My family has lived near a river in South Jersey since the 1850’s, which is about as long as it’s been settled. The river flooded once in the 1950’s, but my grandparent’s house on the river only had water on the lowest levels then. My 85yo grandfather wouldn’t evacuate before Sandy because the house had never flooded before. I’m so glad the neighbor took him out at the last minute, because the water would have been chest height in his bedroom and he would have drowned. The thing us, this was 45 minutes inland from the coast!!! When I saw the water line in his house, my heart broke thinking of all the elderly folks hiding in attics and on top if furniture. I pray for everyone who lost friends, family members, and homes.
Ssome parts of south Jersey didn't get hit by Sandy. I lived in Long Island and my family lived in Hammonton in South Jersey, My ex husband ended up going to South Jersey With the kids to get away from Long Island.
@@hfrt29depended where you live. Probably dealt with Sandy’s high winds (60-90 mph gusts) but the surge really only affected the coasts.
@@hfrt29I was in Atlantic City when it hit and yes Everything North & South Of Atlantic City was hit… I remember being in The High Gate Apartments on the 6th floor looking out the balcony as the Eye was Dead Over Atlantic City… looking west on Route 30… I never in my 44 years Living In Atlantic City have I seen that much water on Route 30 at any given time … pleasantville and west of was rather safe.. But *Brigantine, Atlantic City, Margate, Ventnor, Longport, Ocean City, Avalon, Sea Isle City, Wildwood, North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, Cape May Court House, Rio Grande , North Cape May* All Got Hit Bad, Some More than others…!

I lived on the beach in Long Beach, NY.. Hurricane Sandy was a crazy storm and most people near me didn't leave because the year before, I think it was Hurrican Irene, everyone predicted a huge storm and it was a very minor storm instead, so when Sandy came they thought it would be the same - just hype. Our barrier island was, at one point, totally submerged though.
I got away only losing a car and being unable to return to my apartment for 6 weeks. I was lucky. Many lost their homes. The amount of damage was insane but within a year the 2 mile long boardwalk was totally rebuilt and most of the homes were repaired or rebuilt. Many put on their homes on stilts.
For weeks there were crazy long lines just to get 5 gallons of gas. This was an important lesson. Fill your gas tank if you're expecting a storm. It doesn't hurt and it could save your life. And make sure you have enough for your generator, if you have one. If you didn't gas up before the storm you could easily wait 5-10 hours or more to get just a 5 gallon can of gas. Most people were stranded and the emergency services were overwhelmed.
I remember when I was about 10 and the local park was about normal and after sandy felt like a different park with mini lakes everywhere and mushrooms on all the fallen tree branches.
I remember these nights.. it was horrible the day after 😢
And it was so freaking cold!!! I'll never forget it!no heat,nothing. The worst nightmare is having a natural disaster with it being cold out!! I lived in Huntington Long Island at the time
I live in Huntington too, and after the storm hit, a tornado came down our street. They had to take down my Colorado blue spruce that was over 100 years old and all my trees and arborvitaes came down...they cut down the spruce 😢and The logs were all over my front lawn and Then it snowed out on top of it and then halloween was the next day and I had keep yelling At the trick-or-treaters Do not walk across my lawn because you couldn't see the gigantic logs that were covered with snow...we took my boat out of the marina on west shore rd...It was in the driveway and it was covered in snow...it was so unbelievable! But nothing like the storms when I lived in Bayville on the sound 4 houses off the beach that was crazy!
Where I lived in Huntington, we had no power for 2 weeks it was like Generator city, it was so loud... people were Stealing peoples generators, and it was like don't gas anywhere. No matter what there's always gonna be crime happening! People suck! I bet the hookers was still turning tricks in the city!
And there was a major snow storm a few days later. A nor'easter. That was insane! Cold and no electricity. I lived in Long Beach but retreated to Roslyn and got snowed in and stranded. That was a crazy time.

I was 11 when Sandy hit New Jersey. My power went out off for one second, but me, Aunt, live in Ocean City. When Sandy hits, i will never forget it's i 22 now
Hurricane Sandy was an amazing storm. A Tropical Cyclone becoming an Extratropical Cyclone and being pulled ashore by the jet stream and a large cyclone with high winds pushing water right into NYC. Fifth most destructive hurricane to ever hit the United States. Incredible storm. NYC is not prepared for the next one.
everything from rockaway Park to long Beach was Hella bad. Projects dealing with those same issues but with hundreds of ppl on top of each other

I was about 17 and I remember social media had us going insane I was living in the bronx in Pelham parkway so we didn't get flooded only a couple power outages and knocked down tree's the trains were getting ready to shutdown due to sandy and at that time I was in queen's about 2 hour's from home at a Friend's house with my little brother I'm so glad we got on the last train leaving queen's ❤❤❤❤
I remember Superstorm Sandy from MD. Some areas lost power for a few days, but the power where I lived just flickered. However, we did lose phone service for the landline we had back then. I heard some cellphone towers were knocked out by Sandy in the NE as well.

I love visiting the coast, but I've always refused to live near the ocean. Whether it be a hurricane or tsunami, I'm a lousy swimmer.
Thanks for this. We had no power for over a week, so we missed a lot of what was happening outside of our own problems.
I hate to say this... But as hard as it is to get funds from insurance... Fema... Govt... State.... You need to be as difficult as your insurance company giving out money for repairs... That's why some companies are that tuff... 😢😢Scammers are everywhere.. They are the sweetest ones...

I was 17 when this hit and up until that Monday night I never had heard winds that strong.
Our area was out of power for thankfully only a few days. But during those days never had I also seen such a widespread blacked out area full of downed trees (many of which were snapped in half), power lines.
I road out sandy in a condo all the way at the top in crisfeild md its was crazy you could feel the condo rocking back and fourth water destroyed the docks and dumpsters and cars were floating away sandy was a scary storm

I lived in Louisiana at the time and watched Sandy on TV as it hit the east coast.
Wow, like nothing I've ever seen. It's like a war zone!
I had to sleep in my basement I lived in Fairfield CT at the time but my house was on high ground and a tree fell on my back deck

Imagine being like that poor lady at the 7 minute mark - she’s lost everything and some obnoxious tv reporter shoved a microphone in her face and asks her stupid questions. I’m sorry, but those tv reporters, anchors over in the USA are so phoney and care nothing for the people they harass just to inflate their own ego when their name and face is shown on tv. They also seem to dumb down everything. I don’t know how viewers over there manage to sit through a news bulletin without launching a boot at the tv! You guys obviously have a lot of patience.
I was there but I don't remember the fire. It was hard to follow along without power...
I remember that the slow moving storm was huge,it extended all the way to the ohio border.a cat 1 but massive.
The BBC’s documentary was better - Sandy, Anatomy of a Storm, I think that’s what it’s called. Less of those annoying news anchors doing their blabbering and better all round.
One thing that never gets mentioned was the National Guard and how they didn't help. At least they didn't help in Long Beach, NY. The day after the storm people were stranded everywhere and cars that worked kept getting stuck in the sand trying to get out of that disaster zone. The National Guard was sent in and just drove around in these giant trucks but would not help anyone. If you were stuck they said they were not allowed to help. You knew someone who needed help or to get to safety, they wouldn't do that either. I guess they were there to make anyone think twice about looting, but they had so many of these giant trucks and just watched everyone struggle. That was so wrong and I will never forget it. I'm sure it was orders, but by whom and why?
I was in a river flood in New Jersey and the National Guard there went above and beyond to help. They got in rubber boats, risked their lives, and actually saved and helped people. Like I thought they would do in NY. I saw zero help for anyone in NY from the National Guard even though they seemed to be everywhere in Long Beach.
Was this the first time we saw DEW fires?
