You guys should do a video on how to escape with kids in the car.
IRRESPONSIBLE! But again their are those parents who willfully lock their kids/babies in a car at 120 degrees to go do their nails, hair or shop.....
agreed. I just commented that.
@@nugentthomas2371 what's irresponsible about getting trapped in a flash flood with kids???

Are you saying this can never happen if you're a responsible parent? What if you're travelling with your kids to reach higher ground but got caught in a sudden flash flood?
Matt Gutman did a excellent job demonstrating how to save yourself in a vehicle during a flood. Thank you sir.
Aww poo

What a terrible thing to experience! My parents live in New Jersey, but other than some flooding in the house, they are thankfully okay. Praying for everyone that is dealing with this disaster. ❤️ 🙏
How on earth is Queens, New Jersey, et cetera even possible to be flooded? This is crazy. Mean while Manhattan has no stories of flooding. The levels that they are must be so different.

and some of you maybe like "why you and your sister went to the pool when you know you can't swim?" well my mom said we could go by the pool if we put our legs in the water or if we stand by the stairs holding the rails so i did that but my sister grabbed my arm and pulled me deeper into the water and we both drowned luckily the teacher got us though.. im gonna be really scared driving pass the rivers and stuff cause my fear is getting stuck in the pond inside my car which is why im watching this video

I never understood the thought people have seeing the high water ahead and they proceed to think their vehicle is also a boat!
Two words “flash flood”. You can literally get trapped while driving a dry road. It takes minutes to get overflowing with water
@@brittanyd3173 This I know, I’m not referring to those moments!
Because it seems that a lot people in this country don't have ability to see truth even when it's right in front of them.
s u b m a r i n e
I suppose what happens in these cases is that people think to themselves that it doesn't seem that deep and that their car can make it. Of course, water sometimes doesn't seem to be very deep and can be really deceptive especially if you are driving at highway speeds and there are no visual markers or warning signs like other cars in the water. All of a sudden it could be nine inches deep when you thought it was only one inch deep. Then again you probably shouldn't be driving the day after a severe downpour like Ida was and you should definitely stay up to date on the towns and areas situations before driving. That way you can see how bad it is in that area and decide if it seems safe to travel through. Doing this could also allow you the opportunity to figure out alternative routes to take if you must drive.
It always helps to roll down your window if you can before you drive into the water if you can.

Women PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave your purse!! You need both hands free and you definitely do not need your purse to catch on something and take you under. Best thing to do is it's raining, etc is BEFORE you start your cat, put your driver's license, cc in a pocket, jeans, or my favorite in your bra:) Your purse is not worth dying for. Also buy an emergency escape tool, Lowe's home Depot, website, etc and keep it in secured in your console/ glove box!!!!! Take your coat, jacket off before you LEAVE the roof of your car and go into the water feet first!!!! Feet first does work- I speak from experience!!!! Turn Around Don't Drown!! Better to get home late, sleep in your car in a safe area etc than drown and have your family bury you.

"Roll down the window?" Most (not all of course) are powered windows these days so focus in on the head rest window smash. Great video!
That's exactly what crossed my mind. I made similar comment. Thumbs up!
Well, it's not like your car will be submerged underwater instantaneously. You'll have time to react. Also, power windows don't short immediately when submerged, so you'll have extra time to roll your windows down. If you can't press a button within that timeframe, perhaps you were meant to die.
Summary: 1. Wear a life jacket underneath your clothes 2. Know how to swim.
3. Single with no kids on your car

Matt, you are our champion. Congratulations! Fear is not a factor for you.
I’m pretty sure the average person couldn’t get on top of the car in this situation.
Average American, you mean.
Hello Marian
Yes they should be able to. We have something in us called adrenaline that usually kicks in during times of “excitement”. When your in a situation where it’s fight-or-flight, your body will release a sudden bolt of energy and strength (adrenaline) so you can save yourself. And the water can be used to your advantage because your actually lighter in water & should be able to pull yourself out.
Or you can sit there and waste precious seconds saying “I cAnT gEt oN tOp oF mY cAr” and drown in your car without trying to save yourself, especially if you’re alone 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
@@rachaelnwaoha3543 yes but what if you are already underwater. how do you open the window in that case and how would you get on top if you keep sinking ?
@@bobby6569 at that point you break the glass like the reporter said. With the top of the seat, even your foot heel when you get out your seatbelt. Not every situation is going to be the same, but the car isn’t going to fill up with water right away. There’s going to be an air pocket for a short time so that time should be used wisely to get out. The main point is that you have to get yourself out of the car. With reason and rationale, instead of giving up and possibly dying a horrible death by drowning in your own car
This is needed information.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

This is why I have some life vests just in case. I can swim but not floating on my back. Sadly it isn't that easy to just swim in these cases. It's totally waaay different to be swimming/escaping out of a car in calm waters than ones with a current. And pray that there is no electricity, or else you'll have to watch out for fallen power lines or poles that can shock you once you try to grab on to them to stop moving.
Maria M, Omg! Thank you.
@leshelly21 Totally agree. They truly are fundamental. Sadly, most places only focus more on techniques than survival. I'm really interested in safe open water swimming lessons nowadays. I wrote my comment since some people can't take swimming lessons because they have too much in their schedules or for xyz reasons. I consider myself a decent swimmer but if something like this happens and I have time, I will surely grab my life jacket😅some people are overconfident in their abilities but nature doesn't care, we can't control it. Watching an athletic young man escape you can easily see how the elderly couldn't possibly make it. Also, Laminated glass (shatterproof) in the newer cars is nearly impossible to break.
They sell window breaker/seatbelt cutter keychains on Amazon
@@c.2538 The 'newer vehicles have laminated glass' vs tempered glass - which is two layers of glass fused to an inner plastic layer. In an accident the laminated glass keeps passengers from being ejected but at the same time makes the window highly resistant to a window breaker if trying to escape a sinking vehicle. If you take notice they deceivingly use an 'older model' with tempered glass to show effectiveness of window breaking - escape. :( Rear windows may have breakable 'tempered glass' confirm by identifiable sticker in the lower corner of windows.

I grew up in the Philippines. Local drivers would not even gamble driving around flooded areas that would risk their cars and life unless it's highly important, but that's very rare.

Problem! Most new cars windows don’t open once the car is turned off. So if the engine stalls the windows won’t roll down and you are trapped. Very important to open the windows before the engine stalls!

Please make a video with Power windows which don't have anything manual to open with..
That was awesome
Hello Erins
I appreciate the advice, but I see three problems here: 1) Most cars have power windows that may not work while attempting to roll them down with rising, rushing water. 2) Everyone can't swim and diving in the water will not work. 3) Experiencing this in a night situation is totally different, if visibility is limited or no one is around. Sounds good in theory but awful if these three qualifications don't exist.
Power windows should automatically go down. I think vehicles 2002 and younger have that safety feature.
Should have use an Electric window car. 80% cars now have electric windows.
Exactly what I was thinking

this is so scary, these storms are getting really bad.
In other words, you have to be fit to do this and keep a life jacket in the car. For real, good reminders to break the window b/c so many are used to power buttons. And if they don't work after being flooded out, they will panic and drown inside of a floating car. So scary that even NYC got to get real in thinking about this during climate change.
You might get wet, but roll the window down before you lose power. Don't need to waste time trying to break the window.
