@reinmansmith Best fun I ever had was with an old Mk1 Mini which I bought for £50, did nothing to the 1000cc engine (had no money!) apart from running a straight through exhaust, stuck a bucket seat in and lowered the suspension. Great fun every day.......and all on a tiny budget!

What a great video, thanks for posting!! I'm sure that Nick's father Glyn would be looking down and smiling to see his son, keeping up the Swiftune tradition and showing you what his beloved Mini could do!
Back in the sixties and early seventies, I worked for a small family motor engineering company across the river in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and Glyn was a regular customer, bringing in his mini blocks, cranks, and heads for me to work on to his detailed instructions, always in a hurry, but we had a good friendly relationship, a great guy! Happy days, and keep up the good work Nick, and the Swift family!! 🚙😀

as an apprentice motor mechanic in the early 70s, my boss and I built an A40 Farina ( BMC ), we threw every goody you could throw at it, when it was finished we were both astounded at how quick it was, we were a Jaguar specialist workshop, but, the A40 was more fun than any Jag i'd driven, including the E Types ( E Types are very special cars though, very close to my heart ) the BMC motors, 850, 1000, and 1300 motors were brilliant to modify, and much more fun / simple than today's cars, you need to be an electronic genius to work on cars today.

1967. I was stationed in Topeka Kansas. There was an auto parts shop that had two " MINIs " used to deliver parts. You could hear them running around the city. Painted dark green with a shop logo. The tops were painted the black and white checkered flag. Fun to watch them run.

Similar memories of my Dad in the seventies, me in the back in a child seat whilst he hooned a Mini round Puddletown Forest handbrake turning like a madman. Remember he stuffed one up into a wall when his brakes failed, fast forward in to the late eighties and I had Minis too (obviously) and I suffered brake failure in one too and ended up in a wall (when the choice left was a river and right was a petrol pump)! We lost my Dad in 2016, still miss him every day.

Now THAT'S how you drive a Mini! As Nick said you drive it like you stole it! Loved the look on your face especially when you went past that other car. Also loved the way the wiper blade kept lifting into view as he ragged it through the really fast sections. Nick looked like he was out for a Sunday drive so I doubt he was really pushing it to the max and the tone in his voice as he commented on dealing with a Camaro is a definite sign of a man with a wicked sense of humour! I think the only thing that can beat that is to ride in the Paddy Hopkirk Mini.

Oh man I so miss racing my 67 1275 Morris Cooper S.
Nick's comment about the 65 period cars "you can drive it like you stole it" , or as we like to say in the US, the early Cooper S is a total Hooligan Machine.
I had the pleasure of meeting Nick when he came to the US and drove a customer's car in the 2014 Mini Can-Am at Mid Ohio race track in the US. Needless to say he drove like a champ and won on a track he had never been on before !
My son raced my Cooper S and didn't disgrace himself.
I spectated at the set of corners with a downhill S bend called "Madness" and watching the Coopers dive through it was both thrilling and terrifying .......
Great driving Nick, wish I was still out there with you.

However Richard was a great driver who had his own Motorsport business down at Chrischurch in Dorset. I raced against Nick when he was a sixteen year old prodigy in 850 Minicross. His father Glyn prepared him a beautiful car and he did a fair bit of winning. My team graduated to Rallycross with a Mini of various engine sizes until we settled on 1430, straight cut gearbox, limited slip diff, dry sump lubrication, cross flow head all built by Glyn of course. Ours was the last competitive Mini in Rallycross and on a tight circuit could beat Porsches and Cosworths, I remember an event in Belgium where we won the A Final, they hated us for that and we didn't return. We used to travel to Europe to do the occasional International Rallycross at circuits where we thought we could do well.
A great decade the 80's, remembered fondly.

On the straight, the Jag came into it’s own,and started pulling away, but then,a corner arrived, and the Jag driver had to hit the brakes well early, but the minis just kept the hammer down, and went through the corners on full throttle, and full opposite lock,in a cloud of tyre smoke. The Jaguar didn’t stand a chance, try as it might. Those mighty minis wiped the floor with it! As Nick said, the old minis, with the ten inch wheels just corner flat and stick to the track like glue!

Nick Swift. That name brought back some memories 😂🙈. There was a time I could build a mini from a box of bits. ( probably still could ). Happy days.

It was great to see a late classic mini in action and one of the best there is. The performance was fantastic quite unlike what it was in my day. Back in the early 1960s I raced, successfully, a gp5 850. Gave up in 1963 when the professionals tuners got involved. John Whitmore in his Broadspeed car was our nemesis.

If I ever win the lottery I want a Nick Swift Mini. Really exciting video.I was on the edge of my seat all the way round. It's fantastic to see a master at work. My only wish would have been when you switched to the full screen view of you and Nick it would have been nice to have had the track view as an inset. You always did it on the most interesting corners.

My first car in 1970 was a 1960 Austin 850 Mini. It absolutely LOVED that car! The fun part of driving (or riding in) a Mini is that, because you're so close to the road, you seem to go twice as fast as what the speedo shows!

  • @broadkamikaze

What a special video 👍 The entry speed into the chicane was amazing! Let the faster cars pass on the straights and hunt them down in the corners... Epic! 😂

I was a bloody menace in my Mk1, back in the 70s.
My son struggles to believe that cars back then, at least the cheap ones, came with literally zero accessories, not even a radio or windscreen washers in many cases. First job for young Mini owners back then was to fit the regulation tiny steering wheel, after which parking the little things required bodybuilder arm strength.
Owning a Mini was like a love affair, albeit one that was sorely tested if you had to replace the bypass hose, a job that would make the Pope swear.

That was fabulous! That'd have been some craic even as a passenger, I predicted the top speed he was doing to be about 90-100! but 125 in a proper racing Mini is mad! That was an excellent bit of film. Really enjoyed that.

Awesome - loved the Cheshire Cat smile! Growing up, a mate's dad used to rally in these. One of his cars had a Holden 186 motor in the rear seat area.
Great driving and lovely production. Really conveyed the joy of it. Sitting so low, as you do in these really enhances the experience! Cheers from Aust - Dave
