my favorite design lines Nick. 🙏🏼

    While the TR-5 probably isn’t a design I’m going to rush out and try to find, I agree that it’s exciting to see them do more knives that are accessible to those of us that live in dumb law states. I do kinda hope they focus more on the manual ones but I’m ok with a quality assisted knife here and there.

    I just got this knife and few days ago and love it. It has a great mechanisms and offers a lot of user engagement and attention. I like the manual dexterity required as I prefer flippers and thumb studs launchers, etc. over auto mechs. I like fidgeting with my knives, (age old ADHD). I can carry autos, but prefer not to. On the downer the clip looks to hang too low and may bend when using ice braker feature, some hot spots at thumb stud and back spacer where lanyard loop is. Go Knife Rites and AKTI, too many laws are not based in reality, and many antique laws need to be abolished.... "prunes?! LMAO!!

    Knife laws are dumb. I'm glad that they're making a version of this one for people who otherwise couldn't carry it. Unfortunately, some states have cracked down on assisted knives as well. At least in NY, we have the "I was fishing" excuse.

      @@theknifeconnection9571 I meant for automatics, not assisted. I should have been more clear. In areas of NY that aren't NYC, there is a sporting exemption that allows carrying automatic knives while hunting or fishing. There is also an exemption for public safety (police, fire, EMS).

      Well this has slight blade play he couldn't get rid of. And idc what kind of knife it is. Side to side blade play is unexeptable at this price. Sometimes axis locks can have a little but you can easily fix it by having slightly stiff action. But I have like 5 Benchmade and after breakin they will all drop when unlocked with no play.

    • @Sleepy_spartan717
      @Sleepy_spartan717 2 года назад +1

      You can’t even compare the two. The leek is a very weak spring so it doesn’t take much. There aren’t any autos/assisted knives that fire like protech. That’s exactly why people, and I, love what this company puts out

      @@Sleepy_spartan717 Hmmm I have both the Leek and the Protech Newport. Opening wise yes the Protech is much harder but I’m talking about closing. As far as my experience goes, the force they require to close are not that different. So I’m curious how this assisted TR5 performs. Honestly, I don’t want it to be more difficult to close than a Leek.

    Assisted is just a way to get around a good detent and should be priced as such (around $70). I'm sure most of us would have loooooved a folder with a good detent. It seems out of touch, Protech .

    • @DEVGRUnotST6

      Assisted is really a way around automatic laws. Pro-Tech, being almost entirely focused on automatics, would of course try to implement their trademark work in a non-auto. I think that you'd be correct most of the time, and it's a lazy way of making a knife, but it's hardly fair to pin on that on Pro-Tech.

    I think anyone carrying this in a no-auto jurisdiction would really be pushing their luck. It's a knife made by a switchblade company, with a button in the same place where a switchblade button would be, and a blade that opens via a compressed spring. If you need to show a cop an engineering diagram to explain how you're not breaking the law, you're already having a bad time.
