  • March of 1987 The Disney Company started The Disney Store - a unique way to sell Disney merchandise in a local shopping mall. Today we are traveling back to the year 1997 (sort of) and visiting a pretty much untouched Disney Store in Brandon, Florida. This Disney Store has everything you remember from your childhood. From moving Disney figures such as Alice in Wonderland and Mickey Mouse, the famous Tower of Plush to the original paint and logos - Honestly, you wouldn't be surprised to see Michael Eisner walking around in this Disney Time capsule. Let's take a closer look!
Hello and welcome to the World of Micah! I travel around filming everything and anything I find interesting -from theme parks to abandoned urban exploring. If you enjoy learning more about Disney history, tips & secrets or a fan of Disney World nostalgia you have come to the right place. I also enjoy showing Universal Studios history and taking a look of what’s left of from classic attractions like JAWS and ‪Back to the Future‬. More of an Urban Exploring fan? I travel around Central Florida and film everything from abandoned Toys “R” Us stores to abandoned attractions. I'm also a major Movie Buff! I have found the filming locations from such films as Edward Scissorhands & Halloween & Hocus Pocus!
    Let’s take a closer look!

My god. It’s actually this version of the Disney store that made me into the Disney adult I am today. When I lived in New York the store had a train that went around the entire store. The amount of “No’s” I heard in this store when I wanted everything as a kid, makes me say yes to everything I want when I’m in the parks. It’s me making the child version of me standing in the themed Disney store HYPE.

I miss these stores so much. It was like a little piece of the parks when you couldn't be there. I used to always get my girls clothes from there and toys. Now they are 29 and 24😔

I was one of the opening managers of this store when it opened. It opened with the mall in 1995. Right across the hall used to be a WB Studio Store!
A lot of the interior is still the same. The carpet is new. It used to be the blue the exterior tiles are with multicolored “confetti” all over. Sadly, Belle never moved. Only a few pieces up top did. The cabinet where White Rabbit is was the original watch case. The grotto across from the register is where the collectibles department was. The screen on the back wall used to be 9 screens. It was a “new” design at the time. Older stores used a projection TV. These were 9 individual screens. It was a pain in the ass, actually. After I left (I went to Walt Disney World) they changed it to a large single screen monitor. And Plush Mountain used to be HUGE!!!
Sad to see it go. Thanks for the memories TDS 577.

It’s too bad they closed these stores. They were the best. They arent the same anymore. Ours closed 10 years ago and i bought me and my kids whole wardrobe plus every plush they ever made from that place since it opened till when it closed. You name it, i bought it. I miss it so much. I lived in that store!! I still have everything i ever bought from there. I almost cried watching this. It’s amazing that they made them all identical cause it looks exactly the same as the ones that were here in Canada. I agree with everything you said here today.

3 years later today right now I'm still feeling sad I'm miss walking in the store I miss shopping. My childhood feels damaged destroyed. I remember going in there when I was kid with my mom. Without the Disney store I just haven't been feeling the same when I walk in my mall. Also my life hasn't been feeling the same since after the Covid. I was actually a lot more happier before the pandemic.

In the 90s when I was a child we had 2 Disney Stores near me and I loved it so much.❤ One was in Mülheim an der Ruhr and the other was in the CentrO Oberhausen. As soon as you entered the store you felt like you were in another world... it's so sad that these stores no longer survive in Germany. The last attempt was made in Munich between 2017 and 2020, but was unfortunately unsuccessful because there were too few sales figures...😢

Agree Micah, these store designs, looks and overall layout remind me of why I fell in love Disney as a kid. Similar to the Universal Studios store in Orlando airport, which use to have 3D displays of Kong and Jaws (after it reopened in 1993/94).
Slightly off topic but I also loved the old 3D billboards dotted along i4, 192 and iDrive.

I was a cast member at a branch of the Disney Store in 1992 in the UK. I would often get the task of packing plush mountain at the end of the day, it was hard work making it pristine knowing it would all be pulled to pieces by guests the next day.

Disney have made the biggest mistakes in their existence, closing down The Disney Store. In the UK, which had the highest number of stores, outside of the USA, there is now only 1 store left. With less than 5 stores remaining throughout the whole of Europe!! I’m in the UK and was a former Cast Member in one of these original stores. I still have my cardigan, the turquoise one with the big M on the pocket and the dark blue one, which came out in 1997. I personally loved the original costume, with the grey trousers, pink shirt and white trainers. I did a couple of store openings too. One in this style and the other in what was then the new style, with the giant Mickey Face on the floor at the entrance. The theme of the original stores, was always a 1950’s college hangout, hence the colours and shapes of the fixtures and of course the Cast Member’s costumes, which were intentionally very preppy. The 1997 era stores, were themed to a movie studio. After that, Disney Stores, stopped having a theme to their design, because those original stores were too expensive to fit out. An original store, like this one, would have cost approximately £250,000 ($345,000).
Disney Stores became one of Disney’s the biggest marketing assets. Their name was illuminated across the doorway’s of many a shopping centre, but more so where the masses of people who’d be seen walking around with Disney Store carrier bags. The little yellow Goofy bag, the medium Donald bag, the large Mickey bag and for those with bigger purchases, there was the extra large Pluto bag. Each person was a walking advertisement for Disney. The company, under Iger and worse, Chapek really did kill the Disney Store. It’s 35 years of magic and park standards Guest Service being obliterated.

Great video.... I remember I had one of these style of Disney store when I was growing up.. and being from NOLA , I didn't get to WDW that often so going to the store was the next best thing... I used to also sometimes by my park tickets from the store...you are right, the tower of plush seemed so much bigger when you were younger... I used stay in the store for a while just to watch the cartoons playing on the big screen... (Great classic ones..too..)... Great times...I kinda of remember they had a small amount of theme park themed merchandise too... But I think that changed once Disney stopped run the stores themselves... Another company does it for them (licensed out)... New stores not the same..still fun to go to though...in this video, your demeanor and tone was very genuine... Which was great... thanks for sharing... Take care.... Have a great day.... Thanks...👍👍👍👍

Mixed emotions here, so glad to see there is or was a traditional TDS still around. I was on the opening team for the Arrowhead Towne Centre opening in Glndadale Az in October 1994. It was a place where we could be part of the show and bring our joy to everyone that came in and especially the kids. It had an impact on my family as well with my son even doing a CP at WDW in 2010.
The White Rabbit case was the watch case to showcase the Disney watches opposite the checkout would have been the Disneyana stuff like ceramics, globes and the framed ink cells. Several of the animations there are the same as what we had in our store along withe the plush mountain and video screen. The windows and checkered entry where the show starts are very similar or the same.
Back in1994 I even shave a 10 year old mustache to interview and work for Uncle Walt.
Disney lost its vision and purpose with the TDS and sold it off to only buy it back, but it became stores with little or no magic feelings. If anyone from Disney sees this, This video is of a store Walt and Roy would have been proud of, not what its become today. The company needs to rethink its Vision and Values and return to the Traditions of the Disney that Waly envisioned. Michael Eisner had that vision in the beginning when the stores were opening. The Vi$ion$ and Value$ changed and thus the stotes suffered.
Thanks Michah for sharing this video! Last I checked we still had one traditiona store left in Scottsdale.

This is my store, carpeting was newish, replaced probably about 5 years before closing. The displays on the two sides of the box office with the blue Mickey heads (that was tissue paper) used to be TVs that played the same video as the big screen. The Belle had a hidden Mickey on her dress and the door to backstage made the loudest noise when it opened/closed.

One of the stores in the early 2000's was not that far away when I was a little girl at one of the malls in the early 2000's, and it looked exactly like this witth the animatronic characters and everything, I used to love going there as a little girl back then and I was OBSESSED with Tinkerbell back then and I used to love the animated Tinkerbell up high on the present. (I STILL to this day have this hourglass Tinkerbell cup from there back when the first 2008 movie came out, although the Tinkerbell figurine sitting on the flower that moves with the confetti has evaporated water now from being so old and sitting for a long time. XD It was way better back then with their merchandise and everything, nowadays at the modern ones, it's mostly really clothes, Elsa, Frozen, and very little dolls, figurines and plushies, it's pretty empty and boring now alot like Build-A-Bear, Hallmark, etc. They just aren't the same anymore. Unfortunately, this one closed now and they turned it into some Mexican store. :/ I think there's only one really exists now that's close. I went to it before and it was really cool, but I'll ALWAYS prefer THIS version of the store, it was WAY better back then! ^^

We still have your traditional store in salinas, ca. In the Northridge Mall. So far so good. Hope we keep ours. Just was at DTD last week, and our little store has WAY more magic than World Of Disney at DTD! That store is so generic now. Reminds me of shopping at Mervyn's! And yes, I think the Disney family would not be happy to see where the company is going.

End of another golden era. Walt Disney era passed into 10 years of stagnation into Michael Eisner era. Both eras were of great creativity, great original content, great animation, which the heart of Disney. Wakr Disney company is desperate need of another visionary. Iger was nothing, but a corporate shill. No creativity, no vision, just $$$$. Where is Disney's next white knight?

Someone needs to come in to save it ASAP!! Disney trying to be all woke right now, catering to such a minority of the population that screams the loudest and throws fits is not an effective way of running your business and keeping ppl interested and loyal! Disney’s been making some dumb ass decisions lately trying to cater to the wine and it’s seriously hurting them!! We need someone to come in real quick and save them, stick t classic era Disney, which is what ppl want and we don’t need a woke Disney!! Ugh.
