What a awesome setup, good job ! everytime i think i know all about the subject of your video, but that's count without the perfect tips of Neil & Marc, thank you guys !
I'm glad Neil calibrated his arm torque settings. I was worried he wasn't going to do the screws up tight enough. Can we get a tutorial on how to calibrate our arm torque settings?
Wow, that's kind of mind blowing. Back brake on the left huh? I usually apply both but I'm harder on the back (right side US) especially since I'm right handed, it feels natural. I never knew.
And if you want to get more precise on the lever angle, just download a spirit level app/angle finder app on your phone.. Saves a lot of time eye balling the brake levers
Nice one Neil, I was wondering if you guys know of any tricks to get the perfect alignment of my stem? There has got to be a better way than holding the front wheel between the legs and eye balling the stem direction.
I tried adjusting my levers recently and tried practicing using only 1 finger to engage the brakes, as suggested. But to do that with my hand in a neutral position, my shifters would have to be just out of reach. I tried switching the brake levers & shifters but the construction of each makes it impossible. Any thoughts on how to tackle this?
I've lived in the UK my whole life (almost) I got 28 and moved to the US to be the girl I met online (it worked out perfectly and now we're married) I bought a MTB here in the US and found out the brakes are on opposite sides to what I'm used to 😆 it feels so strange pulling my right brake for my rear
Make sure you put your front brake control onto your left brake lever so you can change down to first gear when you're stopping from light speed most applicable in Town.
(I don't see my comment posted, so I am reposting, sorry if am just not seeing it) Can you guys do a video on how to choose the right headset model/style/features for any particular bike? ******Please address if there is some way to run a tapered fork in a straight 1 1/8" head tube. Apparently Cane Creek makes a system but not sure exactly what to order. I figured I will have to have LBS press in the cups but I want to make sure I order the right HS for my bike and needs.******
I am asking because I have a 2012 KHS Alite 1000, I can't get the forks tight, there is always a good amount of play in there plus my fork blew out when I forgot to turn off the lock out (I am a big guy at 265lbs... all muscle of course ha ha). I am looking at buying a better fork but everything is tapered now. Cain Creek supposedly has a HS to run a tapered fork on a straight 1 1/8" head tube assuming I buy the correct headset lol. I figure the less money I spend on my bike or even a new one the more I can invest into my 9 year old son's mob/mx equipment. Thanks as always!
i have a issue with the brake lever, it is hard to push in and i have a metal chrome brakelever not like in the video (black). do you know how to fix that?
Can you guys also please make a video how to straighten breaklevers back propperly after a crash. Min bent away of the bars . They didnt turn around the bar but litterly bendet please help
+Dag Lofthus makes going from my mtb to motorbike simples, dread to think you needed to emergency brake on motorbike and get mixed up and grab the clutch!
How do you make sure both brake levers are equally stiff ? One of my levers is softer than the other and it's pissing me off. The brake pads are fine. Do I need to bleed the brakes to make sure there's enough pressure in the system to make it firmer ? Please help
Toh Han Shen when I ran then there was a small hex screw between the lever and the clamp which when screwed all the way in, brought the lever closer to the bar and when screwed out the opposite. Have a look, yours may be similar
I found a much better way to set up the levers and shifters, I placed the brakes levers inside and shifters outside ,my hands rest more and more freedom of movement.
Great video! I'm curious if you know why Americans have the rear brake on the right and Europeans (or just the UK?) have the front brake on the right? Is this mountain bikes only or road too? Motorcycles have the front brake on the right, so maybe I should adopt the front on the right to avoid confusion when switching between gas powered and pedal powered. But that might cause confusion while riding my bicycle. :)
+Iceman240Z I think we do this so we can watch visiting Euros crash :D I've also contemplated switching them as I occasionally develop the tragic belief that my front brake is a clutch, but I also don't want to die the next time I rent a DH bike at the park.... Damned if you do...
I'm afraid it's UK mostly? In Sweden and Germany people have their rear break on the right und front left. I'm pretty certain that it's the same with Denmark, France, Netherland and Poland at least... or is it?! I'm confused now. I grew up this way in Europe and actually didn't know it's done differently somewhere else... To me it's like driving on the right side of the road in most parts of the world and having to go left in the UK ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ You have to love the UK for being so original sometimes. :D
It has been said thats its to do with when you're cycling on the road and signal to turn across the traffic, if that is correct or not, Im not sure. So for us in the uk (Drive on the left) I signal right, my left hand is on the back brake so should I need to brake It wouldn't send me over the bars. Again, unsire if this is correct or just a theory..
Calibrated hands! I'm cracking up here! CRACKING up..! Like a carbon bar...! with an overtightened stem or brakes like. possibly shifters. Like from not using a torque wrench but using calibrated hands instead. Cracking up... Carbon... i dont know.
I just got my New Giant Anthem 27.5 bike...But I want to have the rear brakes on my left hand...and the front brake on the right.///right now the original set up is ..Right hand /rear brake...left hand//front brakes............I have and always prefer to use it rear brake/left hand...front brake/right hand.. i don't want to mess with it just because i don't know how....
hey GMBN. My brakes are really hard to pull. Is this normal, its very difficult to slam the brakes, I don't think that is normal! I tried switching out the cables and that didn't do anything! help please! Thanks!
+Bentley Baker Hi Bentley, it sounds like you might have a little too much fluid in the system. If not there may well be something broken in the internals. Thanks.
+Bentley Baker by tire brakes i am going to assume v-brake (rim brakes), first off, try using a degreasing solution on the rim, but in my experience the rubber on the calipers is probably old and hardened, try changing them with new ones...
I don't match my back and front levers. I tend to sit with the back brake at a steeper angle than the front. And the front left it's always closer to the bar that the back.
The xt m8000 's look like the bisniss! am I the only one who kind of hide from the neighbour a littlebit when setting up / feng shui'n my cockpit!? haha
+kel5944 Funny, if I ride with my hands in the middle of the grips I hit trees with the ends of the bars all the time. Brain know where hand is, brain not know where 1cm past hand is. Not at all.
pls anyone.. my brake lever wont come back as fast it should be.. and it feels heavy to brake, and not responsive.. nothing wong with the pads and the discbrake thou.. is it the cable??
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
I gotta say, the new Shimano stuff looks lovely.
Perfect timing been needing to do this
Who thumbs down these videos!?
Thanks for another great How To!!
Yeah I don't know why someone wouldn't like this... Maybe they disagree with something he said?
Connor Stiles yeah I always see people thumbs down these videos. I've watched a lot of them, and there's always a few. I don't get it.
I've seen a couple of haters on here, so it must be them.
1:10 you mean middle finger?
I learned more about adjusting Hydraulic Disk Brakes in the last 5:43 than I learned in the last 20 years of riding. Thanks.
"I calibrated my hands yesterday"
Haha Neil you're quite the clown
What a awesome setup, good job ! everytime i think i know all about the subject of your video, but that's count without the perfect tips of Neil & Marc, thank you guys !
+2P 2R Glad we can help! :)
I'm glad Neil calibrated his arm torque settings. I was worried he wasn't going to do the screws up tight enough. Can we get a tutorial on how to calibrate our arm torque settings?
yet another shiny new bike ;)
+marcus allison With so many bikes Neil should have a hard time picking one to go out for a ride
neil docent actually ever ride bikes- he just set them up perfectly, and then goes and get another
+marcus allison ha! There is some truth in that...
Finally a video, which explain things so a moron like myself can finally set up these brakes! Thanks!
Dude your how to's are best of RUclips ! Thank you for such amazing tutorials ! Great great channel and keep the work up! Cheers
good video guys big help changing mine now
When I calibrated my hand it broke my knuckle, do Park make a replacement knuckle for me??
So the next how to is on calibrating your hands ?
Looking forward to putting this video to good use on my new Canyon Spectral CF 9.0 SL when Canyon actually bother to send it out!
Another bike! How many bikes do you have neil.
Thank you GMBN, great vid!
Neil, you've changed more bikes in the last week that I have underwear! :D
All i need now is a dropper post to complete my dream bike! 😍😂👌
Good stuff
cool tech video. As a dutchie i also like to have my right brake on the right lever. Tried the english way but it's too confusing for me lol...
Thanks helped me a lot
4:25 are those the CB wheels in the background? how do you like them and wtf are they not on a bike?
great video, i have XT too. its helped a lot
Gr8 tips, Thanks
Can you do a series where you blog your personal riding😎
That Suntoo Core on Neil's arm.
Could you do a video showing all the bikes you ride
damn, that sensor carbon pro is one sexy bike !
Nice one Neil, I was wondering if you guys know of any tricks to get the perfect alignment of my stem? There has got to be a better way than holding the front wheel between the legs and eye balling the stem direction.
3:06 where can I get that extension tool?
I tried adjusting my levers recently and tried practicing using only 1 finger to engage the brakes, as suggested. But to do that with my hand in a neutral position, my shifters would have to be just out of reach. I tried switching the brake levers & shifters but the construction of each makes it impossible. +Gerald Tan It's a good question, depending on your manufacturer you might be able to change parts in and out to make it more suited!
Good idea Neill! im going to get my hands calibrated too! ;-)
Is there a video on how to tighten loose brakes if not can you please make a video on it, cheers :)
0:41 so why do you like having your hands slightly outside the grip?
Because he’s a downhill biker and when your arms more spread apart you have more control over the speed of your bike
I actually set my brake levers up differently. I like my front brake to take longer and have better modulation so I don't kill myself going otb
Mike good idea
I've lived in the UK my whole life (almost) I got 28 and moved to the US to be the girl I met online (it worked out perfectly and now we're married) I bought a MTB here in the US and found out the brakes are on opposite sides to what I'm used to 😆 it feels so strange pulling my right brake for my rear
1:10 Flip the bird adjustment for aggressive riders
Is putting tape under the clamp a good idea? I wonder if ti can prevent scratches on the bars and still let the lever spin when crashing
No, not really as it will never really clamp and grip the bar it will always be a risk of spinning on the tape if the tape moves.
+Axecution Sounds like a plan.
Jason Cross are you sure it will move that easily? Electrical tape sticks like **** doesnt it?
How do you like those Silca hex keys?
+Benjamen Jones Hi Benjamen, they are extremely nice, a very precise fit and feel.
Hey, is there a way to adjust lower to mid end hydrolic disc brake lever like the ones on the Marin Hawk Hill
There's an App that you could use for the angle, And it's free too.
Nice work!
I think they used that app on an other video
It was the geometry video
omg bro tnx ,,you are ACE
I didn’t realize the brake levers were opposite in the UK. That would mess with my head for a while hahah.
Are you guys ridng gt bikes now
My right lever controls the front brake, and my left controls the back brake. That's how my SLX's shipped. I like it better. :)
Make sure you put your front brake control onto your left brake lever so you can change down to first gear when you're stopping from light speed most applicable in Town.
(I don't see my comment posted, so I am reposting, sorry if am just not seeing it)

Can you do a video on selecting and installing shorter levers?
I'm fourteen and looking into downhill and I'm eyeing a kona stinky that's a few years old any opinions? I've been racing cyclocross for 3 years
+Crsxbike I have had a Giant Reign SX for a year really fun bike to ride and very durable
Is there a kickstand on this bike?
How to have less free stoke on brakes without the free stroke adjuster ?
Hey bud what watch is that, is it pretty tough?
i have a issue with the brake lever, it is hard to push in and i have a metal chrome brakelever not like in the video (black). do you know how to fix that?
Can you guys also please make a video how to straighten breaklevers back propperly after a crash.
Min bent away of the bars .
They didnt turn around the bar but litterly bendet please help
can you buy smaller levers, his seem a lot shorter than mine
so with the right hand you are breaking in the front but shifting the back gears? :o
Shimano ZEE have free stroke adjustments?
yes they have, you just need to take off the original screw and put a longer one
How do you buy a pair of crank brothers mallet e pedals in the uk?
Why do you have the frontbrake on the right hand? Is that something everyone do in GB?
Yes. You got a problem with that.
British people Often run their front brake at the right of the handlebar.
+Dag Lofthus makes going from my mtb to motorbike simples, dread to think you needed to emergency brake on motorbike and get mixed up and grab the clutch!
+Henry Oxburgh No, just curious.
+Dag Lofthus O
Ok then
i have a sweaky back brake leaver can u show us how to fix that
how many carbon bars did you break to calibrate your hand?
Can you guys do a video on how to calibrate one's hands?
What is that awesome bike
It's a GT Sensor
I just got a new bmx bike and when I use the brake lever it makes a clicking noise do you know anyway to fix this problem

My brake lever is too hard to pull can you guys help or suggest?
I am having Cable Mechanical Disc brake with 160mm rotor
Hey, im using mechanical brakes. How do I adjust the reach of the brake levers?
Toh Han Shen when I ran then there was a small hex screw between the lever and the clamp which when screwed all the way in, brought the lever closer to the bar and when screwed out the opposite. Have a look, yours may be similar
if i adjust my brakes so i use only one finger i have trouble reached the shifter
I think if my lever easily reaches my other fingers on the bar it's not biting nearly early enough.
how can i watch the GMBN outakes???
+Jamie Dene Hi Jamie, there will be a GMBN bloopers reel coming shortly, keep your eyes peeled!
Thanks;-)
I found a much better way to set up the levers and shifters, I placed the brakes levers inside and shifters outside ,my hands rest more and more freedom of movement.

how do i adjust my xtr m9000 free stroke?
I don't match my back and front levers. I tend to sit with the back brake at a steeper angle than the front. And the front left it's always closer to the bar that the back.
Not only the americans would say that, Neil. Also the rest of the europeans (I am from Romania) have their front brake on the left side.
new bike? xD
100%
+pau peris marti GT bikes new sponsor
+pau peris marti Yes, in case you haven't noticed yet, this show is highly sponsored.
U machine how do u calibrate your hands
I have my front brake a little down from ️LEVEL. Back is much more down... Don't know why... Maybe I'll experiment
i have that same world map dawg

I've hit the ends of my bars on trees so often that I wouldn't have hands left if I held the grips like you do.
+kel5944 Same here I'm always riding through the red wood trees
+CalifroniaCrusin' I'm always hitting my hands on trees cause I ride like him, I still keep doing it tho 😂
+kel5944 Funny, if I ride with my hands in the middle of the grips I hit trees with the ends of the bars all the time. Brain know where hand is, brain not know where 1cm past hand is. Not at all.

Hello
+Edgardo Vega Hello from the other side :P
Oh Don! Use a screwdriver to adjust the freestroke instead of using an adapter.
England is the only place that runs the levers that way round
The correct way round.
+BACON IZ GUD4ME you can see it that way
Also come standard RH/front here in Australia.
+TheMrDavidCurran you know what, I'm never right
On a dirt bike the front is on the right so might make some sense, but I like the American way. On my dirt bike I know to switch. (Clutch is left)
