I've still never seen the precipitating incident ... only the reaction by Coach Knight. I've seen these highlights a million times and not once have seen the events that led up to the outburst. There were two absolute HORRIBLE calls against Indiana which led up to this. The last one was near the baseline, the Purdue player fouled and they called it on the Indiana player, that's what triggered Knight.
One of my middle school teachers did a very similar thing to this, but even worse. He threw a chair at a student's head, then threatened to gun down all our families if we ever told anyone. It's only now, 20+ years later, that I'm finally coming out about it. That's how terrified I was of him.

People forget Bobby Knight had the highest 4 year retention rate in the NCAA for years. More of his kids graduated with degrees from IU than anywhere in the country. He was loyal to his players and the young men he built remember that even today.

I was at the game (graduated '85). It was against arch-rival PU. Tough season. They should show the play that got him irate - Marty Simmons had the ball and a PU guy fell on top of him. Ref called the foul on Marty. The next morning we were reading the paper and noticed they were making a big deal out of the "chair throwing incident". The chair throwing didn't seem like that big of a deal - it was the fact that he got kicked out of the game that was a big deal! It took 3 technicals to get kicked out and the chair was only 1 of the 3 (the 2nd, mind you). IU lost the game and later lost in the NIT Championship. There were high hopes for the '85 team after knocking out Michael Jordan (in his final college game) and getting to the Elite 8 the previous year. The team won the NCAA Championship 2 years later. PU's Coach Keady is the only coach to have a winning record against Bobby (assuming more than a few games played). They became (and are) good friends since retirement.
I was there too, IU 1985. I worked for IUPD while in college and was up in the balcony on the IU side. I have never heard anyplace this loud! IU fans were about to get into fights with the few Purdue fans at the game.
