Fascinating stuff. As somebody else has pointed out,it would be a bit unlikely that the Germans would do nothing to stop US artillery pieces taking multiple shots at their fortifications.
The whole "test" is, to be mild, a bunch of horseshit invented by the Bureau of Ordnance to propagandize for Leslie McNair's ideas on what the TO&E should look like. McNair personally believed that the 57mm AT gun was more than enough for literally any task and to give the infantry a better gun was a waste of money. That, I suspect, is 90% of the reason for this film. "Why spend $$$ on an assault gun? AT guns will simply do everything!". Also uttered by the same man: "Tanks should never fight tanks! That's what incredibly specialized and limited tank destroyer units are for! And they must NOT be used for anything else!" McNair thought upgrading a lot of things that badly needed to be upgraded was a waste of money. Tanks, AT guns, rifles, bombs, aircraft, torpedoes... the man literally changed the entire course of the war based simply on his personal doctrines. Even when the Germans captured our bazooka in North Africa and reverse-engineered it into a vastly superior weapon, McNair insisted he was right and nothing would be changed. I'm not at all sorry he ended up being turned into cat-meat by his own bombers during Operation Cobra.
The pill boxes are all still intact and would still offer good protection to new soldiers replacing the casualties inside. Also those taking cover behind the middle wall likely weren't casualties. Plenty of warning to take cover then go back in for the invading force. The defenders will have received such training also
The spall and then the following fragmentation would kill anyone inside, regardless of location. It would essentially turn the inside into a shotgun with small projectiles ricocheting everywhere.
@@AK-pu2gm The baffle wall itself would produce spall, thats the most dangerous place you could be in the case of a direct hit. Same way that modern tank killing munitions work. They don't actually penetrate the armor, the energy of the impact cause bits of the metal on the inside of the impact point to fragment at a high velocity and produce the "shotgun effect" ,that I mentioned, which kills everyone behind the armor. There could certainly be survivors but mounting continuance defenses from the structure would be near impossible.

I'm not sure how 'simulated range' is useful. Penetration counts on velocity and if you're shooting at 400 yards, but calling it '1000 yards simulated', the velocity is not the same, so the result will not be the same.
The term ‘Simulated Range’ means the range IS 1000 yards. But it’s a simulation of an ACTUAL shot at an actual German Pillbox / bunker. And yes,... the guns have telescopic Direct Fire sights.
