Björn, the guitarist, and Agnetha, the blonde girl who was lead singer in this song, were going through divorce procedings in 1979 when this song was written. Björn sat down with a bottle and wrote the lyrics one evening, then the next day he handed them to Agnetha who agreed to sing them. The song is inspired by their breakup, but it is not truly describing how it was. Their divorce was amicable and they shared custody of their children and continued to work together. There was no winner and no loser. It is pretty amazing that in the middle of their divorce, he wrote these lyrics and she sang them. Mind boggling. Two years later the other couple (Benny and Frida) also divorced, but the group continued to work together for another year before they took a 39 year break, reuniting to release a new record in 2021.

They produced this song and Knowing Me, Knowing You (that he wrote and she sang) and, although I’m not the biggest ABBA fan out there, they remain two of the most beautiful and poignant breakup songs I know.
