- This is my first time ever listening to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album. I sat and listened to the entire album in one sitting, and split it into two videos: Side One of the LP and Side Two. This is part one, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Pts. 1-5" and "Welcome to the Machine".

Al's Vinyl Collection is my way of sharing my passion with the world. I welcome all, if you're an avid Vinyl record enthusiast or just a passer-by, come and sit with me for 15 minutes to talk about the golden age of music. A civilised format from a more civilised time.
I do not own rights to video, I do not wish to monetise the video - I just want to react to it to bring entertainment and enjoyment for those watching.
I appreciate your kind comments about the analysis a lot. Honestly, it's not something that comes naturally a lot of the time. In school I hated analysing literature and poetry, I don't know the great techniques of analysis. But with a group like Pink Floyd, the work deserves to be analysed to a degree with how much love has been put into it.
Sometimes what I say may be very wrong or may seem a little generic. Just know I do care a lot about what I'm saying, and wish I could interpret it all just that little bit deeper!
No worries, you are doing great mate, your analysis and reaction of the songs are perfect. Don't be to harsh on yourself for wanting to analyse everything correctly all you have to do to keep me and i think many other watching is to take the music in and enjoying like you are already doing:) ps i would not have a proplem with you saying something in the moment in the song instead of having to wait until after. But keep doing what you want to do.
My only criticism is that you self-critize. Indeed you are doing great, and this is about your reaction!
You're doing better! No need to explain or criticize yourself. Those parts are not interesting to us. Reaction videos, at their best, are like sharing your favorite music with a friend. Just give the music your attention. If it moves you, we will see that. Keep up the good work.
Your reaction videos are fantastic Al. I have been eagerly anticipating this all week. 😊 Now you have listened to two Pink Floyd albums, one with note-taking on first reaction and one without, YOU are the best person to decide what works best. I have no preference. Whichever you choose, take that method into your reactions of Animals and The Wall. Believe in YOU.
More confidence please. Nobody except the band really knows what it means, an if you had the opportunity to ask them, they may very well say it's up to you to figure it out for yourself anyway. What matters is what it means for you. I remember when I was young, I would play Pink Floyd albums and my mom was listening- how could she not considering the volume. On wish You Were Here one of her favorite lines came from Welcome to the Machine - "...you bought a guitar to punish your mom..." so she bought me a Fender, almost as if to say here you go, now punish me. But it worked out that I would now play songs for her by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and many others. I think she set me up just fine, thank you.
HIGH Al, I'm your newest subscriber. 69 year old who has heard most all the greatest music ever produced. I follow many like yourself each day. I often recommend songs they like.... a lot. You will be glad you did this tune....4 black brothers with a white drummer created this ICONIC Masterpiece from the 60’s Psychedelic Era Trust me…. You do not want your life to end without hearing this song.
“TIME HAS COME TODAY“- The Chambers Brothers - Album Long version, then Live. PLEASE and Thank You. 1,595,600+ views

Thank you very much for your support :) I will check those two versions out very soon!!
Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. Hard to explain how awesome that moment was in my life. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.
No. 40, if you see this - thank you for the comment telling me to tell people to subscribe. It was well needed reassurance and a confidence boost!
To anyone reading this, I do still feel a little awkward telling you to subscribe, I don't want to sound greedy or anything haha, but I'm learning to be a little more self confident :)
Al looks remarkably like I felt in 1975 when I was begining eighth grade and bought this album, put it on the turntable, plugged the headphones into my Electrophonic stereo, lowered the tone arm, leaned back against the headboard of my bed, which I was able to do thanks to having an extra long cord on the headphones, and took a journey of thought.
Rick Wright always said that there are few Floyd albums he could listen back to for pleasure, and this is one of them
Love your reactions. Do what you feel, it’s your channel. SOYCD is a masterpiece!
Wow. Listening in stereo on an original pressing takes me right back to the discovery. SOYCD is the song that started my journey in ‘82. Enjoy.
Wonderful reaction one of the best on these Floyd albums I bought my first Floyd album in 1973 and have every one since then. Music is like all art forms subjective when it comes to reacting go with what feels most comfortable as for the interpretation go with what you think. the music of this era quite often the lyrics were deliberately ambiguous and the music quite often experimental that is why it still feels relevant today.
That goes for The Heavy Metal of Led Zepplin, Deep Purple and Black Sabath and also Prog Rock of Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull and Genisis There is no right way or wrong way to listen either of course with concept albums from Pink Floyd, Yes, Tull, Genesis and ELP it is better to listen to the whole album to get the whole concept of the album but not mandatory to enjoy their music.
I find your taking notes to be very unique and really shows that you are listening and analyzing. There is always going to be critics. Let them start their own channel.
I love this comment so much, because it's so true! Let them start their own channel! Thank you for your kind words - I'll tell 'em where to stick it next time!
@@alsvinylcollection Spot on.
Great job 👍 Pink Floyd sticks with for life ….been best part 50 yrs for me now . Your review format is perfect for me. Btw , you have perfect voice for radio ….soothing and thoughtful 😎 Keep up the great work 👍
I agree with others that "Crazy Diamond" parts I-V is a masterpiece , but parts VI-IX is even better
Nothing inherently wrong about making notes ("half a page of scribbled lines" as PF put it). Looking forward to this!
Al, thanks for putting in the effort to enhance the listening experience for us.
You did me and hopefully many a great favor with this reaction on a 1975 pressing. It doesn't get any better than Shine part 1 to 5.
Great reaction! You nailed the lyrics of Shine IMHO.
I expected you'd mention the subtle signature changes during the acoustic guitar solo on Welcome to the Machine.
Yes, nailed the lyrics for sure. It was many years after I first heard SOYCD that I paid proper attention to all the lyrics, two that I really love after realizing the context are "target for far way laughter" and "wore out your welcome with random precision." Are there others who underappreciated lyrics when younger?
Well done Al, I’m enjoying seeing you develop your presentation style.
I notice that you have almost reached the 1000 subscriber milestone, congratulations. As always I’ll be keenly looking out for your next Video.
Regards, No 40. 👍🎸🤘
Thank you my friend, it's been a crazy journey already in this short month and a half. I look forwards to what is next :)
Gilmour's guitar. Oh man. But also, God damn, Rick Wright. Honestly, Rick is such an essential part of what makes Pink Floyd Pink Floyd and this album really showcases his unique, subtle but remarkable compositional and instrumentation talents. Honestly, I could give Roger Waters similar props for his bass work and no-one, but no-one, lays down a slow six like Nick Mason and his simple but perfect fills are iconic. They had big expectations to meet after Dark Side and they did not disappoint. This is an amazing album. Can't wait to see side 2. And, yeah, I'm subbing for it. Nice one, bruv.
Love your reactions. Really appreciate you reacting to Pink Floyd the way it was intended, as a whole and not by separate tracks.
Great listening to this again with you, it never ages, never gets dull, always stimulates…… Two more to consider for the same treatment from the same period ‘Close to the edge’ YES and ‘Crime of the Century’ Supertramp. Great music and great production for the time.
Very insightful review as ever…always be yourself & do it your way…👍👍👍
Nice job on an utterly classic side of Pink Floyd in their run of legendary albums. Looking forward to side 2. This is another album I nave heard 1,000s of times but it never gets old, with its spot on satire of the music industry and of course the saga of Syd showing their great songwriting and the tone of the century on David Gilmour's guitar and the wizardry from all of them. Those albums were immediate classics but like fine wine or whiskey, they have aged oh so well and will be appreciated by many generations to come. It is a wonderful thing what modern reactors are doing, Rock On! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶
You are my first subscription and it's because you're doing a very good job. You taking notes on DSOTM was not a problem for me, we could still see you smiling, intrigued or surprised, as well as getting emotional on Time. Be confident, you'll get more and more subscribers, it just takes quite some time. Your reactions add value. As long as you follow this path and remain authentic, perseverence will pay off. Wish you all the best.
This comment means a lot more to me than I can express through words. Thank you, thank you, thank YOU my friend :)
So far you're the best reviewer of PF's songs , you respectfully not interrupting with useless interpretations as we usually get from other reviewers. The design is gorgeous (vinyls) and your analysis is neutral . Bravo !
New sub here. Anyone who appreciates Gilmour's solos as much as you do deserves it!
One day when you have a chance, check out Shine On You Crazy Diamond LIVE at the PULSE CONCERT. It is a great live performance.
I'd gladly sit and listen through the entire PULSE concert with Al's comments, but that would be a 3-hour video :D A stream perhaps?... :)
@@Krabelli I can't see what the problem is with 3 hrs when you talk about PF ;oP
Yknow, I do actually have a twitch channel that I stream on 3 days a week. Not much, just over 1300 followers BUT I was looking for new content and thought about reacting to stuff there! This would be a good chance!
A true masterpiece, the whole album. Pink Floyd is the best! Seen them many times. Insane the amount of talent these guys had!
Great job Al. I can’t wait for side two. Towards the end of Syd’s place in the band. They used to pick him up on the way to gigs, but has they grew tired of his disruptive behaviour they decided to stop picking him up. I believe this played on their minds the way they removed him from the band.
Please keep reacting to how you perceive the music. As stated, to please everyone is impossible and we don't want you to change into a robot. Not that I think you do, but be aware.
Yes your interpretations are quite spot on. And your sharp ear. You don't miss any detail. You mentioned you are impressed with people who hear the slightest detail differences within different remasters / releases. Think about it. People have listened to this classic album for nearly fifty years now. Every millisecond will be recognised. I recently got the 5.1 surround mix of DSOTM and heard sounds that were overshadowed in the stereo mix (On Te Run especially). They were never noticed until now. Listening to my old LP (vinyl as they are called now), I can point them out now, but very vagely. Oh yes, I did miss a reaction to Dick Parry's saxophone playing, though. What were your thoughts of that?

Everyone knows this but I still think it’s very cool
My favorite album of Pink Floyd. All their albums are fantastic but for just having a chill out moment this is the one for me. I recommend some of David Gilmour's solo albums as well. The Blue is a good one to chill to as well as many others. Keep spinning those discs and ROCK ON!
As great as dark side of the moon is, I still think this is Pink Floyd's masterpiece. Per your request I subscribed
I agree. Shine is their peak in my view.
@@willem-janageling3907 I couldn't agree more
@@willem-janageling3907 Yes, I enjoy this much more than the moon album.
Echoes for me is there masterpiece but SOYCD is my no 2 both are great
True, I also think Animals deserves its place, people think of the big 3 floyd albums but Animals is a match for those IMO
Dark Side, awesome. Wish... awesome. Animals... more awesome.
Yes, love the Animals album! ☺️
Enjoyed your take on this classic album think your pretty spot on with your analysis 👌 👍 look forward to side two ty 😊
Much appreciation for your reaction to the first half of this great album. SOYCD is an absolute favorite song of mine.
Of course we could pick out the little changes we've been listening to Pink Floyd since 1970
We lived with these albums on our turntables. Discovering nuances in Floyd's music is part of the experience, so yea, many people can tell a recording other than the original. I appreciate your insights to some of b my best memories.
Your doing just fine al glad your enjoying pink floyd keep going
Loved this reaction!! i can't wait for next part and you hearing all the other good pink floyd albums.
I Love Pink Floyd forever
Great reaction. I think you got the right process for Pink Floyd, and their fans.
Yes, this album is acid, musically and lyrically. Roger Waters become a better writer again, and he's "angry" against the system. While Gilmour and the other are still growing in mastering their craft. David wrote some great guitar licks on this one.
And I always cry with this masterpiece thinking about Syd. It's a journey about him not being able to cope with the "mega machine", because he was a "real artist" (I foreshadow: "A bleeding heart, and an artist"). I was a painter, and loved children fantasy (Lewis Carol style), so his songs were fresh and naïve like kid words, while being catchy and funny. I think it's not just LSD, not just clinical mental health, it was also the case of a kid, willing to live in a kind of dream and sweet world, a kind of paradise, and discovering adulthood and music (& art) industry not being so free, with money being the real god behind, with uneducated "managers" with poor taste acting as priests for this god.
Syd did break down, but in despair of the modern world stocks on our feet. Drugs and mental weakness were just the triggers to become recluse. That's my POV with all I red, and all I have listen from Syd and Pink Floyd work.
If I may, you could try to listen to "Dark Globe" from Syd, because I believe it's the song which led to "Wish You Were Here" answer from the band. I mean, not the only reason, but you might see a direct link with this song from Syd. It's a song were he exposes part of what is in his mind. The title of the song itself, might have been an inspiration for "Brain Damage" from *Dark* Side of the *Moon* (I see you on the dark side of the moon...).
Hi Al thanks for a brilliant review and your thoughts on side one of my favourite Pink Floyd album. I note that we have one thing in common as both of us first heard this album at the age of 22 although I was 22 in 1975 when the album came out. In those days you went to your local record shop to buy your LP and it became your valued possession. Keep up the good work and if don't mind I would suggest that you review Atom Heart Mother next as it 'gently' takes you backwards into their more offbeat earlier music style. Also talking 70's please consider reviewing the band Genesis with either a Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or Selling England by the Pound both classics in their own right. Also slightly away from these bands Renaissance with Turn of the Cards very different but musically exceptional.
I would imagine that Piper relates to Syd’s charismatic persona.
From what I read it seems everyone liked him and wanted to know him, be his friend.
People followed him, his wit and his charm..... just like the children followed the Piper of Hamlin.... laughing and merry as they went.
Not suggesting anything sinister about Syd..... just pointing out that many people still call a liked person to be a Piper.
One that other people want to know and follow.
Pink Floyd's first album was Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Syd was the primary songwriter, vocalist and persona of the band at that time. So indeed he was the/a Piper suitably referred to in the lyric of SOYCD.
Excellent! And yes, losing the studious note-taking was a definite upgrade. Just natural emotions and expression is always the best when watching from this end. Subscribed.
I knew you would love it! It's amazing musical piece and it takes us all on a journey. It occurred to me that PF songs and music (from this era) deal with such grand themes (life, death, loss, etc). Never a simple love song so to speak. Just a thought! Can't wait for side 2!
Great reaction. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.❤️✌️🌼
I absolutely love your reactions and comments on music in your videos!
definitely subscribing now
SOYCD - Its about Syd Barret - Great stuff
"Steel breeze" might refer to the harsh emotional atmospheres and currents of those years, dealing with the discipline and greed of the music industry, and other likely adversaries.
Wow, what a great reaction. And on top of that, a "top of the line"-analyze too! Instant subscribe!
Great reaction, Al... new subscriber here! A question for everyone... I have never heard any commentary from the band, or others, about the final "scene" from Welcome To The Machine. At the end you hear a door slide closed (I visualize it as an elevator?), and the music gets muted or subdued. Then, you are transported (maybe up in the elevator), the car slows and stops. You can hear the muted sound of a party/ voices. The door slides open, and the voices are louder. Then, the voices begin to quiet... again, I visualize that the party goers turn to see who got off of the elevator, and are being "stunned or shocked into silence." Then, after everyone has stopped talking, at the very end I hear someone drop a "red Solo (plastic) cup" because they are so shocked. What does everyone else hear?
Please don't listen to the annoying ass music snobs that comment on music reactors videos. This is my favorite Pink Floyd album and I couldn't give less of a shit how you listen to it lmao. Just be you!!!!!!! Great video
I also recommend listening to The Wall at some point!
That's some world class advice, thank you :)
First heard this in 1975 in a mosquito ridden mangrove swamp in North Queensland, Australia, played on a car stereo attached to a battery in a hut. I'd gone to see a bloke called 'Detour', and that visit really was quite a detour. Nowadays, you wouldn't hang about in that swamp because, since they've been protected, there are hundreds of huge salt-water crocodiles there. I imagine that they're all dedicated Pink Floyd fans now.
Maybe detour became dead end.
🥰 Awesome PF reactions! ☺ Almost all caught up! 🐰
Haha, you're a legend! I'll have to get some more Rush content out ASAP to keep you occupied 😆
Excellent reaction
So lots of allusion to Dark Side as you noted Sun and Moon references and also parallels to Money. in an interview Syd was described as having the light gone out of his eyes leaving black hole. the steel breeze also refers to the big city and the machine and companies firing at each other over signing contracts and managers.
as a Footnote "the Piper " is could be a number of things from the Pied Piper who was skilled at leading yet got ripped off which resulted in him locking himself away (incidentally in scottish folklore the piper leads fallen warriors to the afterlife similar to the albertross in echoes) , the piper at the gates of dawn which is from wind in the willows representing pan the wild god of Greek mythology,
The Machine well this may also be referencing Ken Kesleys Book "one flew over the cuckoos nest", the book version does have machine metaphors and characters institutionalised by the system and patients being under close survaillence. this track came to mind when i covered the book at A level.
personally I dont understand why people get upset with note taking as they have already listened in the first place and doing both is easy enough. Regarding remastering, sometimes when you have experimental music the deliberate distortions and some of the deliberate analogue sounds can be corrected and erased from the track causing problems.
Check out Echoes from the Meddle album... a true masterpiece!
There are many cross-references in the songs and with the "Steal breeze", you may want to check out Syd's "solo" albums. In the future listenings, the "Stone" meaning will be mentioned from Animals and into The Wall for instance. Mojo released a compilation CD of Syd's songs (they are on RUclips) they're FANTASTIC! ruclips.net/video/twu__4Bewlw/видео.html

Man you really need to dust off your records...
Hold on. Let me grab a couple of drinks....
I believe that Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar are the necessary critiques of the music industry, as they WERE was responsible for the down fall of Syd - as he could not handle the pressure to produce the industry required pop hits that they called for. So in this way the albums songs are tied in together. I enjoy that reaction. Cheers.
According to the other members (interviews) Syd had some schizophrenia illness (or bi-polar) at the same time started to use LSD and other hard drugs along with "friends " who were clearly with Syd to benefit from his success. So I don't think that music industry pressure was the main reason for his delusion.
you have to do reactions the way YOU want to do them. this is how you get your own "team" of followers. while DSOTM is their most successful and influential album, WYWH and ANIMALS arguably may be their superior labour, artistically speaking.
Don't change for anyone I too like to conduct the band when I listen to him keeping up with the metronome I understand
If your going to make The Dark Side of the Moon, then might as well follow up with Wish You Were Here...
I mean.... What else? 🤣🤣🤣
How should I play my quadraphonic record/LP of Wish You Were for best results, given to me by my neighbour who was a record salesman in the early 70s, played it once on my turntable stereo and it sounded pretty good. I have never been able to find a four channel amp since and wondered it it would be better.
of course you can tell the difference of a remaster, but not because anything's changed about the music, it just sounds better because it's been cleaned up. I don't understand people who want to listen to an older more muddy version of something.
My understanding steal breeze is a guitar.
I may be mistaken but I believe you have your headphones on where the left channel is playing in your right ear and visa versa. Should it make a difference? Probably not but it screws with my OCD. Stay safe...be well...
Haha, I'm very sorry if it's screwing with your OCD! I flip my webcam when recording as everything looks a bit better than it does when not flipped, so the left channel is still the left - only real difference is I don't look as much of a twat haha. Good spot though!
Just one little side remark, and I don’t know where it leads your thoughts, the word martyr is Greek and literally means witness
Dude, make your notes. Do you. 😉
You do what you do.. take notes .. don’t worry about people’s opinions.. opinions are like assholes we all have one and most of them stink
Nice job on an utterly classic side of Pink Floyd in their run of legendary albums. Looking forward to side 2.
