My mother used to tell me to sit on my hands when in public because talking with my hands embarrassed her. It got worse when I started attending sign language classes. Sadly, I had no time to learn it and I had to drop out. Now I don't have the time and opportunity. It would be difficult anyway because my knowledge of the local language is inadequate except for the most basic conversation.

I'm scheduled to teach at a summer school for a few weeks, and my mind is preoccupied with crochet: I possess an abundance of yarn, some hooks from an Aldi event, and several metal hooks, sizes 3-4, acquired from magazines and Poundland. I anticipate a small attendance, so my current hook sizes might suffice. The students will range from grade 1 to secondary school age, and I must presume they have no prior knowledge of crochet or knitting. Given the brief two-week period, I aim to teach only the basics of creating a chain and a few stitches. In American crochet terms, should I instruct them on the half double or double crochet after the chain and single crochet? Additionally, I'm seeking a simple project to conclude the course that reinforces their learning, but given our tropical climate and the current hot and wet season, any projects suitable for colder climates are impractical. Do you have any recommendations?
