I had a neighbor whose son had autism and was a toe walker. He was still toe walking at 10 years old, which caused his tendon to not grow and when they tried getting him to walk on his feet, it was very painful. He ended up working every other day with OT and PT, but it didn't help, so he had to get surgery. He's now 20 and walks normally, graduated from high school, has a good job, and lives with roommates.

Love your channel and appreciate your transparency in your journey with you kids’ special needs. As a mom of 5 with 2 year old twins that were just diagnosed with autism, it’s nice, in a way, to not feel so alone in my struggles. Thank you again. 💙

I am a toe walker as well, it started from before I could even walk by myself, it’s been a source of serious anxiety, bullying and pain in my life to the point I was hard casted into a stretched position and forced to wear splints during sleep or relaxation hours. Those splints were the worst part of my life for a long time, imagine being forced to wear metal frames on your legs and have it feel like those frames are bending your limbs backwards… it’s hard, beyond what anyone outside of it could ever imagine. You are doing the best you can for him and this struggle he faces. No matter how much pain I was in I never once and still would never blame my mom for any of it because she was doing everything she could to help me. In the end it ended up not mattering much in my case however, I still do it occasionally to relieve muscle tension and pain in my calves, ankles, and feet. And I developed Tenosynovitis of the ankle on at least one side due to the over exertion of those muscles and tendons in my ankles, I developed this around 10 years in and didn’t realize I had developed it for almost another 10 years after that. Toe-walking was something I was bullied about by other kids, and some adults unfortunately. The adults would tell me to just put my heel to the ground or to “walk normal” and once the adults brought it up the kids around us felt free to use it against me to hurt me too. Toe walking is not just a physical condition, the mental strain of trying to “fix” myself coupled with the emotional pain of wondering why everyone was so mean to me about it almost broke me as a child. It makes me happy to see more people talking about this condition even existing, I’ve had bully’s tell me it’s fake and I did it for attention, and I had doctors tell me that the only option In my case was to physically lengthen my Achilles’ tendon through surgery, but in turn I would risk having to learn how to walk again at 10-12 years old. My entire point in writing this is if you have this condition or ANY other, you are not something that is broken, you are still a valuable person, and no matter what please always remember that you are beautiful and this does not define who you are and who you could become some day. I think it’s rotten that adults told me with certainty that this condition would last forever and I would never beat it or find my own way past it. I think adults need to learn to be more understanding, and compassionate towards children who carry the physical and mental strife surrounding a condition or disability. Toe walkers are not weird or attention seekers, if anything I only ever wanted people to stop noticing it, I wanted it to be something I could hide because of how ashamed others made me feel about it when I couldn’t change any of it. If you resonate with any of this for whatever reason and your still reading, thank you, you rock as a person, and there are people out here who love you for you and want to change the game so future toe walkers and disabled children don’t have to face mental torment on top of the physical pain they already carry every day.

Here is some information on the SMOs: the solid backed SMOs are that way to limit plantar flexion(toe walking) and give more ankle stability; they will be a bit uncomfortable if you try to walk on your toes. The SMOs that are open in the back allow for support with free ankle movement; it is still sometimes possible to go up on the toes with the open back SMOs.

I have an honest question. I know you go running, but your makeup and hair always look so good. How do you do it? Do you get ready in the mornings and then workout later with makeup and hair done? 🤯. You look great in the afternoons too!

My 6 year old just got his first pair of orthotics and yea I was given instructions on shoe shopping which to me kind of sucks that the Billy brand is legitimately like the only shoes for them. Now the reviews on the billy shoes are absolutely horrible to everyone is saying how cheaply made they are and how they don't last which sucks 😳 😐

Hope the SMO's work well for Sawyer. Has tethered cord been ruled out for him? Toe walking is a sign, and it is common in those with us on the spectrum. All the best.

She literally said it’s been ruled out.

@@crohniequeenab No need to be rude. The occult type can't be seen on MRI, so that likely is not ruled. out. Just keep that in mind if the SMO's do not work or he develops other tc Symptoms. All the best.

I thought that, too, at first. It actually turns out there are two different things-SMOs are smaller, whereas AFOs are taller.
