general context is that the choir was on a field trip to a theme park. they rode the cyclone, a rollercoaster that failed during the loop-d-loop. all of them died.
the fortune teller machine gains sentience, it had read their terrible fate but was set to a "family friendly" mode so was unable to warn them. the teller uses their abilities to host the choir's spirits, and then they have to pick one person to live once again. The teller is slowly being murdered by a rat chewing their power cord, so the choir must choose someone before its too late.
Its themes are carpe diem and sacrifice for the greater good.

The most impressive part of, "Space age Bachelor Man" is that he was bigger heels than in, "Noels Lament."
Btw Talia is in fact about his girlfriend (the kinda sad thing is that he doesn’t actually know Talia. She’s just a girl who kept commenting on his rap videos on RUclips who he eventually started online dating. Right after the song, Karnak offers to tell him who Talia is and how she’s doing, but Noel stops him because everyone else knows that it’s unlikely that she’s actually who she says she is and no one wants to break his heart)
Also most of the weird comments Ocean makes about “feeding through a tube” and “never gonna read” are targeted at the only disabled character (who annoyingly is suddenly cured of all disability as soon as he reaches the afterlife- but has a degenerative disease)
I thought Karnak's offer was to show him his future with Talia. I don't remember Talia's identity being a point in all that. Karnak offered to show Mischa their future and Noel stopped him because whatever it is might not live up to his hopes and dreams, and with that I thought he meant the probability of them actually meeting irl and getting married and growing old together, not whether or not Talia is who she says she is

Brief explanation here:
While Ricky (the one who sang Space Age Bachelor Man) was alive, he had an unspecified disease that gradually took away his ability to walk and speak. Because everyone else infantilized him (which is why in the first song they say "his brains are mush", "he'll never learn to read", and throughout the musical is reduced down to being "sweet and innocent" by the other characters. SABM is meant to show that he isn't any of the things they thought of him, which is also why its so sexual.
Talia was Mischa's fiance, they're both Ukrainian, though its 'left to interpretation' whether Talia was real or not. Neither of them had seen each other in person, they were planning to, but Mischa died before he could.
Ocean kind of sucks at the beginning of the musical but she gets better I swear 🙏
So Ricky is described as the most imaginative boy in Uranium, so Space Age Bachelor Man is essentially just a daydream he had while people were ignoring him due to treating him as brainless because of his degenerative disease.
The joke is also that his family had like 14 cats, hence the spotlight on cats in his imaginations

Basically, their songs are representing each character and their main motivation! This is important, because at the end ONE will be chosen to get another shot at life.
Ocean (mean girl) - Easy, superiority complex. Her song is the first and thus kind of an introduction to the concept, and she goes through the most character growth.
Misha (Ukraine boyy) - The rap/hip-hop sections are him building up walls and protecting himself from hurt. In "Talia" he chooses to be vulnerable, and sing about his regret and sadness over losing his future.
Noel - As the only gay boy in town, he didn't have it easy. He seems depressed at many points, and this prostitute he sings about is how he wants to be: strong despite all the hate he's receiving, "choosing to burn out, rather than fade away". Embracing his feminine side.
Ricky (Space Age Bachelor Man) - Ricky had a degenerative disease in life that made it so he could only walk with a crutches, and was mute, isolating him from the people around him. His song is about the fantasy he used as escapism, and how he was happy in life despite everything because of it. Also some weird notes of being needed, and most importantly not literally built WRONG with the seed talk.
Constance (soccer mom): Her song is full sadness over losing her life, but also anger. She truly believed what ocean described earlier (small town nice girl, never leaves, has 4 kids) was her only future, and is devastated she only realized how wrong she was after she died.
Jane Doe: The only one who actually sings about something she needs and still longs for instead of only mourning what she lost - since she can't remember her life. No one in the musical, herself included, knows who she is. Or what she looks like, for that matter, because she literally lost her head. Her motivation isn't about coming back to life, but to remember the one she had.
You were mentioning it at the beginning of what the world needs, and the girl who sings what the world needs (Ocean) does indeed gatekeep libraries. Constance has her go on a monologue which after being fast-forwarded, ends with “and that’s why not everybody should own a library card!”
9:15 actually the entier point of the music battle thing(?) Was so Karnak(the future telling machine) wanted them to have a chance to express who they wished they were, ex: nole wanted to have a romantic (as in the romantic art movement) life, Misha wanted to be rich & marry Talia, ect.
So no, she's not that arrogant but she wished she was because that would make it easier for her to convince herself she's a good person.
Are you going solely off of the intro song? Karnak didn't really give them a set of rules to go by, just that they'd be competing and (after Ocean sings) that they'd also be the judges. Sure Noel, Mischa, and Ricky sung about things they dreamt about but it was also clear that Constance, Ocean, and Misha also just sung about how they actually viewed their lives. They let us know when something is what happened in their life vs if its something they had wanted. Jane doesn't even go over having dreams since she doesn't even know who she is and thus her song only focuses on grieving about not being able to grieve properly. The musical covers many multiple intersecting topics, especially since they died young and have different backgrounds. I don't think it has just one set theme in that way.
I also think Ocean genuinely believes she's a good person during that song

@@pokiandi5228 No, Karnak already knew who they'd choose because he can see the future. It was very pointedly for the chance to express what they dreamt they were rather than who they were perceived to be, as he himself says in the intro.
@@FunnysDemon yeah, to express to the rest of the choir, Karnak might have known but they didn't, the future always happens for a reason, it was always gonna be Ocean choosing, so therefore she needed a reason to not choose herself, hence the choir needing to prove themselves

Okay so explanations if you want them:
"Talia" is genuinly a love song, it happens right after Misha's rap song.
Before both songs he has a monologue and in that monologue we get to know that his main two emotions are passion and rage. He distracts himself from his rage by rapping which is shown in his first song and that little section in Talia which looks silly but is actually him trying not to get angry about being dead while his girlfriend is alive.
Also since Misha and Talia are meant to be ukrainian, so misha actually repeats "i love you" in ukrainian for most of the song
"What the world needs" is infact meant to give you the ick. It's meant to show you how much of an asshole (and lowkey kind of supremacist) Ocean is. The cheery nature of the melody and the constrasting awful lyriks are a direct reflection of her, but don't worry she get's less egotistical (a front for her insecurities and her parents abandoning her) as the show goes on.
About the "how longs he got if we feed him through a tube" the kid she's singing that about is disabled, sooo that comment was straight up abelism

He is not literally a prostitute, he was obsessed with old french movies and basically made a self-insert oc, monique
So this song combines his interest in old french movies, his desire for a more adventurous life and the wish to have a man love him which is easier as monique (he's gay in a small town)
The point of the song kind of is that Noel doesn't want to be remembered for what he was but for what he wanted to be and since they all have to vote for who get to go back to life at the end, something tragic might help his chances. Going back to life isn't what Noel wants, he wants a chance to be the person he never got to be in life, to be monique.

I don't remember Ricky's entire backstory, but the main thing is that he is mute and only really able to communicate with his parents and his cats. Through years and years of limited social interactions he had made up an entire world in his head, a world with him as the space age batchelour man saving alien cat-girls. He is also a horny teenage boy, let's not judge him for that.
Now that he is dead, he doesn't even want to go back to life since he isn't hurting in death anymore. He does, however, want to show off the world he's been living in all these years and have some fun now that he can do so.
They did infact say freaktastic seed and yes, Ricky has to safe the solarian race by (how do I say this) repopulating it with the help of the female aliens... it's his fantasy world so it'll be horny

Tbh I already loved her. I found Ride the Cyclone bc of her song and I really loved her character based on What the World Needs. I always like those type of female characters who are more narcissistic and arrogant I guess. She and Noel are my favourite characters. My favourite songs are Space Age Bachelor Man purely because of how unusual and confusing it is out of context. I also loved Ballad of Jane Doe especially when she starts floating.

Story: basically after they died a robot fortune-telling machine feels bad about not warning them of their death so he's letting them pick one person to bring back to life. In what the world needs Ocean is singing about why she should be brought back to life over everyone else, the reason she's being so rude is because after the song is done Karnak explains that the other dead people get to vote on who to bring back to life and it's their opinion that matters not his.
In space-age bachelor man Ricky is singing about a fantasy that he had while he was alive. He was nonverbal and needed mobility aid so people ignored him and the only people that he could talk to were his parents in their own made up sign language they taught him instead of the more universal ASL. He would make up stories in his head and in the song he's explaining the main story he had.
Noel is singing about a scenario where his life was more tragic and interesting instead of the reality of him being the only gay kid in a town working in food service.
Mischa is singing about his online girlfriend Talia who he never got to meet in person but was one of the only people in his life that cared for him after his mother died.
The reaction to Thalia was beautiful and the reaction to Space Age Bachelor Man is SO real. I Cringed the whole time but his voice is so amazing! I was cackling the whole time you reacted🤣 also the end where Ricky concedes and talks and it's actually wholesome is awesome
How Space Age Bachelor Man was introduced to me was "Hey Sam, wanna sing the lead on this and we'll be the cats" from my friends and I was like "what" and then listened and died a little

Song explanations:
Talia: song within 2 minutes of the rap song. Mischa, the singer, has an online fiancé named Talia. He was saving up to move back to Ukraine so they could get married. Mischa and the choir die before Mischa can move back. The song is about Mischa being sad about not being able to see his fiancé until she dies. The weird part shows the anger he has for the same reason.
What the world needs: the song after either “uranium suite”, “waiting for the drop”, or “fall fair suite” (it depends what version you’re watching. The most famous version of the show is the one with fall fair suite). Ocean doesn’t know that the choir is going to vote who comes back instead of Karnak. She tries to convince Karnak to bring her back because she’s “better than everyone else.” After her song, it’s told that the choir will be voting.
Noel’s lament: Noel knows he isn’t going to get voted back so, he he chooses to live out his fantasy as Monique Gebau, a French 🪝er that lives a romanticized, traumatizing and tragic life.
Space age bachelor man: I don’t fucking know. I’ll try my best for this one. So, before death, Ricky, the singer, was disabled and couldn’t walk or talk. He had a big imagination and made up the planet of zolar and that he was this, in his words from a different version of the musical, “superhero sex god”

Hey Matt, if you planned on doing another one, I would recommend "The Uranium Suite". It wasn’t in the most popular upload of the musical, but it’s in the world premiere cast recording. There are a few animatics on RUclips if you wanted graphics, but it’s basically a different version of "Fall fair suite" used in different performances. :)

I was able to go to see a preformance of ride the cyclone last January and I went with my friends and my little sister cause she heard ballet of Jane doe and wanted to come. We sat front row and my little sister at the time was 10 and she was like 😧 during space age bachelor man and where Ricky takes a deep breath in the song he looked at my little sister looked up and you could tell he was contemplating his decision big time omg it was so funny and we got to meet the cast after at the cast door and got photos and signatures and they were talking about how they saw our reactions and us BAWLING at the end it definitely changed by brain chemistry for sure

about dancing in heels, they actually make certain forms of dance easier bc your steps are naturally more springy and switching from heel to toe takes less effort, they make rocking style steps a lot simpler. Balance is def a big issue but overall a lot of ballroom and fosse dancers which were both styles big in the era Noel is imagining would choose heeled shoes over flat every time bc its just easier!

I love Talia so much it’s my favorite song from the musical. It’s so cute and Misha is probably my favorite character. Also this song was directly after the rap song you listened to of him. Which is why his shirt was open at the beginning. The rap represents his rage, which is why at the end it got upbeat cause he was mad he never got to meet his internet girlfriend. The slower sound of Talia represents his love and passion. It’s so cute.
