a lot of species of firefly are sexually dimorphic, and only the males become what you usually think of when you talk about fireflies, while the females look like big larvae. this is most likely an adult female, hence why it glows.
@I’m that kind of guy • glow-worm is a bad common name as it refers to a lot of different animals from different taxa. The one you're talking about is most likely Arachnocampa larvae. They hang from the roof of caves and use their glow to attract prey. Edit: The comment I was replying to is now gone.
On top of being hard as shell, they're often poisonous or just taste terrible (the light serves as a warning signal to this). Some frogs and lizards still eat them though.
Wow their larvae even glow! I’ve always loved fireflies. If they ever get in the house you just set them free outside. Idk what person wouldn’t like fireflies. Probably helps keep them alive too.
This looks pretty similar to the so-called 'Trilobite beetle (Platerodrilus)'. As far as I know those are neotenic females, while the males go through metamorphysis. Are those related somehow?
As no one bothered to really explain after 4 years, assuming you haven't found out yourself already... Yes, they are more closely related to each other than they are to many other beetles; trilobite beetles belong to the net-wing beetle family, while glowworms are in the firefly beetle family. Both belong to the same superfamily (elateroidea), and many beetles in this group have larviform females or soft shells, both of which are seen in net-wing and firefly beetles. The larvae also tend to look somewhat similar among members of this superfamily, which is expected in most beetle groups and can be used as a potential id method.
This is an adult. The females of some species never enter metamorphosis, but they do get bigger as they age, thus they end up looking like giant larvae. It is kind of both a larva and an adult at the same time.
Those armor-like plates on its back make me think of a dinosaur, or a dragon. Plus its tail glows like magic. Who needs fantasy fiction when you can study the realm of insects!

@@breadthealien it can be easy to confuse the two, given the size of this one it would have to be a mature female.
@@breadthealien Well it also says large female in the description

That larva is quite big! The only fireflies i'm familiar with are miniscule in comparison. Stunning.

I fear to think of how large they'd grow with increased oxygen.
Insects grow quite large in growth chambers with extra supplenental oxygen.
Thats why they grew so big in the carboniferious period
These insects used to be the size of birds back when dinosaurs were around, glad they evolved and shrunken down
why fear that, it sounds freaking awesome.

I know that bearded dragons can't have them because just one can kill them.
There’s actually a species of firefly that dines on other fireflies!
Another species of firefly predates on them, mimicking the mating flashes of other fireflies to lure them in.

Does their tail glow all the time? Because having a glowing tail must make it easy for predators to find them.
Oh ok.
2 years late but they glow to warn predators that they are foul tasting
