  • In 1983 Will Gaines invited Honi Coles and Chuck Green to London for a "Masters of Tap" workshop. These are excerpts from the show. Honi talks about tap history and demonstrates various styles. Chuck dances to "Lady Be Good" (05:24) and Will goes into a bebop solo (10:30).

I saw Will Gaines a couple of times at Southill Park. He was a great all round entertainer; jokes and story telling as well as the tap.

Had the honor in the 80s as a kid to have a guest workshop by Honi (r.i.p.) at Phil Black (r.i.p.) Dance studio on 50th & broadway; changed my ears, dance, & life. Chuck (r.i.p.) will always be in the heart, because I have too many stories with him at FAZIL'S (times circle square studios) in NYC where he did privates, & was a delight to be around.

@@TraciMann full power of LOVE (peace, grace, mercy, forgiveness, grace, mercy, discipline, honesty, & courage to stand up to to oppressors/oppressions) back to you. Yes, fazils was a great place, hosted by a great HUMAN family.....sharing steps is HUMAN, & it's only due to the unnatural ways of COLONization (spelled that way for an OBVIOUS reason) that makes sharing into "stealing", because of the "need of money" to pay for something; that we naturally didn't have to pay for at one time (as animals and other things on land don't pay a utility bill/rent/mortgages).
But, glad you enjoyed them, & hopefully made variations of those steps & evolved them 😊.

@@BrianFootwork well now that I'm turning 62, I'm outpouring all I know into the next generation - not looking for money as much as young artists with sharp minds, skillful technique and a passion for the historical steps and styles I pass on. As for me? I'm still creating rhythms and performance routines and I know you are too! :) I love your philosophy on all of it too - very cool indeed!!!

The only class I had w Honi was at Woodpeckers Studio. He had suffered a stroke and could barely walk, so he had them play a video of himself performing and he pieced a new choreo. Based on that. It was a huge lesson on the importance of everything I was experiencing! Phil Black was awesome too!!!

Chuck was my tap teacher! I loved him so much! We toured the NYC public school system and put on assembly programs for them. I also took class from Honi, but he had a stroke and taught by video and an assistant, Barbara Duffy. It was sad to see Honi diss Chaney onstage but they definitely had a rivalry going for decades....mostly on Honi's part. BTW Chaney had some brilliant rhythms too

That looks like Dave Green on bass; still a very in demand jazz bassist, playing with the very best mainstream jazz musicians in the UK and the USA age 81 in March 2023. The drummer and pianist look familiar but I can't place them 40 years on.
