A work of art! Beautiful!
It really is!
Awesome - Very Well Done! And, as usual everything is professionally presented in a concise format! Thank you for sharing :-)
It's official, I don't like anyone that much that I would make them clear ice. :)
That is the prettiest ice 🧊 I've ever seen 😍 W.O.W.!!
satisfying to watch
mad respect for you. you could've easily made it lengthier but kept it concise.
Well this quite clever even though it is something that I never wondered about. Thanks 😊
This was fun to watch. I am too lazy to make clear ice. Thanks Chris.
I think you're right. The bottom line is who really needs clear ice! It was fun to experiment to see how to make it clear though. Thanks!
“Hey Chris - wanna come to my party tonight?”
..”what kinda ice do you guys have there?”
“Umm, regular ice?”
..”sorry, you didn’t even give me time to make you some cool ice, no can do! 🧊 “
“Erm, ok... .. ???!”
I was JUST wondering about this! Thank you so much Chris, this was fun
Ice with less impurities and O2 melts less quickly keeping your drinks cool with minimal dilution. Also clear ice looks awesome.
I don't care what you're talking about, it's always good!
Cool! Literally.
Genius, absolute genius!
This definitely made its way on my BUCKET list 😉🧊📝
Just EXACTLY what I needed for my next BBQ bash. That is some really "COOL" science. Thanks for sharing.
Alot of work for clear ice. Good presentation.
My nephew Shawn is the king of bourbon over ice drinkers. We have discussed many ways to make crystal clear ice! thanks for the time you spend to make science applicable to every day living!!! you rock CN!!
So yummy . Clear ice my favorite
You always come up with the unusual and most entertaining things. Thanks
Only 1 way to say it...Fing brilliant....cheers!
Omg the clear round ones ❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Great video. Enjoyed watching the clear ice make. Thanks for the video.
Post more often! I love watching your videos!
that's pretty cool
Awesome.
Awesomely COOL
Dude I was so inspire of your cigarette video and I show it to people that smoke in our country and they quit smoking now :)
I love the sounds in this episode. It makes me wonder what it takes to get a piece of clear ice big enough for a sculpture. Like they had in the movie ground hog day
That is pretty cool, Chris! Neat idea!
Brilliant
So cool!!
Kool, thanks
That’s cool 😎
Awesome Chris ... Love you 😘
This process is what powers the ocean currents. When Ice freezes the molecules expand and form a matrix so perfect that there is no room for any impurity’s. In the case of sea ice, the salt is forced out of the water and the heavy cold salty water sinks to the ocean floor. That temperature is almost uniformly 2 to 4 degrees Celsius throughout the oceans at depth. The only other time water will display this matrix-like structure but at room temperature is surface tension. The 1 or so millimeter of surface tension affected water is also pure. It too will form a matrix so close that impurity’s will be forced out. Needless to say, I find water fascinating. Thanks for the videos you do.
I’m three years late getting to this one but as always, you’re brilliant Chris!
Thank you kindly!
I like your oil extraction Idea the Best. Thats nice !
Very Cool. I've always found clear ice fascinating. The kits to make clear ice are slowly getting cheaper - $30 on amazon.
I'll have to give it a try sometime. I think I have a foam cooler or small lunch box laying around somewhere.
I thought about drilling a holes in some of the cheap silicon ice molds and see if I could get them to work with a cooler like yours.
Shape it to a magnifying glass and start a fire
Very well done. Never realized untill now why ice is cloudy.
Love the pipe idea!
Thanks!
Great, Ready for moonshine I've been saving for 5 years! It's going to be so great I can fell the hangover already. Saving some for the hair of the dog.
The ice it look s very dope. B]
Something for me to try . Thanks .
Its a fun experiment.
that's the sort of thing I'd do for a party and no one would notice!
I’ve enjoyed watching a lot of your videos during quarantine. Your a genius👍🏼
Awesome! Thank you!
You are a genius
Ha! Thanks!
I love ice ❤
Cool I wanted clear ice for my squirrels......
Informative directional freezing ice video! 🧊 Going to have to try the shapes will save time from cutting the ice. Thank you for an entertaining and educational video 😁
Wow
you always have cool stuff!
Geat video! I always thought it was impurities not air that causes cloudy ice. Can't wait to try this.
Cool
Now that was interesting 🤠👍🥃
genius! and dont forget gloves!
Love the tutorial. Did you try using less water in the cooler and if not why?
You are amazing!
You are the granpa or uncle everyone would like to have!
Like a super super cool one, not the lame one who asks howis school and stuff...
What a great comment!! Thanks!
Sweeeeeet!
What if you made a silicone mold of an object could you then make clear ice of the object? Or does it need to have an open bottom?
In a land Down Under we call that a ‘bread knife’ darl! (You’ll have to watch ‘The Castle’ to REALLY get it😜)
Genius - thank you ! I didn’t see the food grade cylinders on your site, did I miss it ? Thanks again
I find 36 hours in my freezer give me the thickness I want. I cut the ice with my oscillating saw, with a blade I only use for ice. To finish off the cubes, I heat up a frying pan and using tongs to hold the cubes I can square them off and polish the sides.
Ice on Ice on ice
This food grade pipe is there any other material pipe / cylinder we can use ? I really want cirle shapes lol. Amazing video bro
This dude really wanted him some clear ice lol
I can’t stop laughing! Right. i forgot I am barely well enough to type. I LOVE THE IDEA-in theory! ♥️
Love it! You always have great videos!
I need you to invent something for me lol. I'm looking for a way to mulch leaves. That does not include running my lawn mower over them a hundred times. I found leaf mulchers on Amazon of course and other places but they all have bad reviews. I looked online for DIY leaf mulchers and no one has invented one that really looks usable. I think someone with your mind could do this 😁.
Can I second this thought. Bc I agree! I bet Chris's brain is already at work.
@@tracybowling97 I gather bags of leaves from the neighborhood. At the moment I'm mulching them with my lawn mower which is not only wasting gas but you know ozone problems and all that. It takes a tremendous amount of time. I like to use them in my garden. You can't just throw the leaves on your garden. Also I put them in my worm beds so they need to be kind of mulched up so they're not matting up things.
Great idea!
@@karenlatham4053 My gardening friend takes the bags of leaves she's collected, dumps them into a large trash can, and uses the string trimmer to mulch the leaves. It doesn't take that long to do a batch.
@@rwind656 I tried that at first. I think my string trimmer was a little weak or something because it was taking forever. You wouldn't believe the amount of leaves I gather lol.
I will definitely keep it in mind for fall though. Maybe this year I'll break out the big guns and use the high power trimmer and my curbside recycle bin 😉.
It’s like see-through glass B]
I came through the channel "Área Secreta"
i noticed the clouds in the ice but never paid em any mind, now i look forward to trying this
1:36 is just beautiful
I figured a lot would like that for the ASMR of it. Thanks!
So I really enjoyed the discovery process and clear ice outcome. But too much work just to cool my beverage 😎
Fair enough!
If u leave for a week in freezer will it freezer all the way to the bottom
A will back I sculptured ice 🧊 for buffets at a private club. The ice house blue air into it to make clear ice. This was done all the time while it was freezing. However they did not do this with every 300 lbs block. Only for special orders.
Ice sculptures are cool, a culinary art that deserves greater recognition! Can anyone be considered a chef without the skills to make a serviceable ice sculpture.....? 🤔
Great video Chris. You've explained this method better than anyone else.
I appreciate that!
hi i want to learn something why instead of throwing the ice box in the freezer and how many hours
If I want to freeze a small object like a coin or ring in the center of the ice block, how is that done?
Freeze water from a zero filter in trays. Watch what happens. The ice actually climbs straight UP like upside down icecicles
What cocktail are you going to make?
Please explain to me the bar in ice plan how to make clear 150 kg.
Neat.... or should I say, on the rocks? I’ll leave now.
This makes me genuinely curious what would happen if you mix food dye into it and allow it to freeze like this, would it take too long and thus all of it sinks or is there a way to make it remain cloudy long enough to get some interesting effects with the ice?
That's a good question. I would think it would stay mixed myself.
What if you freeze it longer than 17 hours, or you freeze the whole water mass solid? Will it still be clear?
It will not be totally clear. The top portion will be, but the bottom will have the trapped air and minerals in it.
I typically allow my cooler to stay in the freezer around 25 hours. It will depend on the freezer temperature as it's set, but I have found 25 hours to be the sweet spot. Not solidly frozen, but allows the bubbles to dissipate and is as clear as can be.
I don't see the link to the food grade 1 1/2" pvc pipe. Is it still available? I've searched for it, but have been unable to find any.
Instructions unclear, made an iceberg instead.

Great vid on clear ice!!
That was cool really cool, smile.
Im not sure if you already tried this but could you use cigars to see what will happen if you smoke em
Finished the video I’m very surprised
2:33 oh you sly fox ;)
If you leave the cooler in the freezer for longer than 17 hours do you get the same clear results with more ice?
Past 17 or 18 hours depending on your freezer, it will start to freeze from the bottom and sides. and start to trap the air in parts of the ice which is thicker and harder to carve off. It's all about experimenting though. Give it a go.
See my other comment from another poster, but for me, 25 hours is the sweet spot and the ice is not solidly frozen, but you get a thicker block of ice to cut
If you leave the cooler in the freezer longer, will you get more ice?
Yes. The thicker and bigger it gets though the harder it is to cut
Would boiling the water get the air out?
I tried hot water from the tap, cold water from the tap, boiled water while still hot, boiled water cooled then frozen, water boiled twice, water boiled 3 times, distilled water, reverse osmosis water and water that was placed under a vacuum first then frozen.....and they all froze the same. They were all cloudy like in the video.
The ice dropping down reminds me of the Monty Python movie where one of the Python characters has that baby and it slowly slides out and POP!
Classic!
What is magical about 17 hours?
If I leave the cooler in the freezer longer, will I get more ice?
i was wondering the same thing.
The longer you leave it, the thicker the ice becomes at the top plus it starts to freeze from all directions eventually creating a large block of ice that is cloudy. I found the thickness is perfect for ice cubes at the 17 hour mark. But it's all about experimenting. Give it a go.
What would happen if you put ice cube trays in a cooler?
In a cooler it will be cloudy because it is still being trapped in the ice cube tray.
Next bill nye
The process is correct but he explanation is imprecise. There is forcing down of air in the water and impurities. What happens is that water is one of the few liquids that expand (increase in volume) when frozen. So, normal ice cubes freeze from all directions, trapping liquid water in the center. When this last part freezes it expands cracking the ice and allowing air within the cracks- here the foggy part. When you freeze directionally with a cooler the only thing you really do is to let the cracking happen at the botton (the last part to freeze), so you can discard it. Hope that helps.
