I loved this film as a kid - i saw it 2 or 3 times in the theater when it was released. Your analysis is excellent.
Last night I watched Here Comes Mr. Jordan for the first time. It's very entertaining. It's like a stripped-down version of Heaven Can Wait - the characters and plot points are almost exactly the same as in Heaven Can Wait, except there is no comedy element to the affair between Farnsworth's wife and Mr Abbott. And Farnsworth is named "Bruce" instead of "Leo".

I think about Warren in this movie saying: "I just can't seem to stop staring at you!" When the Mother in Golden Girls talks about her recurring In bed with Warren Beatty dreams! ;"). HELLO! :)

The script wasn't written by these people. It was transcribed (copied). I made up this story. CBC in Canada had a 1 hr afternoon old movie series. I believe it was on every Thursday at around 5pm. They showed movies like the Jungle Book and Here Comes Mr Jordan. This was back in the late 60s. I the story and still remembered it. In 1975 I was on my high school football team. I was also on the water polo team, thus "played a little polo" came into the story. The name Betty came from the character Betty in Archie comics. She was the kind of girl I preferred. I could never understand why Archie liked Veronica more than Betty. I quit the football team in high school. My coach was never giving me a chance to play. I thought it was unfair. I clocked in as the 4th or 5th fastest runner on the team. Back in high school when I was going anywhere, I was running. You may recall that also came up in Forest Gump, another story I told. If you don't believe me, ask them.
I am Eric Barritt, son of Claude Leon (Lee) Barritt, great grandson of Clarabell Hutchinson of Chicago IL, who was a niece to Queen Victoria, and half grand nephew to AL Capon.
These people didn't write these stories, they copied them, and there were many many more - all that come to your mind. It was music as well. Get them on camera and ask any of them. They are afraid because they know what this security is capable of doing.

Hey, some of it was incredibly miraculous, a lot of it was very original. They all know. My family was being scandalized by the security behind this. They were messing us up from the time that we were little kids not even in school yet.

Let me understand, many football players have to stop playing the rest of the season because of an injury on the field, but he goes through a major accident, and will go to the Super Bowl in time?

Brilliant Film. Genius. If We Can Get the World to Understand It’s Message, We’d Live in a Better Place. God Has a Plan. It’s His Creation, His Plan. All of It! Get Out of the Way. Stop 2ND Guessing It and Dwelling On What Happened and Didn’t Happen and Realize It’s All Bohemian Rhapsody. Nothing Really Matters. Once You Get to That Way of Thinking, You Will Then Find That Everything You Desired Came to You. Just Follow The Plan Joe! Probably My All Time Favorite Movie. Not Only a Game Changer but a Life Changer to Boot!

Has anyone else noticed that this movie was somewhat predicting the future events? The movie came out in 1978 and in the following NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers played the Los Angeles Rams in the Superbowl, just like in the film. Also, characters in the film were scheming to murder a wealthy man and at one point, thought he drowned. In 1979, Carol Rosenbloom, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams, DROWNED.

I've loved this film since I saw it first time back in LA in 2012 or 13 when I was a student at New York Film Academy. Our 'Meisner' teacher Anthony Montes showed it to us. Actually he only showed two films 'Artist' and 'Heaven Can Wait' during all four semesters of Meisner. I loved it so much that I later watched it with my brazilian screenwriting student roommate and then with my mom (russian translation cause she doesn't know english). The day before yesterday I out of the blue recalled it, don't know why, maybe I was feeling romantic and I decided to share it in my stories in instagram and FB so that my friends and followers would be interested in it. Every time I see it I feel sad but romantic. I like that they end up together in the end but what makes it great is that Betty would all her life think of Leo Farnsworth even if she marries Jarrett and sees Leo in him.

Hello- I understand your point about Betty and the tragic loss of Leo ( though it was Joe’s soul occupying Leo) as they were falling in love. However I do believe, as I’m such a big fan of this movie and seen it countless times since I was 10 years old, that there is great cause for joy especially as the final scene unfolds. Joe’s soul had transferred once again into the quarterback (Tom Jarrett) and confirmed the foreshadowing final conversation he had with Betty ( in Leo’s body) as a result of her epiphany in the final scene as Jarrett asks her to coffee. Betty and Joe ended up together because it was his soul that she fell in love with. The endearing way he spoke to her and what she saw in his eyes was the proof of this. Betty even said she couldn’t help seeing something else when she was trying hate Leo ( where Joe’s first transference began). The attraction between them transcended identity and thus carried on because it was a spiritual connection making the ending bittersweet.

Thanks for this cool discussion about this very enjoyable movie! Also, I'd like to mention how much I love another supporting 'character' in the film: the music, by Dave Grusin. I feel he came up with the ideal score. Again, thanks for honoring this hilarious and poignant film!

In the last scenes, they should have used a different actor instead of Beatty, because in these scenes his original identity was lost.

Have you considered that perhaps Joe's memory and identity loss are temporary until he dies in the proper time?
The fact that he seems to recognize Betty even if he can't remember why exactly seems to indicate such a thing. Not to mention he has some of his mannerisms still that even Betty recognizes.

If he has no memory or knowledge of who he was, they might as well have put the other guy back into his body.
