Are you using your pinky on the 12th frets of the A and D string for the main riff after the intro? You make it look so easy. I can’t seem to fret both strings with my pinky that way.
Hey, I am using the pinky finger for that part and kind of roll it down to flatten a bit. I did a live stream a couple weeks ago where I explain it a bit and do some dexterity warm ups: ruclips.net/user/live1hw9fdwjksE?si=i6z98ttMtoYkX6-h I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@@PhishGuitarLessons You provide an amazing service and really excellent content. This really helped me with positions: I could tell my tone was off in some places. By all means this channel should cover the cost your equipment. ;-)
I’ve learned this song in two different positions - 12th to 15th fret and 7th to 10th fret - this is a third….9th to 12th fret? Both sound fine. I’m not sure which one Trey actually plays.
What effects etc are you using? Tone is spot on. I’m a bassist and the guitar players I play with use digital effects to try to emulate Trey’s tone and can’t quite nail it.
Hey Matt, thanks for watching! Here is a rig rundown I did a while back, so you can get a sense of how I'm getting my tone: ruclips.net/video/e6FGnWAU2lk/видео.htmlsi=zgTVtFezbYIFUkkz
I learned a lot of this song at the 12th to 15th fret instead of lower like this. I've started and stopped working on this song so many times over the years... never could remember all the parts. Always impressed to see someone like you who can play all these Phish songs so well.
I did the exact same thing. Figured it out by ear back in the mid 90's. I can't believe how much misery I caused myself over the past 25 years doing weird slides, finger contortions and odd picking patterns. Unfortunately, it is so ingrained into my muscle memory now I don't think I can relearn this properly. Mr. Emmerson (I think) is a real treasure.
@@michaelheinfling637 Hey Michael, thanks for the patreon sign up and comment! I think you are right on the money with those chords, the Bb should be Bb7 and the other is Edim. Thanks again!
@@prcc yeah because he learns on ultimate-guitar like the rest of us. dude is mid AF and a kid toucher as far as im concerned. much better at youtube than he is at guitar. I have no basis for these claims, just feel very strongly that he keeps barbie dolls under his stupid hats.
"***NOTE: The Bb chord in the chorus should be a Bb7 and the "Gdim/Bb" should be Edim." Very important, especially the Edim since it is often wrong on many online tutorials/resources.
@@PhishGuitarLessons could you point me to some of your phish lessons that are easy riffs? I am just getting into learning lead guitar and ive learned how to play simple and mikes song so far
I practice this song, and as I get it down, little by little, it occurs to me I'm in it for the long haul, because this is a hell of a lot of work just to learn only one Phish song
Anyone willing to spell out the Bb7 voicing he references at 4:31. The tab on the bottom only shows the traditional 6th fret barred version, but his hand is doing something different, and I can't quite figure it out.
I am confused with the Bb7 chord you play and the diagram. Basic Bb with the pinky adding the 7th? Thanks for posting; seen so many versions of this song.
Hey Larry, I recorded the video a while ago and when I went back to do this re-edit I realized that the majority of the time Trey plays a Bb7 voicing like I put on the chart rather than what I played so I would go with the chart. Let me know if that makes sense, thanks!
Hey just email me for the pdf at phishguitarlessons@gmail.com or join the patreon and they’re all posted there and midi versions as well. Thanks for watching and yes to sugarbush...eventually...
I need to clear my schedule for a month and spend it practicing what you've provided all of us. Thank you so much.
Have at it, I’m happy to help!

Man… even the guitar tone is perfect. Nicely done!
Ty so much for doing these bro
No problem Neil!
Amazing tone and superb playing. This is one of my all time favorites live, and it’s a great song to work on to improve as a guitarist.
The light bulbs just went off on some many tid bits that I have not put together. Thank you for unlocking my brain!

I noticed Marty Schwartz teaches the intro that way, between the 12th and 15th frets.
