Its sad that the gunner never got credit and only the commander. Its a hell of a job to load aim and fire. The whole crew were a well oiled bunch i think
Are you saying the loader and the gunner are the same person? Because those were different roles. The reason the commanders get the credit is because they make the tactical decisions. You won't get rewards in this world for simply doing your job. Gunners train hard on using their sight correctly and loaders train hard on loading. Using available information to choose the angle of attack, communication with your team to make sure you don't get flanked, etc is what will get you a medal.
Most tank commanders acknowledged they wore the Knight's Cross for their entire crew. But because he was the commander and made the life and death tactical decisions for his tank he deserved the decoration.
Please do a video on UK "Stop Lines" in England and Wales, would be interesting. Or, do another video on the Battle of Berlin, maybe the fighting in the Reichstag? Thanks and great channel and videos! I subbed when I watched the Tiger II Berlin video.
Wittmann exploited the British tea time to his advantage. Such tacticool, much wow. On a more serious note, I thought this kind of things (British tea time being exploited by opponents) is a meme but turns out not.
The Britisher does indeed have tea at teatime. Her Majesty’s armed forces, however, get a brew on every half hour, reduced to 20 minutes when actively engaging the enemy.
I'm glad you enabled comments on your content on this video. History is Fact regardless of your viewpoint and your Channel represents History accurately. Good Job!
Well it only takes one mistake or mis interpretation of a situation, and you are gone. The Red Baron did the same in ww1; he broke the only rule he had the day he died.
This video really highlights the contrast between the German and Allied Tanks.. Would Wittman have become such a great Tanker if he was in a Sherman ?.. I think not.
He would have because shermans were the better tanks. Plus who copied his tatics? The us is still using the same playbook it had in ww2 so not us and the British damn sure didn't.
That was the best depiction of the circumstances of the battle I have ever heard. There’s always talk about destroying the British column but never the circumstances before and after the fact.
Michael Kenny You’re spot on. This account is not only full of errors but ignores the build up, the reasons why the British column became to be in that situation and what happened during the rest of that battle (it didn’t end well for the Germans). I like many, believed of German invincibility when it came to tank warfare, because of all of the hype you get fed, but once you read into tank warfare you find out that Tigers and Panthers were often at the receiving end of one sided battles. I guess that’s not so glamorous to hear that though. Let’s not forget what happened to him in the end - a one sided tank battle in which he was killed.
@@michaelkenny8540 also Wittman destroyed only two SHERMANS the 7th Armorrd used Cromwells. One was a unarmed artillery observation sherman amd the other was a Firefly.
Another great Video Mark. I am truly enjoying your work. Keep'em coming sir. Fresh content helps this modeler stay inspired.( you can't buy that anywhere ya know, so thank you very much)
Thanks for the info. I always thought Wittmann ambushed the column first, knocking out the lead vehicles then motoring down the road and shooting it up, before linking up with the rest of his unit and assaulting the town, where his Tiger was knocked out. Guess I got it in the wrong order.
Given that Peiper was prosecuted for war crimes and convicted of some but I don't think that (Malmedy) was one of them. The executions happened away from his position and there was no evidence that he had ordered such action. The trial was a shambles with evidence both for and against Peiper and there was some suggestion (with a degree of truth) that the evidence against him had been obtained by torture. Yes, he was sentenced to death but ultimately it was commuted to 35 years imprisonment of which he served 10 years. Ironically he went to live in France where he was murdered by supposedly communist French former partisans. The murder was never solved.
Carius and Knispel are real Tank Aces, this guy has become famous mainly thanks to Nazi propaganda, because they needed a Tiger Ace also in the Waffen SS. Moreover, Knispel never received the right rewards for his service since, several times, he got in the way of SS officers mistreating POW's, and also he always stepped down when a kill was unconfirmed, so probably his score would be actually higher.
This was pretty interesting but the Brits had a few tales to tell when two Churchill tanks climbed a hill that the enemy thought was impossible and did the same thing to a column in Italy or North Africa can't remembered local. Nobody's ever thought that this was clever.
Wittmann lost his Tiger and was the first Tiger in Normandy knocked out. His exploits were made into German propaganda where they claimed he destroyed every tank there. His actions were actually quite foolish that happened to pay off when he came into contact with soft targets all parked lined up down a narrow street. His attack had little effect on the outcome of the overall battle for the area. The Brits were celebrating with the liberated French villagers and that lowered their sense of threat. They were basically behind enemy lines at the time, all of the commanders were later fired from their commands and re-assigned. Took the Allies another two months to secure the area. The Germans lost 6 out of 36 Tigers in Normandy and many Panzer IV's - which were both quite costly losses for them. The Allies had a traffic jam of equipment which pretty much lasted until the end of the war.
LOL, a tea break, isn't that what also screwed them in the Anglo Boer war at one time!!! Without the Americans they wouldn't have stand a chance against the Germans!!!
The Canadians killed the great Michael Whitman. He had great instincts and could sniff out an anti tank gun which he considered the greatest danger better than anyone. R.I.P
It could, but it depends where it hit, and at what impact angle as to whether it would actually do damage. Thats assuming it even had the right ammo loaded of course
It's one thing to read about these battles, and it's entirely another when someone such as yourself makes a documentary about this a very powerful a very informative short video thank you so much.
Subscribers may perhaps be interested in you putting together a list of both Axis and allied tank aces from WW2 I would definitely agree that Michael Wittman, Otto Carius and Kurt Knispel were almost certainly in contention for the number one spot, though when you think about it in terms of what the allied armies were up against surely some of these guys did incredibly well to even get the jump on say the Panther, King and or jadgtiger crews? Anyhow in the meantime I do like your factual, unbiased approach most informative.
Caught while stopped for tea. Like my dad, a WW2 vet, always said , " If we could've just got the British to fight on the German side we could've wrapped the whole thing up a year sooner !"

My friend went to Normandy last year. You’d be stunned at all the flowers and toy tanks etc. that adorn his grave
"Quickly" and "reversed" are two words I did not expect to hear with the context of a ww2 British tank.

Bobby Woll was Wittmam real ace....once he was prometed to tank commander Wittman mojo was gone.

cromwells reversing quickly? what is this sorcery?
If you’re doing requests, Kurt Knipsel would round out any Tank ace series.
JvC.....Glad somebody remembers that great Ace besides you & I. Great call.
Too bad RUclips flags historical content
Jules Vallez scenes from the movie " Fury" as historical content?lol
What do you mean 'flags historic content'? Serious question

Can you please make a video on Michael Witteman death and the whole fight. Love the vids keep it up
What I don't understand is why Michael Witteman did what he did. How could an experienced tank cdr make the mistake of attacking into certain death?
There was one by other gentlemen , who visited the site, and interview the French gentlemen own that piece of land.
Well it only takes one mistake or mis interpretation of a situation, and you are gone. The Red Baron did the same in ww1; he broke the only rule he had the day he died.
But he didn't die then.
@John Cornell thanks to you and Nathan M for the response. I suppose so. It just seemed extremely foolish.
Surprised you never mentioned how that Cromwell that fired to no effect was firing point-blank into the Tiger’s rear armour
When the British make tea, Wittmann makes frags...
I finished a mission of this story in Company of heroes 1 campaign.. and I thought it was a bunch of nonsense but now .. holy shit
The Tiger was such a badass tank.

Indeed. It is always described as if it happens just outside the village, not inside it.

He was a legend and in my opinion was a German hero....
Joseph Hanley wasn't he an SS murderer? Am I mistaken or wasn't he involved in executing pows? For no reason
CG Account pretty sure that was Joachim Peiper
At malmedy

Schwere ss pz abt 101, its elite bataillon.....
One can imagine how upset the British high command were when they found out about this! One tank took out 25!
Great video, though why do you disable the comment sections usually?
Most likely trolls
I think its RUclips disabling them because the videos aren't 'Advertiser Friendly' or something.
it requires unique skill to survive if you are always pitted against numerical superior forces
Excellent content Mark, as always.

This guy was a beast. Shame he was killed. Obviously because he is German, Hollywood will never make a movie.
Single ambush XD
Please do a video on the defence of the Reichstag

in the game Combat mission beyond overlord, you can play that viller bocage as a mission
Ace of Aces ? in my humble oppinion that Title goes to Otto Carius
Especially considering he was a conservative who didn't share the Nazi ideology and only fought out of duty to his country and for his comrades.
Can you please make a video about Heinz Harmel? Thank you!
Cromwell...? Reversed QUICKLY?????
1:23 of course they stopped for tea.
Kurt knipsel and Bobby WOLL THEY GOT IT DONE
this should have been fury, the might of germany
The British hadthe high Ground? Yet Wittmann wrecked em'.
LOL, a tea break, isn't that what also screwed them in the Anglo Boer war at one time!!!
Without the Americans they wouldn't have stand a chance against the Germans!!!
Cromwells do not reverse quickly...most British tanks had horrible reverse speed, but I'm sure they reverse as fast as they could.
What version of Erika is played in the background?
The Canadians killed the great Michael Whitman. He had great instincts and could sniff out an anti tank gun which he considered the greatest danger better than anyone. R.I.P
This is true but ultimately he got what he deserved as part of the Nazi War Machine .
This guy fried so many Allied soldiers. What happened to him eventually? Retired to old age with his medals?!

you have some of the best WW2 content on YT.
Thanks for saying so
I like your videos, short and to the point 👍 Just wondering Where you get the scale models you use for some of your thumbnails?
Many thanks - the models are not mine unfortunately, but they are magnificent.
1:57 If he took a hit from a Firefly then why was his Tiger not destroyed? I thought the 17 pounder was the one gun that could penetrate its armor.
It could, but it depends where it hit, and at what impact angle as to whether it would actually do damage. Thats assuming it even had the right ammo loaded of course
When German bias works.

Erikaaaaaaaaa
great music in the background lol
those teas always brings disasters to Brits
If he had lived and manage to be one of the defenders of the reichstag everyone in the world will remember this guy as hero of the heroes
British Stop to make Tea and it bites them in the rear.
Suggestion: please provided sources when you make videos (I think every documentary video should).
Wittmann eventually got schwacked by a stock-regular Sherman crewed by Canucks peeking from behind a tall garden wall. Seems an ignoble end.
Thats why you dont stop for tea in the fucken open. You take cover first, then you make tea
Who eventually nailed Witteman, was it the Brits or Canadians?
Canadians I think.
